I played a good computer joke on my husband in 1980, he retells it still to his friends.
ducasse 2017-01-28 20:49:17
wwwi: there's only virtual consoles, ssh (if installed, it's not by default on 16.04+ desktop installs), ctrl+alt+backspace (if enabled, it's not by default). if none of those work, sysrq+reisub is actually your safest bet.
wwwi 2017-01-28 20:50:15
ducasse: ok
wwwi 2017-01-28 20:50:32

ducasse 2017-01-28 20:50:59

Fraggleeeleee 2017-01-28 20:51:49
Thankyou.
Fraggleeeleee 2017-01-28 20:52:12
why does it start at 4.10?
wafflejock 2017-01-28 20:52:16
Fraggleeeleee, the version numbers are based on the year and month of release 16.04 is 2016 April (04)
Flannel 2017-01-28 20:52:38
Fraggleeeleee: Ubuntu releases are year.month. October of 2004 was the first release.
Fraggleeeleee 2017-01-28 20:52:38

Fraggleeeleee 2017-01-28 20:52:55

SinkingShip9 2017-01-28 20:59:34
when is the name usually announced?
wafflejock 2017-01-28 20:59:40
SinkingShip9, every 6 months until plans change (if they do) there is a new "release" new LTS every 2 years
Lennon^_^ 2017-01-28 21:00:21
Waves to the guys, ty.
SinkingShip9 2017-01-28 21:01:08
well given that Z is the last letter of the English alphabet..i can't wait to see what will the name be heh
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:01:26
every april and october there's a release seems like they just pick names once the next version starts but not sure the process aside from the general rules, I assume they'll wrap around with the letters back to AA but not sure
SinkingShip9 2017-01-28 21:02:15
who's they? who decides the name? i would think there would be a voting contest or something
SinkingShip9 2017-01-28 21:02:40
on a second thought we don't need ubuntu mcubuntuface name
cfhowlett 2017-01-28 21:03:26
mark shuttleworth decides the name - no contest
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:03:35

I am having an issue with firefox. It seems that web pages load but don't display. I can go to google.com or reddit.com and the page stays blank. But I can tell the page is loaded because I can click on the page and new pages will load as if i had clicked on a link on the page.
dreki 2017-01-28 21:23:57
I cleared cache and stuff but nothing seems to help.
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:24:46
dreki, sounds like some sort of rendering problem have you tried right clicking and inspecting the page to see if pulling up the console/inspector view makes it draw the page?
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:24:55
dreki, also is it a new issue or been this way from the start?
dreki 2017-01-28 21:25:25
wafflejock: no it just started when I ran apt upgrade
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:25:29
dreki, F12 should also pull up the dev tools I'm pretty sure
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:25:39
in the browser I mean
dreki 2017-01-28 21:26:05
I can see the html for the page in the dev tools but still cant see the page
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:26:09
dreki, hmm maybe you can see if there is some hardware acceleration that got turned on during the upgrade or something like that could be messing it up
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:26:31
within firefox settings I mean, I know I've manually enabled that for some webgl stuff
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:27:38
should be in options->advanced "User hardware acceleration when available"
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:27:47
Use*
dreki 2017-01-28 21:28:15
I think I've always had that on. I tried turning it off and restarting firefox just now and it didn't help
adymitruk 2017-01-28 21:28:38
How can I get colour emojis in the terminal?
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:28:54
hrm yeah in that case dunno maybe try launching firefox from a terminal and see if there's any output with errors in the terminal that might lead to something
wafflejock 2017-01-28 21:29:02
dreki, ^^
Scriptchord 2017-01-28 21:29:05
Hi
dreki 2017-01-28 21:29:11
wafflejock: thanks I'll try that
ducasse 2017-01-28 21:29:55
dreki: there is a known bug about this problem, you can find it on launchpad if you search.
Guest58803 2017-01-28 21:31:59

dreki 2017-01-28 21:32:01
