Xz: you need to select the esp for the bootloader, _not_ the full device as with legacy boot.
Xz 2017-01-27 22:45:22
ducasse: let's say I format the usb stick and start from scratch - does my process make sense? I mean 1. remove SSD, 2. attach USB, 3. install on that USB, 4. put SSD back, 5. boot off USB or SSD in secure mode
Xz 2017-01-27 22:46:06
ducasse: because that way I have 2 EFI partitions on two separate devices.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:47:13
Xz: you should probably read the uefi page on the arch wiki, especially this - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface#efibootmgr
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:47:40
dagerik: which ubuntu version?
Xz 2017-01-27 22:49:37
ducasse: the problem is if I start messing with EFI partition on SSD, then bitlocker on that drive starts complaining. Eventually I might fckup win10 that sits on SSD. The problem is that it is corporate laptop and that win10 has to work.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:50:09
Xz: no need to ever touch it.
Xz 2017-01-27 22:50:32
ducasse: so I play only with bcfg on USB EFI partition?
Capprentice 2017-01-27 22:50:53
how to change network manager settings under ubuntu 16.10 from ssh over remote connection?
Xz 2017-01-27 22:51:28
Capprentice: apt-get remove network-manager
Xz 2017-01-27 22:51:38
Capprentice: unless you really want it :)
Xz 2017-01-27 22:51:55
Capprentice: I'm kidding
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:52:10
Xz: you don't do anything special with any disk at all, you modify the efi boot variables.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:52:29
Capprentice: nmcli
Xz 2017-01-27 22:52:38
ducasse: that's what might get bitlocker on SSD pissed off
Xz 2017-01-27 22:53:36
ducasse: I changed something once and it wouldn't boot anymore, bitlocker was saying 'policy changed, not booting'. I managed somehow to revert it, so it boots win10 now. But it was scary. I'm afraid if I start messing with BIOS it will come back and I will not be able to get win10 to boot anymore.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:54:49
Xz: i have no idea about bitlocker, ask the ##windows people about that.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:55:53
Xz: but try to install correctly to usb then simply select it as boot device.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:56:25
Xz: just select the usb esp for grub.
Xz 2017-01-27 22:56:46
ducasse: that's what I tried the other day - after selecting USB it would go right to SSD and kick off bitlocker
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:57:16
Xz: was grub installed correctly?
Xz 2017-01-27 22:57:34
ducasse: I might have done something wrong in Ubuntu installer while partitioning and selecting partition for grub
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:57:58
Xz: that was what i was trying to say, yes.
Xz 2017-01-27 22:58:08
ducasse: I figured there is couple of options, you can select /dev/sdx as a device, or /dev/sdx1, /dev/sdx2 etc.
Xz 2017-01-27 22:58:19
ducasse: so should I install it to particular partition? or just select device?
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:58:32
Xz: select the efi partition.
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:58:44
Xz: NOT the full device
Xz 2017-01-27 22:58:57
ducasse: ok, I can try that
Xz 2017-01-27 22:59:11
ducasse: do I have to create EFI partition, or I can ask ubuntu installer to partition device for me?
ducasse 2017-01-27 22:59:44
Xz: just choose auto-partitioning
Xz 2017-01-27 23:00:02
ducasse: ok, will try that - autopartitioning and then put grub onto EFI partition
ducasse 2017-01-27 23:00:08
Xz: (if the ssd is disconnected)
Xz 2017-01-27 23:00:19
ducasse: yes, I can disconnect SSD in bios
ducasse 2017-01-27 23:01:31
Xz: it should work, firmware doesn't know if you are booting an installer or full os. there is no difference in how they boot, basically.
Xz 2017-01-27 23:02:03
ducasse: are you saying all the way up to GRUB there is no difference between LIVE and REGULAR distro?
Xz 2017-01-27 23:02:33
ducasse: because I can boot LIVE just fine, as well as installer
ducasse 2017-01-27 23:03:11
Xz: live basically is an installed system.

Xz 2017-01-27 23:04:12

hi, i have a question, but i'm not certain it's related to ubuntu: today all of a sudden i hear a very load noise, like a sine wave coming from the computer (running ubuntu) or the screen - i haven't determined which yet; anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
