cvn57l1sddk42ljq 2017-01-30 16:46:29
Is there an easy way to reversibly switch from a live wary 5.5.1 linux to ubuntu?
u0_a174 2017-01-30 16:47:11
i dount know i only just got here
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:48:13
cvn57l1sddk42ljq: you want both or just switch
cvn57l1sddk42ljq 2017-01-30 16:50:02
let's try both, I am mostly just curious; otherwise, bad case I will reboot wary
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:50:21
cvn57l1sddk42ljq: need to create a new partiion
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:50:41
cvn57l1sddk42ljq: if you have a seperate disk even better
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:51:16
cvn57l1sddk42ljq: whats your bootloader will probably need grub2 thats whats i'm familiar with
cvn57l1sddk42ljq 2017-01-30 16:51:20
can this be done if I don't have a permanent disk, like no harddisk or flashdisk or floppy
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:51:29
ya
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:51:40
well you need hard drive space at least
cvn57l1sddk42ljq 2017-01-30 16:52:04
oh, will ram space work?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:52:11
create a new ext4 partiion install ubuntu on it then update your grub to detect the new os then select on startup
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:52:40
backup everything
cvn57l1sddk42ljq 2017-01-30 16:52:59
nvm, I can't even backup this system ...
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:53:05
cuz you need to make sure when you install the new os you don't overwrite your existing os
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:53:19
sepearte disk is best
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:53:24
physical
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:53:29
flashdrive would work
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:54:10
but its slow
ob9 2017-01-30 16:56:41
I have an old Dell D600 i'm trying to turn into a file server(just to teach myself how to do it outside of a VM really) - if i put install the last non-pae ubuntu server release(11.04 I think), would it possible to upgrade to a new version of ubuntu server?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 16:57:51
ob9: you want to keep data?
Bashing-om 2017-01-30 17:00:19
ob9: Now 14.04 Lubuntu has support for non-pae: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2211590 .
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:06:31
Hey guy! I've been wondering how to install a tar.gz package using the terminal.
JohnDoe2 2017-01-30 17:07:04
.tar.gz is an archive format, just like .zip
JohnDoe2 2017-01-30 17:07:22
to unarchive it you can use tar zxf archive.name.tar.gz
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:07:47
ok ill try that thanks
rypervenche 2017-01-30 17:07:52
citizen_: The better question is why are you trying to install a package outside of the package manager?
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:08:08
because its not in the package manager
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:09:18
I says file cant be located.
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:09:35
Do I need to do "sudo" ???
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:09:44
*It
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:10:53
citizen_: you need to extract it first someplace tar -zxv "achive.tar.gz"
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:11:23
biosphere: I already did that.
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:11:42
Maybe I should go back to windows...
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:13:07
citizen_: what you get out of it a make file or
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:13:10
.deb
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:13:58
if you using ubuntu you should be using apt-get install package
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:14:00
That won't work either
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:14:16
Arent we all on Ubuntu?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:14:34
what the package your trying to install
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:14:49

Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:15:06

citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:15:29
You mean what version I'm using?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:15:34
yes
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:15:46
I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 MATE
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:20:47
cibs: its not availabler for our version I guess from what i'm seeing... because it has old dependencies
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:20:57
cibs: sorry
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:21:02
It's cool
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:21:11

citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:21:41
Do you think Windows 10 is better than Ubuntu MATE
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:21:57
Cause I wanna switch
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:22:14
citizen_: i'm not a liberty to discuss windows since I can't stand windows
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:22:24
Why not?
JohnDoe2 2017-01-30 17:22:39
better is very subjective. Use whatever operating system works for your specific needs.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:22:40
citizen_: I would recommmend kubuntu 16.04 for you install with kde4 plasma if your windows 10 buff
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:23:12
I think Windows 10 is bad as well way too many viruses
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:23:32
The first time I started up Vista I already got pop ups.
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:23:45
its unstable
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:24:01
lets just say I don't have to reboot
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:24:08
ever
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:24:22
So how else can I burn an .iso to my usb?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:24:31

citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:24:37

Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:24:42

citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:25:47
I know. So is Microsoft
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:26:37
but it will overwrite the drive
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:27:07
make sure you pick the correct drive and use the iso as your if
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:27:18
If?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:27:26

citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:27:28
Is it possible to just
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:27:35
use a gui
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:27:47
Directly place the iso image to the usb
citizen_ 2017-01-30 17:28:04
Will it still work?
Biosphere_50 2017-01-30 17:28:19
