whothehellami, /join #regex
ghostlight 2017-01-31 05:46:16
does anyone have any good guides or recos for setting up iptables over network mgr?
whothehellami 2017-01-31 05:46:23
noc_, ok. didnt know that there is a regex channel
ghostlight 2017-01-31 05:46:32
im particularly interested in routing most of my traffic over VPN but not always
noc_ 2017-01-31 05:47:00
PunkUnity420, "files list for package ... missing" suggests problems under /var/lib/dpkg/info
noc_ 2017-01-31 05:47:29
freenode has channels for everything

whothehellami: Alis is an IRC service to help you find channels. For help on using it, see "/msg Alis help list" or ask in #freenode. Example usage: "/msg Alis list http"
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:56:07
annyone help me?
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:56:14
@noc
Pici 2017-01-31 05:56:37
PunkUnity420: how did you upgrade?
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:56:40
noc_: how do i fix that?
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:56:48
do release upgrade -d
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:56:51
Pici:
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:57:27
i dont think i have that file /var/lib/dpkg/info
gio_ 2017-01-31 05:57:45
volo
nacc 2017-01-31 05:57:54
PunkUnity420: it's a directory not a file
noc_ 2017-01-31 05:58:14
PunkUnity420, right, that's the problem. Everything started after tinkering with the package management?
nacc 2017-01-31 05:58:19
PunkUnity420: and if that directory is empty, something rather serious is wrong
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:59:05
well its empty now for sure
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:59:32
i need to just fix this crap lol. ridiculous
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:59:52
pretty sure every time i hacve upgraded ubuntu, something liek this happens
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 05:59:55
since 6.04
Teemo 2017-01-31 06:02:06
yeah I just don't upgrade for that reason. take a full backup and do a nice clean install, then copy the /home directory back (which restores all program settings and user files)
Teemo 2017-01-31 06:02:14
all you need to do after that is install packages really
noc_ 2017-01-31 06:02:23
PunkUnity420, I assume you upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04? have you already reported the bug to the developers?
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:02:34
no
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:02:47
i clean installed 16.04 about a year ago maybe less
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:02:58
then, last night i did, do release upgrade -d
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:03:06
FAILURE
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:03:26
might hop off ubuntu for a bit then. kinda bummed
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:03:59
should be an easy way to go back to stock
noc_ 2017-01-31 06:03:59
so you wanted 16.10? it's a development release. 14.04, 16.04 are long-term supported releases...
Pici 2017-01-31 06:04:00
btw, you shouldn't use -d, that is intended for moving to the development release.
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:04:04
--purge upgrade
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:04:10
--reset ubuntu to factory settings
Pici 2017-01-31 06:04:11
noc_: 16.10 isn't a dev release.
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:04:15
i know
noc_ 2017-01-31 06:04:34
Pici, I thought so. what is a dev release then?
nacc 2017-01-31 06:04:38
iiuc, -d would have moved you to 17.04
Pici 2017-01-31 06:04:54
noc_: 17.04 is the current in-development release. 16.10 is just a regular non-LTS release.
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:05:03
im on yakkety
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:05:07
i used -d
PunkUnity420 2017-01-31 06:05:16
PERIOD
nacc 2017-01-31 06:05:27
noc_: there are no 'development' releases in that sense -- there are LTS and non-LTS and an active (*in* development)
lol768 2017-01-31 06:05:38
Now I can no longer type. I've tried hitting enter and escape to no avail.
nacc 2017-01-31 06:05:48
noc_: where 'active' might be either LTS or non-LTS (once it releases)
lol768 2017-01-31 06:06:03
(I accidentally pressed ctrl shift u to do Unicode input)
nacc 2017-01-31 06:07:42
PunkUnity420: easiest way to 'go back to stock' is to reinstall.
noc_ 2017-01-31 06:08:09
ah, thanks
johan` 2017-01-31 06:08:28
Hi, Im stuck in a terminal (graphical bugs) and I wanna restart without having to press the power button. How do I restart from the terminal?
johan` 2017-01-31 06:08:48
(I did ctrlaltFx to get to here)
lol768 2017-01-31 06:09:01
ah, I fixed it
genii 2017-01-31 06:09:07
johan`: sudo reboot
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:13:23
Trying to to restore unity-greeter after having installed kubuntu, xubuntu and lubuntu (from a ubuntu 16.04.1 install)
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:13:59
Now I get the Lubuntu greeter instead
ghostlight 2017-01-31 06:14:43

super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:20:24

super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:20:27
details:
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:20:56
1. previously had linux backbox and linux mint. adn then deleted those partitions to install kali linux
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:21:44
2. kali didnt start up..so tried to install ubuntu as well..didnt boot too..
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:22:30
super_nugget, did you install grub when installing Kali Linux?
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:22:41
3. tried installing boot-repair disk but it couldnt solve the issue..the system just directly booted into Windows..
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:22:51
jorlin: yes i did =)
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:23:32
i installed it to the harddisk /dev/sdaX not /dev/sdaXY
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:23:42
super_nugget, are you on an (U)EFI system?
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:24:08
jorlin: yes i am..
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:24:53
tried booting from "CSM" mode in BIOS as well..thinking it may have a difference..but none..
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:25:44
the system hidden volume's \EFI folder has no new additions whatsoever..
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:25:55
super_nugget, try creating a bootable USB-stick, formatted as gpt and try to repair boot mgr from there. It should install itself in the ESP (EFI Startup Partition) instead of the root of your /dev/sda
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:25:58
checked it from cmd prompt in Admin mode
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:27:09
owh okay....interesting..how do i format the stick gpt if i may ask...?
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:27:23
i dont understand that part
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:27:36
is it like the fat32 fs?
nacc 2017-01-31 06:28:17
super_nugget: gpt is a partition table format (the other typical one is msdos)
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:28:42
super_nugget, you can grab a USB-stick of 4GB minimum and back-up any useful data that is on it. After that, simply dd the iso image to the stick and start the stick from your EFI boot menu
frib 2017-01-31 06:28:47
all of a sudden my firefox doesn't work. what can I do?
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:28:54
nacc got you..looking it up now..=)
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:30:35
super_nugget, most live-ISO's are setup as dual-mode (MBR/ EFI type). I don't know if that's the case with the Kali ISO, but the Ubuntu Live-ISO should work fine.
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:31:05
jorlin: alright man..and then install it the iso as usual...when prompted for directory of bootloader what should i put...?
tatertots 2017-01-31 06:31:12
super_nugget: did you retain the boot-repair log file?
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:32:04
tatertots: sry man, no i didnt..cuz it said everything was repaired succesfully..
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:32:21
so i just rebooted up
tatertots 2017-01-31 06:32:32
super_nugget: did you retain the boot-repair log file?, i know %99.99 likely you did NOT, but just want to hear you confirm that you didn't keep the repair log,
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:33:21
tatertots: yeah..haha..
frib 2017-01-31 06:33:36
firefox all of a sudden stopped loading pages. tried reinstalling to no avail. please help!
tatertots 2017-01-31 06:33:41
super_nugget: can you open terminal?
jorlin 2017-01-31 06:34:16
super_nugget, gotta logout and in again out to check something for my father. Maybe later. I hope you will be able to solve the issue you are having...
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:34:32
jorlin: thanks a lot bro..see ya..
super_nugget 2017-01-31 06:34:47

tatertots 2017-01-31 06:35:41

tatertots: i have the iso..i could set up the stick in a few..could you hold on?
tatertots 2017-01-31 06:37:18
