phiona > the bug is there for months, from the beginning
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:45:42

phiona 2017-01-29 18:46:29
sirv: maybe they forgot. haha.
sirv 2017-01-29 18:48:39
phiona > maybe not enough users use that phatch application . never heard of it before
sirv 2017-01-29 18:49:20
noobish so the external usb drive is 1TB right ?
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:49:28
Yes.
lotuspsychje 2017-01-29 18:49:31
phiona: try to follow-up your own bug, more change that it will get solved
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:49:54
Live CD is 8 gigs. 2 other drives - 500gigs and 100gigs.
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:50:17
How good/bad is the idea of having a RAID-1 using two external USB Hard Drives?
sirv 2017-01-29 18:50:27
noobish so now u can follow these instructions, it is just like 10 commands u need to run http://howtoubuntu.org/how-to-repair-restore-reinstall-grub-2-with-a-ubuntu-live-cd
phiona 2017-01-29 18:50:35
lotuspsychje: it is already solved.
sirv 2017-01-29 18:50:50
noobish > the external usb drive is /dev/sdc1
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:51:18
Thanks sirv!
lotuspsychje 2017-01-29 18:51:50
Mr_Cyclops: usb hard drives are a bottleneck for speed over usb
sirv 2017-01-29 18:52:04
why do u install it on external drive anyway ? .. it is best to install to internal
lotuspsychje 2017-01-29 18:52:08
Mr_Cyclops: perhaps the ##hardware guys can more help you on this?
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:52:30
sirv - I'm making a temporary computer for my friend while his real computer is being repaired.
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:52:42
lotuspsychje, true, what if the speed isn't an issue (I don't have much to backup regularly), but just that I have enough external HDDs, so .... a random thought?
sirv 2017-01-29 18:53:04
cyclops > very bad to use usb drives for system or for raid .... u will get data corruption or loss soon .... my personal experience
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:53:14
sirv, Ouch .....
sirv 2017-01-29 18:53:34
cyclops > also for backups ... i dont trust USB .. they sometime put low quality drives in USB enclosures
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:53:43
I heard even the NAS solutions like Synology etc. use Linux MDM in the backend?
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:54:04
sirv, what would be your personal suggestion on that end?
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:54:07
Sirv - I did the first command and nothing happened. Was nothing supposed to happen?
lotuspsychje 2017-01-29 18:54:41
Mr_Cyclops: lets stick to ubuntu issues in this channel only
sirv 2017-01-29 18:55:13
noobish > it is ok .. but u ised /dev/sdc1 right ?
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:55:34
Yes sirv
sirv 2017-01-29 18:56:10
cyclops > i dont really know ... but i'am just very cautios with usb drives .. i had big data loss because i trusted usb backup
sirv 2017-01-29 18:56:38
cyclop > the WD usb drive failed compeletely on me ,,, without any warning signs
sirv 2017-01-29 18:57:14
cyclops > but there is OS for NAS systems .. u can build your own nas
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:57:50
I see, sirv thanks for sharing your experience. Looks like having 2 sets of backup is important (provided what kind of data you got)
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:57:56
fail-safe for a fail-safe
sirv 2017-01-29 18:58:01
cyclops > and i would go or ZFS filesystem
Mr_Cyclops 2017-01-29 18:58:17
ZFS .... good recovery option(s) ?
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:58:50
sirv - when I do grub-install /dev/sdX do I put sdc1 or just sdc?
sirv 2017-01-29 18:59:13
just sdc
Noobish2 2017-01-29 18:59:33
Thanks
sirv 2017-01-29 19:00:17
cyclops ... hmm .. a drive can fail, or more drives , depending on configuration ... and the system can recover
sirv 2017-01-29 19:01:03
cyclops > but u can add drives anytime with ZFS .. u just throw in aniother drive without any rebuilding of the system
sirv 2017-01-29 19:03:09
cyclops > anything is better than having an USB RAID solution
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:03:17
Okay I messed up somewhere and now I can't restart. sudo mount /dev/dsc1 returns with mount: can't find /dev/dsc1 in /etc/fstab
sirv 2017-01-29 19:03:40
sdc1
sirv 2017-01-29 19:03:44
not dsc1
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:03:57
.... Right.
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:04:18
@Noobish2 sudo mkdir /mnt/usb ; sudo mount /dev/dsc1 /mnt/usb
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:04:33
is it /dev/dsc1 !!!!
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:05:10
is should /dev/sdc1 or /dev/sdb1
sirv 2017-01-29 19:05:22
sdc1 is the drive he installed ubuntu on
sirv 2017-01-29 19:05:28
SDC1
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:05:37
sdc1
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:05:45
Yes
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:05:47
yup
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:06:07
Special device /devsdc1 does not exist.
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:06:08
run that cmmand !
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:06:31
sudo fdisk -l
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:06:40
lsusb
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:06:54
fdisk -lsusb?
sirv 2017-01-29 19:07:29
noobish u are doing the --bind commands ? there u do not use the drive .. there u use already the mounter folder /mnt/...
chandan 2017-01-29 19:07:32
Hi all, Even after invoking "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade", i still have a 4.4 kernel on my ubuntu 16.04.1 machine
chandan 2017-01-29 19:07:43
How can i upgrade to a 4.8 kernel?
xangua 2017-01-29 19:07:58
!hwe
ubottu 2017-01-29 19:07:58
The Ubuntu LTS enablement stacks provide newer kernel and X support for existing LTS releases, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack
xangua 2017-01-29 19:08:07
chandan: see above
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:08:11
@chandan uname -a ????
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:09:49
http://pastebin.com/qxEHNE4r sirv
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:10:00
@chandan pest the output , uname -a ; uname -; arch; cat /etc/issue
chandan 2017-01-29 19:11:07
_0x7f_: It is a ppc64le machine. I am not sure if i am allowed to paste the output of 'uname -a' ... but here is 'uname -r' ...
chandan 2017-01-29 19:11:09
root@Ubuntu-16:~# uname -r
chandan 2017-01-29 19:11:11
4.4.0-59-generic
chandan 2017-01-29 19:11:30
xangua: I will read up that wiki page
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:11:37
chandan - when in doubt, use pastebin.
chandan 2017-01-29 19:12:36
Noobish2: I think you misunderstood my prev statement. I don't think i am allowed to share the output of 'uname -a'. Hence i shared the output of 'uname -r'
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:13:05
Oh okay.
koen_ 2017-01-29 19:14:49
what is system specific cron
koen_ 2017-01-29 19:14:53
what is the cron that resides in /var/spool/cron
koen_ 2017-01-29 19:15:06
and what is the difference between that and /etc/crontab
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:16:05
I accidentally knocked off my ext hard drive, will that do anything?
chandan 2017-01-29 19:18:22
xangua: "apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-xenial" gives me a newer 4.4 kernel and not the 4.8 kernel
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:18:33
@koen_ do not use /etc/crontab , it's used by system most of time. and the system will rewrite your configuration, if you write somthing /etc/crontab
xangua 2017-01-29 19:18:54
chandan: try with yakketty
chandan 2017-01-29 19:18:59
ok
xangua 2017-01-29 19:19:06
16.10
xangua 2017-01-29 19:19:27
!16.10
ubottu 2017-01-29 19:19:27
Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) is the current release of Ubuntu. Download at http://www.ubuntu.com/download - Read the release notes at https://ubottu.com/y/yakkety
koen_ 2017-01-29 19:19:39
_0x7f_: so whenever i create cron,i use this command crontab -e.. does this write in /etc/crontab or from /var/spool/cron
xangua 2017-01-29 19:19:45
"yakkety" I mean chandan
chandan 2017-01-29 19:19:55
ok
sirv 2017-01-29 19:20:02
noobish ... if u cannot install Ubuntu on internal drive, maybe it is better for your friend just to use the LIVE version
sirv 2017-01-29 19:20:37
noobish > when u boot the live version u can do a suspend and the again wake the computer, or he can boot the live cd everyday
sirv 2017-01-29 19:20:55
leave him with the CD in the drive
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:21:08
Can he save thigns on the live CD?
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:21:43
@ Kone_ /var/spool/cron it's cron default pool location
sirv 2017-01-29 19:21:48
to the external harddrive for example yes
Noobish2 2017-01-29 19:22:14
Alright, thanks for your help sirv!
Xz 2017-01-29 19:23:58
hi there, question about Ubuntu live system
Xz 2017-01-29 19:24:16
I want to build persistent version - does it use squashfs, or some .iso image?
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:25:24
@Xz .ISO
Xz 2017-01-29 19:25:55
_0x7f_: can I force to use another partition on USB stick instead of ISO?
Xz 2017-01-29 19:26:25
_0x7f_: I'm assuming I would have to modify initrd.lz
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:26:34
it's not work like that
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:26:38
@Xz
Xz 2017-01-29 19:26:50
_0x7f_: well, initrd.lz mounts that iso and then chroots into it, right?
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:26:52
dd you iso
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:28:47
@Xz
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:28:51
dd if=kali-linux-2016.2-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=64M
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:29:03
read start _ < <(du -bcm kali-linux-2016.2-amd64.iso | tail -1); echo $start
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:29:11
parted /dev/sdb mkpart primary $start $end
Xz 2017-01-29 19:29:21
_0x7f_: well, I want to use live distro
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:29:37
yes
Xz 2017-01-29 19:29:45
_0x7f_: with small modification of having rootfs as a partition instead of iso
tyro_1 2017-01-29 19:30:13
I'm a complete newbie to Ubuntu. What are some of the coolest commands I should know?
Xz 2017-01-29 19:30:28
tyro_1: poweroff
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:30:37
@Xz need more info.....
Xz 2017-01-29 19:30:47
_0x7f_: what do you mean?
noobish_ 2017-01-29 19:30:56
I figured out what was wrong. The sd number changed from sdc to sde
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:31:42
@Xz what you trying to do.......
Xz 2017-01-29 19:32:02
_0x7f_: I have very specific setup that boots in UEFI secure mode and I need to install Ubuntu on USB stick
Xz 2017-01-29 19:32:23
_0x7f_: I already tried installing regular Ubuntu (not live version) on that stick, but UEFI doesn't boot that
Xz 2017-01-29 19:32:37
_0x7f_: I can only get USB-live distro to boot on my machine
Xz 2017-01-29 19:33:15
_0x7f_: so I want to customize USB-live distro to have permanent partition with rootfs on it instead of using squashfs/iso
_0x7f_ 2017-01-29 19:34:08
okayyyy...@Xz it's look i need to work on that.......
Xz 2017-01-29 19:34:36
_0x7f_: well, it shouldn't be too dificult, right?
noobish_ 2017-01-29 19:35:21
sirv - I got it!
noobish_ 2017-01-29 19:35:34
Gonna try restarting to see if it worked.
Xz 2017-01-29 19:35:38
_0x7f_: I could first create USB-live permanent stick, then dd the ISO that it created onto another partition and then modify initrd.lz to a) not mount that iso, b) mount another partition instead, c) chroot into that
Noobish 2017-01-29 19:37:53
Hmm... Still getting the grub rescue
Noobish 2017-01-29 19:41:51
It's behaving like grub didnt intsall at all
bigLanky 2017-01-29 19:42:14
anyone run x2 NVIDIA cards on Ubuntu 16.04?
