liteon23 2017-01-27 03:45:14
could this be policykit related?

^what other types of permissions are given to an admin-user besides group-memberships? (where and how?)
quem 2017-01-27 03:51:29
hello folks. running 16.04 LTS. what's the most convenient way of always having the latest version of btrfs?

hey liteon23 i had a similar permission issue with ftp. i had to create the group and give write access to the user. i think you can use:
PhantomAn0n 2017-01-27 03:58:33
hi all
PhantomAn0n 2017-01-27 03:59:40
quiet here like in most channels :P
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:01:41
PipeItToDevNull, yeah that helped me a "lot", how do I know what to write here: set root='hd0,gpt4,bsd1' ?
PhantomAn0n 2017-01-27 04:02:06
?
PhantomAn0n 2017-01-27 04:02:18
just talk to yourself :P
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:03:23
do you do that often ?
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:03:25
Is there only 1 HDD?
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:03:34
yes, there is only 1 hdd with 6 partitions
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:03:39
3 linux partitions, 3 bsd partitions
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:03:48
all clearly visible here: http://pastebin.com/QsCULZRw
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:03:57
What part number is BSD? I am unsure of how GPT counts partitions though
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:04:17
have you opened the pastebin ?
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:04:26
or your just talking for the sake of talking
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:04:42
Ok so Onepamopa, according to that page sda4 should correspond to gpt4
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:04:54
So just use the same partition #
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:05:02
hd4 ?
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:05:07
gpt4
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:05:07
4,0
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:05:22
grub doesn't see gpt4, it sees sda4
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:05:40
grub sees GPT
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:06:13
okay, testing with root 'gpt4'
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:06:23
That is assuming BSD is on sda4
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:07:05
sda4 is bsd's bootloader
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:07:08
"invalid signature"
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:07:12
trying with gpt5 ..
Speiros 2017-01-27 04:09:59
Hey:)
nicomachus 2017-01-27 04:11:48
hi Speiros
Speiros 2017-01-27 04:12:04
Hi there nicomachus:)
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:13:19
when i go to add a new printer from network, each of our network printers shows up twice, once as "LPD network printer", once as "IPP network printer via DNS-SD), does it matter which I chose?
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:14:14
Use the first
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:14:34
and driver from "gutenprint"?
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:16:48
I do not know about that, if one is needed I get it from the manufacturer
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:18:11
manufacturer offers two drivers for linux, cups or lpr, no lpd or ipp
ppf 2017-01-27 04:18:57
those are different things
ppf 2017-01-27 04:19:25
lpd and ipp are protocols to talk to printers over a network
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:20:09
jnewt: are you in physical possession of the driver from the manufacture? yes or no
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:20:50
tatertots: no, I have not downloaded either of those from the brother website.
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:21:32
jnewt: oh it's a brother?...just install the brother printer linux software
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:22:22
jnewt: don't think about it too hard...it's simple and easy to over think
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:22:33
jnewt: just install the software from bother
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:22:42
tatertots: which software?
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:23:00
there's all kinds of stuff, nothing that just says "brother printer linux software"
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:23:16
jnewt: here i'll do it for you...provide me the make and model number
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:23:59
jnewt: model #
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:24:04
"Driver Install Tool"?
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:24:10
jnewt: yes that
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:24:13
jnewt: install it
jnewt 2017-01-27 04:24:30
HL-2360D, HL-2380DW, and two others are on the network, but I really only need those two
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:25:03
jnewt: just a heads up but not required..do you know the ip address of the brother printer?..if you do not know do not worry about it
ppf 2017-01-27 04:26:06
just use the gutenprint driver ...
dagerik 2017-01-27 04:26:11
im getting Failed to get properties: No such interface '' from systemctl. what does this mean
ppf 2017-01-27 04:26:42
manufacturer driver are figuratively always broken
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:27:46
hmmm brother and HP make linux software for their printers but i digress.....HPLIP isn't broken..it's got a solid reputation and it's mature and been around a long time...but again i digress
Stevvo 2017-01-27 04:28:45
Hi
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:29:04
not here to enter into any urinating contests with any of you guys...just informing a "brother" printer owner that "brother" has linux software
jackNemrod 2017-01-27 04:29:04
Can anyone help me in writing a part of my preseed file? I would like partman take /dev/sda as /boot and /dev/sdb for the LVM (whole disk). I don't understand how to do it
jackNemrod 2017-01-27 04:29:04
It's possible, isn't it?
Stevvo 2017-01-27 04:29:08
How Do I open the configuration menu on xchat-gnome?
Stevvo 2017-01-27 04:29:34
nvm, found it
PipeItToDevNull 2017-01-27 04:29:44
Damn, we are quick
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:29:46
Does anyone know if Ubuntu 16 has the ability to do IPoFC? I bought a QLogic fibre channel card I'd like to use to hook my server upto my switch
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:30:13
alias_neo: check the qlogic documentation for your card
Onepamopa 2017-01-27 04:31:33
By the way, is there a way to encrypt a hdd/ssd via password supplied in the bios, without the need to reenter the password on each boot? In essence - to "lock" the disk to this motherboard. ?
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:31:41
alias_neo: or just post the model# and we'll research it for you
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:31:51
alias_neo: it's not hard to do
Anticom 2017-01-27 04:32:23
Hi all. I'm having an issue with my Ubuntu 16 LTS. I've just installed a windows instance in virtualbox. I wanted the guest additions so i went ahead and installed it. It had to be downloaded first. Now (and also after several reboots) my pc just locks up as soon as i launch the first gui application
Anticom 2017-01-27 04:32:49
I suspect that some .ko might have been installed etc. ? Because the guest addition is supposed to live in in the guest only, right?
Anticom 2017-01-27 04:33:03
Is this a known issue? Or shall i rather head over to #virtualbox?
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:33:30
Anticom: is vt enabled?
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:33:51
Anticom: if you are unsure best head over to #vbox
Anticom 2017-01-27 04:33:59
tatertots: how can i tell? I've switched to another tty so i get at least a shell
Anticom 2017-01-27 04:34:05
but i'm not that much of a linux pro
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:34:39
Anticom: head over to #vbox i'll help you there...you know how easily someone will claim you are off topic
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:34:52
Anticom: so best get out of here now
himcesjf 2017-01-27 04:35:53
/part
himcesjf 2017-01-27 04:35:55
er
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:36:42
tatertots: I have the QLE2462
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:37:04
tatertots: I have got as far as loading the HBA driver and I can see the fc_host device
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:37:36
but my knowledge of fibre is zero so this is a learning exercise, sadly most of the references i can find online are not for ubuntu/debian
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:38:43
alias_neo: according to http://www.qlogic.com/Resources/Documents/DataSheets/Adapters/Datasheet_2400Series_FCAdapter.pdf
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:39:09
alias_neo: it says to go here http://driverdownloads.qlogic.com/QLogicDriverDownloads_UI/Defaultnewsearch.aspx
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:40:17
alias_neo: and that says red hat and sles are supported...officially from the qlogic perspective
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:40:18
tatertots, been there, they have only drivers for windows server, RHEL and solaris :(
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:40:43
alias_neo: so if you want support from the company who made the darn card...that answer is no
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:41:09
tatertots: I wouldn't expect that... I'm a linux user :D
huggybear404 2017-01-27 04:41:46
I get grub-install dummy failed installing to usb disk, is there a way to fix that ?
tatertots 2017-01-27 04:42:22
alias_neo: if you have problems with the card and try to escalate to qlogic and their support guys get wind you're using it in ubuntu...they can officially tell you to go suck an egg
alias_neo 2017-01-27 04:43:17
tatertots: Yeah, I understand, I'm quite happy to do this purely on community support if possible
