iptables are inactive, and ufw is inactive.. what else could be filtering ssh?
Ben64 2017-01-31 12:45:07
filtered = firewalled
k1l_ 2017-01-31 12:48:04
bytesaber: no, the security repos includes the updates from the security team.

bytesaber: how are you determining they are the "same resulting location"?
ivanskie 2017-01-31 12:54:35
ok Ben64: i've just done a bunch more digging around and testing. How do I check if my ubuntu box is filtering incoming? its not my pfsense that's blocking the port.
Ben64 2017-01-31 12:54:54
use nmap from inside the network
P3R4 2017-01-31 13:00:34

MarcoP: that package is only available on 12.04 and 14.04
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:23:19
oh
nacc 2017-01-31 13:23:27
MarcoP: if you are trying to do this on 16.04, you'd need to find a PPA or ask ossec to update to a more recent mysql base
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:23:32
well i guess ossec is no good on 16.10 then?
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:23:44
well I have the ossec ppa up
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:23:50

thats all I get

tripkin 2017-01-31 13:28:16
Have I done something wrong has the ablility to resize 'files' and 'gedit' windows been disabled in 16.04?
Ben64 2017-01-31 13:28:38
no
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:28:48
MarcoP: 16.10 has libmysqlclient20 in the repos. so your 3rd party program wants outdated software that ubunut doesnt ship anymore
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:29:11
if I add the program you think it will work?
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:29:12
I've opened up two ports and have sshd listen on both of these. i've ran nmap on other local machine and both of these ports show as open.
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:29:15
probably not?
tripkin 2017-01-31 13:29:20
Sorry, forgot the or in that question...
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:29:26
im suprised ossec is outdated like that
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:29:29
I've opened up two ports and have sshd listen on both of these. i've ran nmap on other local machine and both of these ports show as open.
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:29:38
from outside... nmap says filtered.
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:30:14
i don't understand. it doesnt matter what port i say, as long as it points to my ubuntu box.. its filtered. as soon as i change the nat redirect ip to another local machine with ssh.. it works.
nacc 2017-01-31 13:30:36
MarcoP: what PPA are you using?
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:30:39

_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:32:04
Hello, I've just discovered, that 'apt' doesn't keep packages in /var/cache/apt/archives/, it removes them right after installation?!
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:32:09
Is it true?
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:32:12
thanks kek
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:32:19
MarcoP: no. you need to think and not just copy and paste
nacc 2017-01-31 13:32:21
MarcoP: they have a yakkety version which you should use
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:32:32
or am I missing something?
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:32:44
k1l_, well I went to the section called ubuntu...it was a mistake .....
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:32:46
get over it
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:33:01
thanks naac
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:33:19
MarcoP: its not for me to get over it. its for you not making a mess out of your system. but its your system, good luck with it.
tripkin 2017-01-31 13:33:24
Ah, got it. It was the Ambience theme causing my problems.
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:33:41
_28_ria: did you run any clean commands?
MarcoP 2017-01-31 13:33:41
k1l_, well its all they had on the ubuntu section..so get a life loser
tatertots 2017-01-31 13:33:45
ivanskie: does it work if the system in question is dmz'd?
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:34:04
good question.
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:34:23
MarcoP: insulting me will not make it better for your system. installing packages for 12.04 because you only copy and paste is the issue. not me.
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:34:27
k1l_: No, and even immediately after installation, archives dir doesn't have any files in it.
tatertots 2017-01-31 13:35:14
ivanskie: if you don't know the answer to that question, your next step should be to find out.
CodeMouse92__ 2017-01-31 13:35:19
MarcoP: k1l_ is right. It isn't a matter of attacking you. Installing a 12.04 package in 16.10 is like filling a car tank with coal, to oversimplify the anaology
ivanskie 2017-01-31 13:36:05
yeah i'm about to try testing this
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:36:57
_28_ria: iirc apt runs the clean command after the install is completed. yes
CodeMouse92__ 2017-01-31 13:37:03
Each Ubuntu distro has technical differences that affect how software is built and runs. Installing a package for one distro on another distro can be at best pointless, at worse disasterous.
CodeMouse92__ 2017-01-31 13:37:15
*disasterous
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:37:40
I have cron script running every 12 mins, that caches any downloaded debs from archives to a centralized lan, then, I've started noticing, that log messages 0 packages copied always, even though, I've installed programs, that consisted of dosens of packages. I've looked in archives and and it was empty. Searched an entire HDD, it didn't have any *.deb s in it.
nacc 2017-01-31 13:37:46
tbh, i think MarcoP just made a mistake, it's ok
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:40:24
k1l_: I recently started to use apt, because, I liked, how it shows progress bar and colors, etc. So, I've finally decided to test to install some package with 'apt-get' and the package appeared in archives folder, so I've discovered, that apt removes them after install. Too bad. I will stop using apt, than.
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:41:03
_28_ria: i was just looking at the manpages, but i guess its a config setting.
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:41:14
k1l_: Too bad, I didn't know about it before, because, I've just now noticed about this behaviour, after downloading/installing Gigabytes of packages. So much traffic was wasted. I am pissed.
k1l_ 2017-01-31 13:43:34
_28_ria: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/zesty/en/man5/apt.conf.5.html i guess that is some setting there. if you are interested have a look
_28_ria 2017-01-31 13:44:19
k1l_: Yes, thanx. I will try to solve this. I don't like it as a default behaviour.
