Bashing-om 2017-01-28 18:48:40

cfhowlett: i made a mistake and wrote up a script to add a shit ton of programs for a specific set of uses... now no longer have the script and a shit ton of packages i dont need that are now causing issues with deps on other stuff
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 18:50:44

cfhowlett 2017-01-28 18:55:26
jamie_1, ah. well, I'd say a clean install is in order. download th 16.04.2 .iso, make an install USB, reboot to USB and install the OS to your current partitions. be careful NOT to format your /home
jyo_ 2017-01-28 18:55:36
having been added by dpkg and not apt or apt-get? Is this perhaps working on something older than the packages them selves and thus not problematic?

ubottu 2017-01-28 19:19:42
In an emergency, you may be able to shutdown cleanly and reboot by holding down Alt+PrintScreen and typing slowly, in succession, R, E, I, S, U and B. For an explanation, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:20:34
cfhowlett: with reisub, i wont lose dat?
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:21:11
wwwi, probably you will. then again, your system is locked. choose your options
sirv 2017-01-28 19:22:02
i had to test it .. it works .. the stuff with prnscr
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:22:35
cfhowlett: i mean, with reisub, i will probably lose data?
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:22:52
yes you will probably lose any data you have not already seaved
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:22:56
*saved*
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:23:15
cfhowlett: but will it corrupt my files?
sirv 2017-01-28 19:23:37
wait
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:23:40
correct me if I'm wrong, wwwi: your system is locked?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:23:53
cfhowlett: gui is frozen
sirv 2017-01-28 19:24:10
press CTRL+ALT+F1 .. but wait .. it will switch u to console .... to go back to desktop press then alt+f7
sirv 2017-01-28 19:24:30

amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:25:11
are u using a vrbox
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:25:20
or wubi
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:25:23
wwwi, you have 2 options: hard reboot via holding the power button or reiusb reboot. either way, any data you have not already backed up is going to vanish
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:25:29
under windows
sirv 2017-01-28 19:25:48
cf if he can get into console maybe he can recover somehow
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:26:01
amicrawler, wubi is dead, unsupported and hopelessly broken. please do not encourage its use
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:26:06
sirv, agreed
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:26:13
i was not
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:26:19
amicrawler: vrbox? virtualbox under windows? no. keyboard and mouse are connected with a kvm though, to linux pc
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:26:19
was just asking
sirv 2017-01-28 19:26:51

sirv 2017-01-28 19:27:10
if guy is frozen how u irciing ?
sirv 2017-01-28 19:27:13
gui
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:27:38
just asking
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:27:45
cfhowlett: any unbackuped data is going to vanish? if files are saved, they are not going to vanish, right?
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:28:00
if you were using a virtualbox
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:28:03
sirv: from other pc
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:28:14
or a kvm
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:28:50
wwwi, unless you did something to actually BREAK the OS, not just freeze it, your data should be safe
sirv 2017-01-28 19:29:04
what data we are talking about ?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:29:12
amicrawler: i am not using a virtual box, just this hardware, mthat allows you to use a keyboar and a mouse with two pcs
sirv 2017-01-28 19:29:45
well try to connect keyboard directly to test
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:29:54
have you unplug the kvm on the linux side and replug in ?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:29:58
cfhowlett: ok, so reisub won't corrupt my saved, but open files in my usb stick?
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:30:22
or are you using a vr kvm ?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:30:23
amicrawler: no, should i do that?
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:30:23
wwwi, wait ...
sirv 2017-01-28 19:30:28
i think reisub will also not work for u :)
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:30:47
wwwi, are you booted to a natively installed ubuntu or did you boot an ubuntu USB?
Snert__ 2017-01-28 19:30:53
is it true that Ubuntu now has ads in it?
sirv 2017-01-28 19:30:53
your bproblem is between the keyboard and the chair
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:31:20
cfhowlett: natively installed ubuntu
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:31:27
wwwi, so unplug the usb
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:31:37
PEBKAC
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:31:48
cfhowlett: why?
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:32:22
you asked about USB data. Unplug USB.
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:32:22
unless it is booting off the usb as alive boot
sirv 2017-01-28 19:32:29
can u ssh or telnet to the machine ?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:32:59
cfhowlett: if i unplug the usb, what happens?
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:33:11
wwwi, to the computer? nothing
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:33:34
cfhowlett: if i unplug the usb, the data is safer?
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 19:33:58
wwwi, the data already written to usb is safe. data NOT written is a lost cause
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:35:22
cfhowlett: ok, but then why should i unplug the usb?
sirv 2017-01-28 19:35:59
so u have data safe in your hand
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:36:05
are you trying to save the chrome info ?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:36:34
amicrawler: no, i just want the data in the usb stick
amicrawler 2017-01-28 19:37:24
were you saving something in the middle of the gui locking up on you
sirv 2017-01-28 19:37:28
ffs, just unplug the usb and reboot and let us know if any data was saved
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:37:50
amicrawler: i dont think so
sirv 2017-01-28 19:38:13
what were u doing when the gui locked up ?
wwwi 2017-01-28 19:38:21
sirv: why i need to unplug the usb stick, before i reboot?
sirv 2017-01-28 19:38:49
wwwi > to have data save in hand ...like to be sure ... better to have usb stick in hand then plugged in
sirv 2017-01-28 19:39:06
in that way nothing will affect it
ThePotato456 2017-01-28 19:39:10
