Ben64, they have none, but i have been in contact with linuxium dev by mail. He told me to try the latest release, but i cant download it. And as i said, i *think* the problems im having now (not enough space on liveCD) is general and same troubleshooting should work for me.
Johnson1977 2017-01-30 09:46:44
can someone help me with understanding this networking

I have eth0 set to manual, yet it works as dhcp?
ioria 2017-01-30 09:47:34

budRich 2017-01-30 09:47:41
but i understand (i have called OOS, many many times when i worked at Lenovo technical support), if you don't want to touch this. In that case i have to contact a human with an external computer to make me a new liveCD, i can handle it.
Ben64 2017-01-30 09:47:43
budRich: sorry, but since you're not using ubuntu, this channel isn't for you, maybe try ##linux
bigLanky 2017-01-30 09:47:58
ok, do I need to purge nvidia* first?
budRich 2017-01-30 09:48:05
well, i am using ubuntu?
Ben64 2017-01-30 09:48:10
budRich: you're not
budRich 2017-01-30 09:48:37
ok, lets say i was, what would you sugest.
Ben64 2017-01-30 09:48:44
no, stop playing stupid games
ioria 2017-01-30 09:48:51
bigLanky, if you used the gui, just reinstall 375
Ben64 2017-01-30 09:49:01
budRich: go to ##linux where all linux is supported, this channel is for Ubuntu ONLY
bigLanky 2017-01-30 09:49:12
you mean select it from the additional drivers GUI?
ioria 2017-01-30 09:49:20
bigLanky, yes
budRich 2017-01-30 09:49:41
Ben64, ok, but i bet my hat, that they will say, goto #ubuntu
MarkB2 2017-01-30 09:50:28
ioria: Apologies... I'm back.
ioria 2017-01-30 09:50:51
MarkB2, you can run unity with that card ?

Right now it's running from the Intel 915 on the motherboard. It ..was.. running off the 6200 this weekend.

MarkB2, can you paste cat ~/.xession-errors
MarkB2 2017-01-30 09:53:04
one moment.
ioria 2017-01-30 09:53:11
MarkB2, can you paste cat ~/.xsession-errors
MarkB2 2017-01-30 09:53:43
ioria: Yah... I think so. let me copy/paste to ubuntu.
ioria 2017-01-30 09:54:24
MarkB2, you can use pastebinit, if you want
MarkB2 2017-01-30 09:56:06
ioria: no pastebinit on the system. where would it normally be?
ioria 2017-01-30 09:56:30
MarkB2, you need to install it ... apt get install pastebinit
ioria 2017-01-30 09:56:56
MarkB2, then cat ~/.xsession-errors | pastebinit
MarkB2 2017-01-30 09:57:51
ioria: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23895750/
ppf 2017-01-30 09:58:01
i'm contractually obliged to point out that pastebinit < ~/.xsession-errors is more better

MarkB2, pastebinit < dmesg | grep Kernel

MarkB2, where are you now ? in recovery ? in console ? in gui ?
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:07:12
When the displays started flashing and things running amuck, I typed CTRL ALT F6 (I think.. many of the alternate consoles weren't responding) and stopped lightdm. ran "startx" and was able to get a shell & then firefox.
Mrokii 2017-01-30 10:07:19
Hello. How are drives mounted when they're not in fstab? I have a 2nd harddrive that is available when I start the desktop but it doesn't have an fstab-entry, so I was wondering how this is done. If anybody could point me to a tutorial instead of explaining it all in here, that would be fine, too.

MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:09:04
ioria: No file.
ioria 2017-01-30 10:09:12
bigLanky, i was thinking nouveau would have worked ...
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:09:22
I have a .ICEauthority .
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:09:41
There is an .Xauthority?
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:09:43
no go on that :(
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:09:52
im going to fiddle with nvida settings a bit, try running as root see if that helps
ioria 2017-01-30 10:09:58
MarkB2, so you don't even get to the login screen ? right ?
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:10:38
ioria: That is correct. I do have a .Xauthority. I own it, it's in my group, and it's 147 bytes long.
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:11:15
Hm. .Xauthority has a .. ?MAGIC-COOKIE-1 in it.
ioria 2017-01-30 10:11:20
MarkB2, what happened (or what have you done) before the crash ?
ioria 2017-01-30 10:12:48
MarkB2, and don't use startx, exit from there , get to a console and run sudo service lightdm restart
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:12:59
When the crash occurred, there was some long message that flashed across the display. something about nouveau. the display cleared then I get purple screens flashing in my face. CTRL ALT F7 (I think) gave me a blank screen .. then I get a login: prompt.
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:13:18
Logged in, stopped lightdm, and that stopped the flashing screens (Yes, I went back and looked).
ioria 2017-01-30 10:13:33
MarkB2, uname -r ?
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:13:35
I've been ..afraid.. to reboot the box.
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:13:38
One moment
ppf 2017-01-30 10:13:51
MarkB2: what about the kernel line
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:13:58
Linux p630 4.4.0-59-generic #80-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 6 17:47:47 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
k1l 2017-01-30 10:14:06
dont use startx on a regular ubuntu desktop setup. look at the owner of the files in your users home.
Tahr-Poop 2017-01-30 10:14:37
Mrokii, i guess its using udev to automount
Guest12107 2017-01-30 10:14:43
Hi again. Was guest-xxxxx remembered my newpw after all. :)
ioria 2017-01-30 10:14:50
MarkB2, reboot and try to open a console
Mrokii 2017-01-30 10:15:01
Tahr-Poop: Okay, I'll look into that. Thanks.
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:15:19
ioria: Okay... .. here goes..
camthesaxman 2017-01-30 10:15:35
Is it save to make a link from /usr/include/asm to /usr/include/asm-generic? I'm compiling a program that asks for asm/errno.h, but I just have asm-generic/errno.h.
camthesaxman 2017-01-30 10:16:03
s/save/safe
dle 2017-01-30 10:16:12
Is it just me. or is the Ubuntu Software app a little rough?
ioria 2017-01-30 10:16:22
MarkB2, uname -r gave you all that output ?
ppf 2017-01-30 10:16:33
camthesaxman: install gcc-multilib
ppf 2017-01-30 10:17:09
although that may be overkill
anddam 2017-01-30 10:17:20
can I remap a couple keys from "English (international AltGr dead keys)" keyboard?
anddam 2017-01-30 10:17:26
or derive one from that
ppf 2017-01-30 10:17:29
camthesaxman: adding the symlink is perfectly safe
camthesaxman 2017-01-30 10:17:54
ppf, I already did. I need c11 and c++14 support, so I added https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-toolchain-r/+archive/ubuntu/test, and I installed gcc-6-multilib and g++-6-multilib and linux-libc-dev.
camthesaxman 2017-01-30 10:18:26
I'm also compiling with the -m32 switch because I need to produce 32-bit binaries.
ioria 2017-01-30 10:19:29
MarkB2, are you sure you are on a standard ubuntu ?
ppf 2017-01-30 10:22:24
ioria: seems to be gone
ioria 2017-01-30 10:22:32
i see
ericsysmin 2017-01-30 10:22:36
If I wanted to install SELinux on Ubuntu, how would I perform it without the apt install prompting me in another window. (which breaks my shell script)
ppf 2017-01-30 10:23:03
ericsysmin: ubuntu uses apparmor
ericsysmin 2017-01-30 10:23:36
yes, but I want to install selinux
ericsysmin 2017-01-30 10:23:43
so I remove apparmor
ppf 2017-01-30 10:24:20
what's the apt prompt you're worried about?
ericsysmin 2017-01-30 10:24:37
it's a screen just warning to restart
ericsysmin 2017-01-30 10:24:42
i think i will try with -q
ericsysmin 2017-01-30 10:24:57
nope
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:27:58
so I think I found the issue I was having
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:28:07
1) needed to run nvidia-settings as root
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:28:37
2) the xorg.conf file on my system was not writable by the program, what I did was move the original to a backup then saved a fresh copy through NVIDIA settings... all 3 monitors are working now :)
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:28:45
Thanks ppf and ioria for helping me debug!
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:33:08
Too...much...flashing...purple.
ppf 2017-01-30 10:34:34
MarkB2: cat /etc/*-release please
ppf 2017-01-30 10:35:25
and dmesg | grep Kernel | pastebinit
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:35:40
At the moment, everything is running except the Nvidia 6200. That seems .. gone. Now I have a single display running off the Intel 915 . Let me get the release up..
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:36:08
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:36:53
Okay.. pastebinit is in.
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:38:10
http://paste.ubuntu.com/23895936/ That's got the Kernel grep in it. Now for /etc/*release .
MarkB2 2017-01-30 10:39:13
http://paste.ubuntu.com/23895939/ and there is the release information
Bashing-om 2017-01-30 10:42:49
bigLanky: Wow .. Great ! After watching you struggle with this for a week .. What a relieve it is :)
bigLanky 2017-01-30 10:43:05
lol no kidding... it has been a long few days
