avoider 2017-01-30 14:49:08
any ideas how to get it to work?
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 14:50:52
avoider: you might need to create a udev rule to load whatever module that usb wifi needs
avoider 2017-01-30 14:51:36
how do i do this? i been struglling with this for days before i came here for help
avoider 2017-01-30 14:51:44
looked several places on forums.
minimec 2017-01-30 14:51:57
avoider: Looks like you had to compile the driver for that device yourself on earlier ubuntu versions. http://askubuntu.com/a/642812
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 14:52:08
oh, or that
ckeeney 2017-01-30 14:52:50
js
minimec 2017-01-30 14:53:11
avoider: Check with 'iwconfig' if the wifi device is recognized. Also check lsmod for the eventually loaded drivers.
avoider 2017-01-30 14:53:27
i used that site to install everything
mlw 2017-01-30 14:53:59
Has anyone here had any luck with setting up a monodevelop/monogame environment in 16.04?
adymitruk 2017-01-30 14:59:44
I'm using alpine mail and it keeps opening links in firefox instead of chromium. Chromium is my default browser. xdg-open google.com from the command line does the expected and opens a new tab in chromium. I changed the url viewer is alpine to xdg-open and it keeps launching firefox. Any ideas?
avoider 2017-01-30 15:12:21
i followed that tutioual
avoider 2017-01-30 15:12:24
nothing happened.
avoider 2017-01-30 15:12:28
i even rebooted.
avoider 2017-01-30 15:12:57
http://pastebin.com/4ZNBSfFL
avoider 2017-01-30 15:13:01
i see its detecting it.
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:13:27
but it's only detecting the USB device, you still need it to load the correct module so that it can bind to it
avoider 2017-01-30 15:13:38
so how do i do that?
avoider 2017-01-30 15:13:48
i followed copy to paste
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:13:50
I think someone posted a link
avoider 2017-01-30 15:13:56
from that tut that was provided
avoider 2017-01-30 15:14:00
i did that.
avoider 2017-01-30 15:14:14
i even redit it says everything is installed/there
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:14:14
if you lsmod, is that rtlwhatever module loaded?

Hello, does anyone here know how to work base16 builder?
avoider 2017-01-30 15:16:35
that is the output from lsmod
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:16:52
OK, I'm not sure... r8169 might be it, but it also might not
avoider 2017-01-30 15:17:43
how can i load it by command?
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:18:27
'modprobe ' , replacing with the name of the module you built from the instructions
avoider 2017-01-30 15:19:47
foreal@foreal-desktop:~$ modprobe rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux
avoider 2017-01-30 15:19:47
modprobe: FATAL: Module rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux not found in directory /lib/modules/4.4.0-59-generic
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:20:02
OK, you didn't build the module then
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:20:21
it's not likely called the name of the directory
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:20:57
also, I'm not sure you can modprobe as non-root
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:21:27
hello i was wondering how to use a windows wireless driver in kubuntu 16.04 as i have noticed the windows wireless drivers install utility is not listed in that version
k1l 2017-01-30 15:21:58
hank8989: you dont use windows drivers anymore.
avoider 2017-01-30 15:22:29
i tried with root
avoider 2017-01-30 15:22:31
same error
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:22:35
ah ok than how to i install the driver for my wireless network adapter when it has interet because the wireless adapter is not working
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:22:42
hank8989: Use additional drivers application to load extra drivers but you may need to tether for internet access
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:22:49
OK you'll need to go back to that tutorial and be sure to build the module correctly
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:23:11
make sure you have dkms installed.
k1l 2017-01-30 15:23:27
hank8989: that depends on the exact card in use. "lspci" or "lsusb" will list them. show the output on paste.ubuntu.com
avoider 2017-01-30 15:26:16
i did all them steps
avoider 2017-01-30 15:26:17
correctly
avoider 2017-01-30 15:26:35
and dkms is installed
avoider 2017-01-30 15:26:40
everything says its installed.
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:26:54
OK, what does 'dkms status' say
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:26:55
?
avoider 2017-01-30 15:27:43
root@foreal-desktop:~# dkms status
avoider 2017-01-30 15:27:43

Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:27:52
hmmmmm
minimec 2017-01-30 15:28:18
avoider: the name of the module is either 'rtl8812au' or '8821au'. Maybe just try to reboot once and plug the dongle...
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:28:29
^
Sean_McG 2017-01-30 15:28:43
the instructions suggest you don't have to reboot
avoider 2017-01-30 15:28:45
so unplug it and reboot?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:28:59
avoider: did you try using additional drivers application?
avoider 2017-01-30 15:29:17
i new to linux so some of this is greek to me.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:29:34
thas ok we were all there once before
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:29:47
some sooner then later
avoider 2017-01-30 15:30:10
all i did was find that site before i came here
avoider 2017-01-30 15:30:19
did all the steps over and over
minimec 2017-01-30 15:30:34
avoider: You can reboot with the device plugged. That should do.
avoider 2017-01-30 15:30:40
ok
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:30:45
try opening additional drivers see if it lists the firware for the wifi card
zxl 2017-01-30 15:31:20
anyone knows how to cross compile kernel
minimec 2017-01-30 15:31:22
avoider: The driver should be loaded automatically if installed correctly.
zxl 2017-01-30 15:31:34
i always fail
avoider 2017-01-30 15:31:42
minimec, there is no wrong way to do it if you copy and paste.
avoider 2017-01-30 15:31:51
and it tells me when i redo it its all installed.
minimec 2017-01-30 15:31:58
avoider: I agree..
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:32:23

Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:34:21
Hello! Reference picture: https://i.imgur.com/kKap1VO.png
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:34:21
Does anyone know if it's possible increase the size of the active and selected "indicator" dots on the unity launcher?
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:34:26
kl1: its a netgear wna3100 broadcom bcm43231 chipset usb adapter
foreal 2017-01-30 15:34:29
okay i rebooted, nothing happened.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:34:36
If it's not possible to increase the size of the dots via a UI option or configuration file change then maybe someone can tell me where the source images for them are located?
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:34:36
I gave /usr/share/unity/icons/ a couple of passes with my eyes already, but I didn't see them there.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:35:07
Watcher7: are you talking about the boot splash loader plymouth or the login?
Bashing-om 2017-01-30 15:35:08
!bcm | hank8989
ubottu 2017-01-30 15:35:08
hank8989: Help with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:35:24
Biosphere_50, talking about the launcher panel.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:35:40
As in the one that holds active and 'favorite' applications.
foreal 2017-01-30 15:35:49
minimec, you still here?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:36:16
you mean the active windows that show a little tiny dot underneath?
minimec 2017-01-30 15:36:16
foreal: Yes... Did we talk before?
foreal 2017-01-30 15:36:21
avoider
foreal 2017-01-30 15:36:27
im on the ubuntu machine.
minimec 2017-01-30 15:36:37
foreal: Ok.
foreal 2017-01-30 15:36:38
so i don't have to run back forth from pc to pc.
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:36:53
mine is not supported under that driver :-(
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:36:56
Biosphere_50, yeah, with a dot above showing the current 'selected' application.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:37:05
I'm wondering where the source images for those dots are.
foreal 2017-01-30 15:37:18
I just don't seem to understand it displays the device, the drivers installed, still not work.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:37:19
Or if they can have their size increased via some other way.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:37:24
Watcher7: unfortunately I haven't messed with that before but i'm xubuntu so i don't use the unity panel sorry
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:37:35
That's ok, thank you for your time.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:37:38
Watcher7: if you enlarge the panel does it make it bigger
minimec 2017-01-30 15:37:38
foreal: What does 'iwconfig' say?
foreal 2017-01-30 15:37:56
enp2s0 no wireless extensions.
foreal 2017-01-30 15:37:56
lo no wireless extensions.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:38:03
I've not tested that, but I'd prefer to keep the panel at its current size.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:38:08
I would assume it would be an appearance thing... theme maybe
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:38:25
I understand but if you change the size does it enlarge or not just curious
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:38:35
I've looked there and also in the unity tweak application, but I've not seen it referenced in any of the menus.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:38:52
One second.
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:38:59
in 14.04 i used the windows wireless drivers to install my drivers
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:39:36
Biosphere_50, yes the dots scale to match application icon size.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:39:42
oh ok
minimec 2017-01-30 15:39:48
foreal: I see.. I don't really know how to give you further help. I can point you to the official installation guide of the driver developer @ github... https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:39:57
so I believe it would be a theme option or script file that would do that
foreal 2017-01-30 15:40:10
okay thanks mate.
foreal 2017-01-30 15:40:13
appericate it.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:40:15
whateve theme your using for your unity desktop see if you can find the folder and see whats inside
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:40:27
should be a script thing
minimec 2017-01-30 15:40:38
foreal: No problem.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:41:52
Biosphere_50, I just switched themes to see if the 'dots' changed. It does seem that the dots are actually theme dependent.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:41:59
I thought they were the same across themes.
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:42:15
I think the themes I used for testing that earlier were so similar that
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:42:28
I reached the conclusion that it was unity itself that handled them
Watcher7 2017-01-30 15:42:38
I'll dig around in the GTK theme now.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 15:42:44
aight good luck
hank8989 2017-01-30 15:42:50
thank you for the help
