When I go to the boot menu it says mac osx with clover, but that's installed on a second harddrive, I've been using the primary drive with ubuntu for over a year with no real issues as long as I could access the terminal
disi 2017-01-26 14:46:45
can anyone explain this? https://gist.github.com/dmtucker/8d782dafbd1c80fd0f1b6d1cbe475b97
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 14:47:32
disi, yes. it's a series of non-contextual terminal output

doublejane 2017-01-26 14:48:29
jayjo: what happens if u unplug the mac drive?
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 14:48:56
disi, I suspect the #bash channel would know more
jayjo 2017-01-26 14:51:00
i haven't tried that yet. Right now if I boot with the default drive it goes straight to "GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.7" - what is the reason of booting here?
doublejane 2017-01-26 14:52:25
the bios determines the boot into GNU...
Mister 2017-01-26 14:56:42
Excuse me
Mister 2017-01-26 14:56:57
Just wondering if k1l was still here or if anyone else could give me some help.
Bashing-om 2017-01-26 15:00:52
Mister: I might be of some help; If I were aware of the issue . I am free :)
Mister 2017-01-26 15:05:46
Thank you very much Bashing. I recently bought and old Lenovo PC with Linux installed.
Mister 2017-01-26 15:05:56
And I wish to upgrade from 32 to 62 bit.
Mister 2017-01-26 15:06:09
and i believe I've downloaded the file, but now I need to do something with the usb stick
Mister 2017-01-26 15:06:29
And formatting or burning, or something of the like, and I've completely forgotten how to do that.
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:07:00
Mister, first you need to check if your old pc is even 64 bit compatible
Mister 2017-01-26 15:07:33
Yeah, we checked that.
doublejane 2017-01-26 15:07:48
Mister: wew that should be a very old PC, no need to have 64 bit unless the memory exceed 4GB
Mister 2017-01-26 15:08:37
It's 64 bit compatible. The gentleman I spoke to after I showed him the specs said he had no idea why the person before me installed 32 bit.
Mister 2017-01-26 15:08:49
Because I can't run steam off of my 32 bit apparently.
Mister 2017-01-26 15:09:42
But I've downloaded Ubuntu
Mister 2017-01-26 15:09:53
The new one, and I have a usb drive, I just don't know what to do next.
jnewt_ 2017-01-26 15:10:51
i can't click links in hexchat or right click->open in browser. any idea why? works fine on windows.
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:11:31
Mister, read the tutorial /msg ubottu usb
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:12:02
jnewt_, also how much ram do you have?
Mister 2017-01-26 15:14:12
Where can I find the tutorial?
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:14:33
Mister, /msg ubottu usb in your irc
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:16:27
Good evening.
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:16:44
Is trim enabled automatically or do I need to set it up myself?
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:17:20
I see this in the directory. #!/bin/sh
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:17:20
# trim all mounted file systems which support it
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:17:27
CountryfiedLinux, more info via irc bot: /msg ubottu trim
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:17:32
Am I good to go or do I need to add something?
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:17:41
depends on your ubuntu version
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:17:47
cfhowlett, 16.10
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:17:54
enabled by default
CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:18:13
cfhowlett, Oh ok. Same for Xubuntu 16.10?
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:18:22

CountryfiedLinux 2017-01-26 15:18:33

msk-mex 2017-01-26 15:18:59

cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:19:06

mrwn 2017-01-26 15:19:17
ok thanks
wedgie 2017-01-26 15:19:19
or a go channel
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:29:29
Stupid question - what happens if you completely delete the root user?
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:29:33
Is it even possible?
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:29:40
nothing but bad things. don't
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:30:05
cfhowlett: I'm asking out of curiosity... I would obviously never do it on a machine I cared about
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:30:42
it seems like the most impressive way to hose a system
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:30:48
gnomethrower, there's a YT video and a blog somewhere. it ain't pretty and it ain't recoverable
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:31:02
gnomethrower, there's a YT video and a blog somewhere. it ain't pretty and it ain't recoverable
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:31:29
ah, excellent
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:31:36
I've been looking for a blog/video with no success
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:32:30
cfhowlett: wait, do you mean delete the file root?
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:32:34
I mean the actual root user
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:33:04
gnomethrower, delete root ubuntu first hit on YT
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:33:28
cfhowlett: I get "How to remove Password in Ubuntu"
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:33:37
#3 is "Deleting the root directory ubuntu"
Mister 2017-01-26 15:36:36
I'm unfortunately still struggling to download rufus
Mister 2017-01-26 15:36:45
All I really want to do is play Spore.
rypervenche 2017-01-26 15:41:19
gnomethrower: I think you could get the root user back pretty easily.
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:41:53
rypervenche: That's my feeling too
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:42:09
I kinda want to destroy a Ubuntu VM and then try to recover it
gnomethrower 2017-01-26 15:42:18
at the very least it's an interesting War Games exercise for my org
rypervenche 2017-01-26 15:42:25
gnomethrower: Go for it. Experience is the best teacher.
cfhowlett 2017-01-26 15:42:33
and document it!
rypervenche 2017-01-26 15:43:16
gnomethrower: I can't really think of anything that would get ruined by it. You'd just need to recreate the user with uid 0 and gid 0. Aside from that and creating its group, I don't know that anything else would need changing.
sysadmin 2017-01-26 15:43:25
hi
sysadmin 2017-01-26 15:43:34
i need to download vsphereclient.vmware.com/vsphereclient/2/3/0/6/3/5/6/VMware-viclient-all-5.1.0-2306356.exe
rypervenche 2017-01-26 15:43:39
So really only three files would be affected. /etc/passwd, /etc/group, and /etc/shadow
sysadmin 2017-01-26 15:43:53
but i am limited
sysadmin 2017-01-26 15:44:20
can someone put it in another palace for me please?
