#ubuntu channel featuring lol768, ngochai, ZeptoByte, nicomachus, dannyLopez, scottjl, and 20 others.

k1l 2017-02-28 08:45:16
this is a basic concept of ubuntu.
OerHeks 2017-02-28 08:45:37
genius hack, that is.
andreas_ 2017-02-28 08:46:17

ppedro 2017-02-28 08:48:45

ppedro 2017-02-28 08:48:59
thanks love
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:49:11
i wast just apeing the fellow who spammed here before :P
OerHeks 2017-02-28 08:49:14
ppedro, don't make fun of lonely people.
OerHeks 2017-02-28 08:49:17
:-D
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:49:22
:D
OerHeks 2017-02-28 08:49:26
lets move on with support.
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:49:29
you are right, sorry
ubuntly 2017-02-28 08:50:38
now I decided to user "superuser" instead "suser" - it looks better
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:51:11
seems like youre solving some big problems
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 08:51:19
it's not as if he called some one else by that pc-incorrect word
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:53:18
I am not so experienced with Unix, but I find it silly to disable root and just have sudo ;i
k1l 2017-02-28 08:54:14
ppedro: even windows made something similar with their admin setup. its not a silly approach
nicomachus 2017-02-28 08:54:20
ppedro: commentary not necessary.
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:54:31
:D thanks k1l and nicomachus
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:54:36
It was more a conversation opener
Th3_ghost 2017-02-28 08:54:37
ppedro: is not silly, it is for security
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:54:54
Th3_ghost: security in what sense?
scottjl 2017-02-28 08:54:56
ppedro: it's to foster better security habits. one should avoid logging directly in as root if possible.
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:54:59
also, this channel isn't for conversation. That would be #ubuntu-discuss
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:55:27
I mean, if you have a root account (with the same password) and a sudo account (<- with the same password), what is the gain in security?
ppedro 2017-02-28 08:55:45
tgm4883: ah, the hierarchy has beaten me, bye bye.
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 08:56:26
Can help me with a DB problem?
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:56:41
dannyLopez: not unless you tell us the problem...
Th3_ghost 2017-02-28 08:56:52
ppedro: to protect yourself running scripts that can destroy your system or do rm -rf /
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:57:27
Th3_ghost: he's gone
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 08:57:38
Jajaja tgm4883 I think the support is only in Ubuntu. :O
scottjl 2017-02-28 08:57:44
tgm: can't discuss in here but can solve database issues?
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:58:03
scottjl: well this is a support channel...
Th3_ghost 2017-02-28 08:58:07
so what can we do here?
Toggi3 2017-02-28 08:58:39
Ubuntu, because some of us live in a Debian world and want long term releases, and either don't have the luxury of using, or do not wish to use, red hat and co. ;p
Toggi3 2017-02-28 08:58:46
though Debian has an LTS channel now right?
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:58:53
Toggi3: off topic
Toggi3 2017-02-28 08:58:55
I wonder how that is to actually run in enterprise
Toggi3 2017-02-28 08:59:10
no general discussion?
nacc 2017-02-28 08:59:27
Toggi3: no
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:59:29
Toggi3: there's a discussion channel for that
tgm4883 2017-02-28 08:59:31
!ot
ubottu 2017-02-28 08:59:31
#ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please register with NickServ (see /msg ubottu !register) and use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks!
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 08:59:36
Estoy instalando dhis2 y hay una línea que dice: "createuser -SDRP dhis" cuando pongo la contraseña me dice que el rol dhis ya existe. ¿Cómo puedo eliminar ese rol?
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 08:59:44
I am installing dhis2 and there is a line that says: "createuser -SDRP dhis" when I put the password tells me that the dhis role already exists. How can I remove this role?
Toggi3 2017-02-28 08:59:58
appreciate it tgm4883
unstablevet 2017-02-28 09:00:09
can anyone help with hp webcam issues?
genii 2017-02-28 09:00:18
Th3_ghost, Toggi3 This channel's purpose is to assist Ubunt users who are having technical support issues. As tgm4883 indicates, we have an offtopic channel for non-support discussion
Th3_ghost 2017-02-28 09:00:43
genii: okay :)
tgm4883 2017-02-28 09:02:35
dannyLopez: you'll probably have to reach out to the DHIS2 people for that since it's a unique package that not a lot of people run, and it's not even in the repositories
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 09:03:08
But the comand is not of the program.
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:03:12
hi
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:03:36
My hoster only offers Ubuntu 14.04 ISO - can I easily upgrade to 16.04? Fresh installation, so there is not much to be migrated?
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 09:04:26
I mean, exist any way to delet a rol created whit createuser -SDRP dhis
tgm4883 2017-02-28 09:04:34
dannyLopez: ah it's a postgres db command
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:05:26
When I upgrade a fresh 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS, there won't be a performance penalty because the apt package manager handles all this usually perfectly?
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:06:34
ubuntly: a 14.04->16.04 upgrade is not equal to a fresh 16.04 install. but it's close.
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:07:22
scottjl: why not equal? what will be different? more clutter?
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:07:32
yes
genii 2017-02-28 09:07:41
ubuntly: If you have many PPAs it can be a pain, depending on what they are
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:07:50
but there is nothing wrong with running a 14.04 lts install right now.
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:08:05
genii: he said a fresh install
genii 2017-02-28 09:09:03
scottjl: Ah, missed that :)
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:09:23
ubuntly: you have about 2 more years of support for 14.04 lts.
genii 2017-02-28 09:09:50
ubuntly: Fresh install 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS upgrade rarely gives problems
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:10:54
I see
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:11:11
ok, I found my hoster also offers a minimal image with 16.04 - it is not a clean install but it will only contain minimal packages
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:11:13
that's what I want
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:11:33
otherwise the ansible provisioning will fail because there are already packages in place that can't be just removed
mario__ 2017-02-28 09:12:17
Hello, can I ask a question of Ubuntu? I'm a new user..
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:12:42
hi mario__, shoot!
genii 2017-02-28 09:12:45
mario__: Yes, just state your question and someone should reply
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:13:30
so Ubuntu Landscape offers kernel upgrading without restart, right? Among some other auto upgrade stuff?
mario__ 2017-02-28 09:13:34
Maybe this question has been asked a lot, I'm learning now. I have an old netbook with An ATOM processor, 1GB of RAM, and I am trying to guess which version of Linux or Ubuntu is better to install on this device
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:13:58
ubuntly, yes, live patching, but the kernel only
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:14:37
OerHeks: and this live patching costs money at some scale because the Landscape team has to prepare the normal Linux kernel upgrade for a live upgrade?
mario__ 2017-02-28 09:14:38
I am thinking on MATE, but I'm not sure if it's the best option. Thanks in advance.
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:14:42
mario__, xubuntu/mate or lightweight Lubuntu/openbox
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:14:53
OerHeks: or is there some proprietary, non opensource tech involved?
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:16:05
>> Why does Landscape service cost? Could one prepare the linux kernel upgrades also with an opensource tool (also taking the risks ofc)?
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:16:24
ubuntly, yes, it is a canonical prop thingy, Dustin wrote a nice Q&A http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2016/10/canonical-livepatch.html
mario__ 2017-02-28 09:16:28
I will try xubuntu/mate then, thank you a lot guys :)
lol768 2017-02-28 09:16:36
I'm pretty sure it just uses kpatch
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:16:40
see "Q: How does this compare to Oracle Ksplice, RHEL Live Patching and SUSE Live Patching?"
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:16:47
and there are no OpenSource LivePatches now? :)
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:17:07
kslice, but unsupported AFAIK
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:17:20
I see
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:17:30
probably too much to invest for a truly opensource solution
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:17:37
maybe when the kernel team itself decides to make one?
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 09:17:37
tgm4883: Yes, is a postgres db
stratocastorNM 2017-02-28 09:19:55
Hello everybody!
ZeptoByte 2017-02-28 09:22:42
Hello :) I really need help getting grub2 to work again.. Can someone help me?
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:24:54
ZeptoByte, what's wrong with your grub?
ZeptoByte 2017-02-28 09:26:10
I moved the ubuntu partition to make it bigger, and now grub wont start.. And I have deleted all of the content of the /boot folder
shazzr 2017-02-28 09:26:47
Weird thing....if I use debian on my laptop it starts much faster than if I use ubuntu. How can I check what takes so much time?
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:26:47
how are you chatting here?
k1l 2017-02-28 09:27:16
ubuntly: the service used for the kernel upgrades is livepatching. and yes you can do it on your own if you want. but 3 machines are for free from canonical service
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:27:20
shazzr, run systemd-analyze blame
k1l 2017-02-28 09:27:39
ubuntly: http://blog.dustinkirkland.com/2016/10/canonical-livepatch.html
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:29:28
ZeptoByte: You've pretty much hosed your system deleting /boot
shazzr 2017-02-28 09:29:28
diogenes_: apparmor.service, 21.8 s, and plymouth-read-write.service, 21.7 s. Can I disable them in any way?
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:30:02
shazzr, first google and read the documentation
ubuntly 2017-02-28 09:30:08
k1l: three for free? cool! I guess even for commercial use, etc - great!
ZeptoByte 2017-02-28 09:30:35
@scottjl, I can't somehow reinstall it from a live usb?
OerHeks 2017-02-28 09:30:45
ubuntulog2, actually, if you are a developer with ubuntu, contact them ;-)
k1l 2017-02-28 09:31:23
ubuntly: see that blogpost with that faq
ngochai 2017-02-28 09:32:05
hi guys, how do I disable console on framebuffer device and keep the framebuffer device (/dev/fb*)
scottjl 2017-02-28 09:32:09
ZeptoBte: You can but it wouldn't be an easy process. Unless you needed that exact install, better off booting from live, backing up data, and reinstalling.
dannyLopez 2017-02-28 09:32:22
OerHeks: Im not dev, Im a simple user and just follow a tutorial
anddam 2017-02-28 09:32:32
while creating a backup using the Backup panel in System Settings I get a "Backup Failed - Permission denied"
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:32:43
ZeptoByte, http://pastebin.com/WxequHSj
stratocastorNM 2017-02-28 09:32:50
Anyone here install folding at home on Ubuntu?
anddam 2017-02-28 09:33:50
I used a SSH storage location, specifying the server, the folder and the username (same as my user on this system)
ZeptoByte 2017-02-28 09:33:53
Thank you @diogenes, I will try that
anddam 2017-02-28 09:34:00
where can I read a more detailed log of what's failing?
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:34:05
ZeptoByte, good luck
ZeptoByte 2017-02-28 09:40:08
diognes_, it didn't work.. I've posted the output here http://pastebin.com/vptnfckQ
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:41:31
ZeptoByte, you're in trouble, reinstalling is way to gpo
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:41:33
go*
ZeptoByte 2017-02-28 09:42:15
Okay, but thank you diogens_ for the help :)
diogenes_ 2017-02-28 09:42:26
ZeptoByte, you're welcome
pavlos 2017-02-28 09:43:53
ZeptoByte, would this help? ... http://askubuntu.com/questions/831216/reinstalling-grub2-efi-partition
Apachez 2017-02-28 09:44:13
inte ubuntu, is there a "good" way to run a specific command AFTER user logged into the gui AND network is up and running?
