#ubuntu channel featuring groundze1o, SPeedY, k1l_, glache, intx, akik, and 9 others.

SPeedY 2017-01-29 10:48:39
this is what I have http://pastebin.com/kAHYXkdK
OS2_ID384D 2017-01-29 10:49:29
got to dinner - bye
akik 2017-01-29 10:56:25
SPeedY: do "sudo ifdown eth1" and "sudo ifup eth1" work without problems?
intx 2017-01-29 11:04:46
apt-get install rsyslogd gets stuck on the postinst script, how do I find out what is causing it?
intx 2017-01-29 11:05:00
or rather, what specific part of postinst is causing it?
bekks 2017-01-29 11:05:35
Take a look at that script, maybe.
intx 2017-01-29 11:05:56
I did, but I don't see anything in that should be causing it
bekks 2017-01-29 11:06:30
So what happens when ou execute it with set -xv being set?
intx 2017-01-29 11:06:46
haven't tried that
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:07:02
intx: usually the apt shows what is happening
intx 2017-01-29 11:07:19
not in my case, it just shows
intx 2017-01-29 11:07:20
Setting up rsyslog (8.12.0-1ubuntu2) ...
intx 2017-01-29 11:07:20
The user `syslog' is already a member of `adm'.
intx 2017-01-29 11:07:25
-- and then it hangs here
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:07:53
hello..i open sudo nethogs..and it always shows me "? root unknown TCP"...even if i don't have any apps running..is this normal?
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:07:59
or am i being spied on?
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:08:09
user 0 opens a session hourly for root
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:08:23
intx: what ubuntu is that?
intx 2017-01-29 11:08:27
15.10
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:08:29
how can i make sure that nobody spies on me? (i have a vpn already)
SPeedY 2017-01-29 11:08:40
akik: I get RTNETLINK answer: File Exists - Failed to bring up eth1
intx 2017-01-29 11:08:48
bekks: -xv helped, it seems to hang on systemd-tmpfiles --create /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/xconsole.conf /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/00rsyslog.conf
tonyt 2017-01-29 11:08:53
i have 1 ssd with windows 10 and another ssd with ubuntu on it. is there a took i can put on a usb stick to make both duel boot? trying not to have to reinstall either OS
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:08:57
intx: well, that is outdated and no one will fix stuff there
akik 2017-01-29 11:09:29
SPeedY: so did ifdown work?
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:09:30
do I recall correctly that root logins are not allowed with any method?
reisio 2017-01-29 11:09:46
FManTropyx: only by default
tonyt 2017-01-29 11:09:50
tool that is
reisio 2017-01-29 11:09:52
you can configure root login, if you like
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:10:01
should I do something special after installing the OpenSSH daemon on my desktop-Ubuntu?
reisio 2017-01-29 11:10:09
FManTropyx: so root can ssh in?
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:10:20
nah, that won't be necessary
reisio 2017-01-29 11:10:34
I'm asking you want you're trying to do, not what would be necessary
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:10:34
rather, so that preferrably random people cannot :)
bekks 2017-01-29 11:10:43
FManTropyx: All you need to do is starting the ssh server, after installing it :)
reisio 2017-01-29 11:11:01
should start itself, IIRC
intx 2017-01-29 11:12:04
k1l_: would upgrade if I had the choice, it is on a paid vpn and I have to choose from one of their existing images
intx 2017-01-29 11:12:12
bekks: thanks, figured it out :) appreciate the help
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:12:48
intx: if you pay for it i would suggest you tell them to not ship insecure releases.
bekks 2017-01-29 11:12:48
intx: Which doesnt make it being supported. :P
\9 2017-01-29 11:13:27
FManTropyx: "user 0 opens a session hourly for root" sounds like cron at work
bekks 2017-01-29 11:13:37
intx: If they dont have a current, supported release, I'd instantly change the hoster.
intx 2017-01-29 11:14:04
i'm happy with the speed and price I pay :)
bekks 2017-01-29 11:14:22
intx: Are you happy with no support and insecurity, too?
intx 2017-01-29 11:15:01
no, but you get what you pay for :D
bekks 2017-01-29 11:15:23
So maybe you should pay for security and support instead.
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:17:02
hello
reisio 2017-01-29 11:17:21
hi
\9 2017-01-29 11:17:22
FManTropyx: as for preventing random people in, you can install sshguard to make too many failed logins result in being firewalled. it can help keep those annoying chinese login attempts at bay
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:17:29
wireshark shows me that my pc makes connnection to "googlecast_....".. why? I have no open apps or connections
\9 2017-01-29 11:17:51
FManTropyx: you can also harden your configuration, use only newer ciphers. and i'd recommend using a port other than 22 if possible
reisio 2017-01-29 11:18:12
using another port won't help with anything but confusing yourself
viran 2017-01-29 11:18:13
can you explain this: http://pastebin.com/VBatHxhv ? The user ubuntu is in the docker group, the file has rw permission for that group.. yet I cant access it
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:19:10
groundze1o: webbrowsers running?
\9 2017-01-29 11:19:13
FManTropyx: if you want to go even further, iirc newer ssh versions allow you to require a key pair as well as password to log in. so you get two-factor authentication out of the box.
reisio 2017-01-29 11:19:21
viran: 'groups' says you're in the group?
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:19:32
yeah, keys are too complicated
\9 2017-01-29 11:19:43
keys, too complicated?
reisio 2017-01-29 11:19:45
keys won't help security, they're merely a convenience if you hate typing things
viran 2017-01-29 11:19:52
reisio: no... what am I missing?
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:20:03
FManTropyx: ssh root login is disabled on ubuntu per default.
reisio 2017-01-29 11:20:03
viran: it's just your old session; su - sameuser
\9 2017-01-29 11:20:06
reisio: keys keep the attacker from just brute force guessing the password
reisio 2017-01-29 11:20:07
viran: or log out & back in
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:20:11
I don't think I have a firewall
reisio 2017-01-29 11:20:14
\9: nope
viran 2017-01-29 11:20:16
thanks
\9 2017-01-29 11:20:25
FManTropyx: linux has a built-in firewall
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:20:36
FManTropyx: and "keys are too complicated" is just an excuse. like locking your door is too complicated to carry a key with you.
\9 2017-01-29 11:20:36
you can access it with the iptables command
glache 2017-01-29 11:20:49
hi
reisio 2017-01-29 11:21:20
hi glache
glache 2017-01-29 11:21:20
How do I login after registering and exiting and then coming back?
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:21:25
viran: relogin already done?
reisio 2017-01-29 11:21:33
glache: on freenode? /msg nickserv help identify
reisio 2017-01-29 11:21:56
glache: or (better) this: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/hexchat
glache 2017-01-29 11:22:41
ty
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:23:24
k1l_: no browser opened..everything closed..even irc chat client was closed
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:27:17
exit
groundze1o 2017-01-29 11:27:18
exit
glache 2017-01-29 11:30:02
alright
Apachez 2017-01-29 11:30:14

Apachez 2017-01-29 11:36:11

Apachez 2017-01-29 11:36:14
or maybe Im blind
Apachez 2017-01-29 11:36:32
fail to locate how and where to file feature requests (patch provided)
k1l_ 2017-01-29 11:37:55
Apachez: use launchpad.net
FManTropyx 2017-01-29 11:44:29
using a keypair to authenticate is like magic and isn't the key generation process almost 30 steps long?
