SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:45:09

Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:45:13
hello please help
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:45:16
yeah no mouse, i forgot
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:45:43
i am try to run sudo but when i type in my password it doesnt show up?!?!
wedgie 2017-01-29 08:45:59
Guest49687: passwords are purposely hidden
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:46:07
that is normal, just type your password and press ENTER
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:46:08
wedgie: what do you mean?
k1l_ 2017-01-29 08:46:08
Guest49687: it will never show the password. just type in blind
wedgie 2017-01-29 08:46:34
Guest49687: just type it and press enter. You won't see it on the screen but it'll work anyway
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:46:35
k1l_: i type in 'blind' and it says wrong password
k1l_ 2017-01-29 08:46:52
Guest49687: then its the wrong passwort
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:46:55
then you are typing it wrong, I'm afraid :P
b0bby__ 2017-01-29 08:46:58
Hey
k1l_ 2017-01-29 08:47:04
Guest49687: use the same password you use to login on that machine
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:47:14
i know that i could add the PPA and update irssi, but...
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:47:15
can i delete sudo - is very annoying?
b0bby__ 2017-01-29 08:47:22
How do I run a start up script(python3)
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:47:24
should i?
wedgie 2017-01-29 08:47:37
Guest49687: you could... but i wouldn't recommend it.
k1l_ 2017-01-29 08:47:44
Guest49687: ubuntu is build to use sudo.
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:47:52
i mean, if i can't update it with the main repositories is because a good reason, i suppose
ioria 2017-01-29 08:47:53
SaltyKawaiiNeko, you can use mouse in console with gpm
koffeinfriedhof 2017-01-29 08:48:06
Guest49687: You could...but then you've got some strange behaviours. Keep a live-usb next to you :)
k1l_ 2017-01-29 08:48:07
SaltyKawaiiNeko: is there something that doesnt work on that irssi version?
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:48:20
yes the SASL login
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:48:25
can i install jraphical interface in terminal?
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:48:28
i dont like it
Bashing-om 2017-01-29 08:48:43
SaltyKawaiiNeko: Several means to upgrade irssi . talk to the people in #irssi to explore your options .
pippasam1 2017-01-29 08:48:53
how do earth rotate?
koffeinfriedhof 2017-01-29 08:49:02
Guest49687: What Ubuntu do you use?
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:49:05
i don't want to break anything so i don't know if trying to update it adding a PPA is a good idea. this computer is not mine, technically... so i shoulnd't break anything
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:49:27
koffeinfriedhof: red hat ubuntu
koffeinfriedhof 2017-01-29 08:49:38
red hat ubuntu?
Guest49687 2017-01-29 08:49:43

b0bby__ start with a question
b0bby__ 2017-01-29 08:53:52
How do I run a start up script(python3)
b0bby__ 2017-01-29 08:55:18
MonkeyDust: any ideas?
SaltyKawaiiNeko 2017-01-29 08:57:07
well i learned a lot today, thank you very much for your time. i love ubuntu, it is very user friendly, more than i thought <3
koffeinfriedhof 2017-01-29 08:57:20
b0bby__: python3 /path/to/script.py
MonkeyDust_ 2017-01-29 08:58:01
b0bby__ if you don't get an answer here, ask in #python
b0bby__ 2017-01-29 08:58:19
koffeinfriedhof: Its a startup script(so thats a ubuntu question)
koffeinfriedhof 2017-01-29 08:59:16
b0bby__: /usr/bin/python3 /path/to/script.py in cron, .profile, autostart of your desktop environment...
ioria 2017-01-29 08:59:16
b0bby__, taken from where ?
SebthreeBQM10HD 2017-01-29 08:59:22
hi
ioria 2017-01-29 08:59:45
b0bby__, oh, you mean Autostart ?
b0bby__ 2017-01-29 09:00:36
koffeinfriedhof: I would prefer if it was a service script that can start as root during boot
koffeinfriedhof 2017-01-29 09:00:46
b0bby__: then use a systemd-service-unit if you are under 16.04 or 16.10
OerHeks 2017-01-29 09:05:34
if the writer of that script does not give information how to run during boot, are you sure it can properly?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:06:28
Hi, I'm running free -m on a Ubuntu system and the available column does not show up for some reason
wedgie 2017-01-29 09:06:52
waterdrop: pastebin the output?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:07:29
wedgie: http://pastebin.com/7NtAgjzN
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:07:50
htop shows 8.2 GB of memory used while top shows 35.7 GB of memory used..
wedgie 2017-01-29 09:08:19
waterdrop: also, fwiw, the columns i get match yours
OerHeks 2017-01-29 09:09:01
second line under free should be 'available'
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:09:14
waterdrop: what ubuntu is that exactly?
OerHeks 2017-01-29 09:09:18
enlarge your terminal perhaps?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:09:19
OerHeks: Oh I see
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:10:20
OerHeks: No, enlarging the terminal still does not show the available column
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:10:33
waterdrop: what ubuntu is that exactly?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:10:57
k1l_: Oh, sorry. It's Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:11:05
An amazon EC2 instance if that matters
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:11:31
yeah, the output you want to have is on newer versions. not 14.04
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:11:42
It looks like the second column under free does agree with the amount of memory htop says I'm using
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:11:48
on that version you need to calculate yourself.
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:11:58
k1l_: What number should I use to calculate myself?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:12:22
k1l_: Do you know if the second number under free is the right amount of available memory?
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:12:24
waterdrop: the "available" collumn is on the newer versions.
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:12:32
waterdrop: yes it is
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:12:36
Oh okay
ioria 2017-01-29 09:12:36
waterdrop, there is no 'available' column' on trusty desktop
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:12:47
linuxatemyram.com explains very good what is what
ioria 2017-01-29 09:13:22
waterdrop, grep MemTotal: /proc/meminfo
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:13:32
k1l_: Ok. So in the pastebin I posted, I have 56.9 GB of available RAM?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:13:52
And the "available" number is the number that matters right (when determining whether my applications have enough RAM)
ioria 2017-01-29 09:14:01
waterdrop, or sudo dmidecode --type 17
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:14:48
ioria: grep MemTotal: /proc/meminfo returns 65 GB
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:14:52
waterdrop: on that vservers/cloud the amount the system sees and the system can use can be 2 pair of shoes. i guess the hoster can tell you exact specifics there
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:15:10
I see
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:15:29
Hmm, any idea whether top or htop would be a more accurate indicator of how much memory my applications have available? Or are both unreliable?
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:15:37
waterdrop: but yes, on that paste i would say its 64/65GB and 56/57Gb free as in available
ioria 2017-01-29 09:15:59
waterdrop, sudo dmidecode --type 17 | grep Size to confirm
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:16:01
*64/65 in total
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:16:04
k1l_: Okay got it. And the available amount is the amount available to my applications, right? Sorry if that's a silly question.
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:16:43
ioria: sudo dmidecode —type 17 | grep Size returns about 16 GB
ioria 2017-01-29 09:16:53
oh
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:16:54
which is different from the available amount according to free -m
ioria 2017-01-29 09:18:29
waterdrop, you need to sum the lines ...
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:18:39
waterdrop: linuxatemyram.com explains very good what caches and buffers and free means on that table.
ioria 2017-01-29 09:18:43
waterdrop, it outputs just one line ?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:18:49
ioria: Oh, but then that's just my total RAM, not the amount available
ioria 2017-01-29 09:19:05
waterdrop, sure
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:19:27
ioria: Ya I know my total RAM, just trying to confirm the amount available
ioria 2017-01-29 09:19:45
waterdrop, grep MemAvailable: /proc/meminfo
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:20:49
that line doesn't print any output
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:21:02
hi all, Unable to locate package lm_sensors. What do you guys think of this? running Xenial (Gnome 16.04) amd64
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:21:31
ioria: grep MemAvailable: /proc/meminfo doesn't print any output to the terminal for me
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:21:41
cybex_: universe enabled?
ioria 2017-01-29 09:21:44
waterdrop, cat /proc/meminfo and check the first 3 lines
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:22:58
MemTotal: 65 GB, MemFree: 16 GB, Buffers: some small number, Cached: 40 GB
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:23:14
ioria: Available would be MemFree + Cached, right?
ioria 2017-01-29 09:23:33
waterdrop, weird, i have MemAvailable ...
wedgie 2017-01-29 09:23:53
ioria: you're probably not on 14.04
ioria 2017-01-29 09:24:03
wedgie, i'am
wedgie 2017-01-29 09:24:17
weird. I am too and I do not have MemAvailable
ioria 2017-01-29 09:24:41

ioria 2017-01-29 09:25:28
wedgie, hwe 4.4.0-59-generic
Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:25:47
how to I get a nightly build of ubuntu 17.04
wedgie 2017-01-29 09:25:50
ah, i've got the older 3.13. Guess i should update that at some point. But I guess that could account for the difference
ioria 2017-01-29 09:26:00
wedgie, i see
wedgie 2017-01-29 09:26:35
waterdrop: update your hardware enablement stack and you'll probably get MemAvailable :P
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:26:38
surfr1: the best is the one you can work with best :) so test the regular ones yourself or ask in #ubuntu-offtopic for what people use and why
pavlos 2017-01-29 09:27:03

surfr1: Purely a personal thing . Me I prefer irssi . Terminal based - fast - light - and configurable and great addon support base .
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:27:51
hi all, apologies if I missed a response for me, had a ... kernel panic. regarding the ' Unable to locate package "lm_sensors" ' for Xenial X amd64? any thoughts on this?
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:27:53
But I think available should be free + cached? That's what http://www.linuxatemyram.com/ says "available memory (or free + buffers/cache..)
waterdrop 2017-01-29 09:28:00
So I'm assuming it's accurate for my system too
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:28:13
cybex_: universe enabled?
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:28:24
let me have a look, it should be
Bashing-om 2017-01-29 09:29:01
!info lm-sensors xenial
ubottu 2017-01-29 09:29:04
lm-sensors (source: lm-sensors): utilities to read temperature/voltage/fan sensors. In component universe, is extra. Version 1:3.4.0-2 (xenial), package size 83 kB, installed size 367 kB

I feel like an idiot, thanks for that
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:30:14

Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:30:58
is it possible to try out unity 8 on the live usb
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:31:26
also, on the subject of sensors, etc. How do you guys feel about conky as a "system monitor", I prefer gnome ext : system-monitor. which is...beter?
xangua 2017-01-29 09:31:45
Guy1524: 16.10 comes with a unity 8 preview session
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:31:47
I know conky does not actually monitor the system, but the use of it
Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:32:02
i just want to test thru v
Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:32:07
*vm
xangua 2017-01-29 09:32:26
cybex_: depends what desktop you use, but conky doesn't really depends on any desktop
k1l_ 2017-01-29 09:32:31
cybex_: i prefer an indicator in the panel. i dont have any desktop clear to let conky showing on there.
SebthreeBQM10HD 2017-01-29 09:33:22
Guy1524, ok go to http://omgubuntu.co.uk they have a blog post about the 17.04 alpha 2. with a download link for flavours to I think, there isn't much to test right now anyway, it will mostlly look and work like 16.10 for everything
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:33:24
k1l_ as a fellow developer (hope I didn't assume incorrectly), I feel you on this. That is why I prefer the panel "version"
cybex_ 2017-01-29 09:33:39
but thanks for the feedback
Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:34:14
SebthreeBQM10HD: I downloaded the 17.04 daily build, but on the live session I cant log out and boot into unity 8
SebthreeBQM10HD 2017-01-29 09:34:17
Guy1524, ubuntu isn't even in 17.04 alpha 2. ther ewon't be an ubuntu untill beta 2. also your whole question would be more suitable in #ubuntu+1 since its to do with the upcoming currently in development release, slo yes off topic here
Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:34:21
nvm figured it out
SebthreeBQM10HD 2017-01-29 09:35:19
Guy1524, Unity 8 won't do much by default on the desktlop as well, but there are ways to add in snaps et
SebthreeBQM10HD 2017-01-29 09:35:22
etc
Guy1524 2017-01-29 09:35:25
