hi, ubuntu yakkety, i've accidentally messed up uvcvideo and now it won't load, so my webcam doesn't work. dmesg: http://pastebin.com/raw/f3wGfWef how can I reinstall uvcvideo to fix this?
dspr72 2017-01-30 11:55:43
anyone running ubuntu on a macbook pro retina
genii 2017-01-30 11:57:47
mp68: The uvcvideo.ko file is part of the package linux-image-generic. But depending on HOW you messed it up, reinstalling that might now help. ( like if you made edits to udev scripts for instance which are supposed to detect the camera)

hi
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:00:00
anyone here?
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:02:12
hi
genii 2017-01-30 12:02:20
qwebirc55289: It just happens to be quiet at the moment. If you have an Ubuntu support question, just state it briefly and with some useful information into the channel generally, and someone may help.
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:02:55
thanks genii
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:03:59
this is my problem: Create a file named substandard in your home directory that contains the file names and lines (the data, not the line numbers) in the grades files where students scored less than ten out of a hundred
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:04:09
I have to do it in one command
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:04:22
I just don't know where to start
genii 2017-01-30 12:05:03
Sounds like homework which they want you to accomplish with shell commands, and not really a support question
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:05:23
general question
genii 2017-01-30 12:07:30
qwebirc55289: The basic idea would be to use grep recursively with a regex and redirect with append to this file
qwebirc55289 2017-01-30 12:08:22
thanks genii...
Josh_ 2017-01-30 12:08:33
hey i'm having the could not resolve issue
misternumberone 2017-01-30 12:09:15
genii: mp68 here, thanks, i had both done stuff to the file itself and used udevadm after putting files in /etc/udev/rules.d/, i've now reversed the latter, if i reinstall linux-image-generic should it replace the kernel module with an unmodified one?
Josh_ 2017-01-30 12:09:36
i think it is some problem with namespaces or something but I don;t know what to do]
bazhang 2017-01-30 12:09:56
what version of ubuntu Josh_
Josh_ 2017-01-30 12:10:04

bazhang 2017-01-30 12:10:22
Josh_, you got that when trying to update sources or what
Josh_ 2017-01-30 12:10:39

bazhang 2017-01-30 12:10:59

Josh_ 2017-01-30 12:11:07
what do you mean?
bazhang 2017-01-30 12:11:32
Josh_, try another to server to get the update on
Josh_ 2017-01-30 12:11:42

genii 2017-01-30 12:12:39
misternumberone: Hopefully, yes
k1l 2017-01-30 12:12:53
Josh_: can you run "sudo apt update " and show the output on paste.ubuntu.com ?
bazhang 2017-01-30 12:12:53
Josh_, I'm not sure on how to do that with a server, just desktop, why not ask in #ubuntu-server

genii 2017-01-30 12:13:54
misternumberone: Normally I'd suggest to purge the package before reinstalling, but this is a kernel package so that's a bit dangerous
Rockhopper 2017-01-30 12:15:18
Is there someway to install docear as an application on Ubuntu? I mean I have to launch a shell script now. I want it as an app that can be launched from the launcher for example.
misternumberone 2017-01-30 12:15:45
genii: currently running on the affected kernel so will need to reboot into different one
genii 2017-01-30 12:16:26
mishugashu[m]: The problem is linux-image-generic is for whatever the running kernel is
Rockhopper 2017-01-30 12:18:30
Anyone?

ubottu 2017-01-30 12:20:08
Rockhopper: Package docear does not exist in yakkety
k1l 2017-01-30 12:21:36
Rockhopper: its not in the repos. so you need a 3rd party repo or the install from their webpage.
k1l 2017-01-30 12:22:05
Rockhopper: you can make an own launcher for that program: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UnityLaunchersAndDesktopFiles
k1l 2017-01-30 12:23:15
Rockhopper: according to this https://bugs.launchpad.net/getdeb.net/+bug/1609756 its packaged in the getdeb repo

Rockhopper 2017-01-30 12:26:07
thanks k1l I already found out that getdeb has a package, but getdeb itself has to be installed first. I have no clue how reliable this ´getdeb´ is?!
Rockhopper 2017-01-30 12:30:31
k1l can you confirm it´s any good, do you use it?
k1l 2017-01-30 12:30:49
Rockhopper: i neither use getdeb nor docear
bazhang 2017-01-30 12:31:03
Rockhopper, it's third party , so on your own
Rockhopper 2017-01-30 12:32:22
Okay for the time being I´ll use it from command line then. Thanks
misternumberone 2017-01-30 12:40:33
genii: thanks i reinstalled the kernel it works now
genii 2017-01-30 12:43:05
misternumberone: Glad to be of assistance
