did ubuntu remove chromium from the software center recently?
reisio 2017-02-28 13:53:00

bazhang 2017-02-28 13:53:01
!info chromium-browser
ubottu 2017-02-28 13:53:04
chromium-browser (source: chromium-browser): Chromium web browser, open-source version of Chrome. In component universe, is optional. Version 55.0.2883.87-0ubuntu1.16.10.1330 (yakkety), package size 58374 kB, installed size 225463 kB
bazhang 2017-02-28 13:53:10

hillCownTree 2017-02-28 13:54:19
strange, was not showing up on a new install after update && upgrade
hillCownTree 2017-02-28 13:54:48
persisted after rebooty
Bashing-om 2017-02-28 13:56:24
hillCownTree: universe repo enabled ?
hillCownTree 2017-02-28 13:57:08
system is all defaults so I would assume universe was caught. I just sent the system to reboot and it showed up again
hillCownTree 2017-02-28 13:57:23
strange that it was not availabe from the start
mikeymop 2017-02-28 13:59:36
will apt-purge apache reset all the directories in root I mucked up
mikeymop 2017-02-28 13:59:52
or do i have to manually remove them
compact 2017-02-28 14:00:42
hi. i have vsftpd, working fine. i enabled SSL however clients not using SSL cannot login anymore
compact 2017-02-28 14:00:43
any idea?
luisf 2017-02-28 14:20:44
hi
donofrio 2017-02-28 14:20:54
what's the package to install a full gui xfce desktop from apt-get thought it was one master packge for the whole show?
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:22:06
donofrio, sudo apt install xfce4
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:22:20
DE only
donofrio 2017-02-28 14:22:56
what about all the 'other' packages that make a full desktop experence?
OerHeks 2017-02-28 14:23:34
xubuntu-desktop
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:23:35
so what you actually want is the xubuntu metapackage: sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop
Bashing-om 2017-02-28 14:24:26

nacc: Re-flashed it. Now's the time to re-add everything relevant. I'm going to consider this practice for a future sysadmin job ;)

mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:31:29
this failed me
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:32:12
dpkg -r couldn't remove the package either so I couldn't do that to get it to become an installation candidate again
nacc 2017-02-28 14:33:10
!ubuwin | donofrio
ubottu 2017-02-28 14:33:10
donofrio: Canonical and Microsoft have announced that Windows 10 will be able to run Ubuntu programs without needing porting/recompilation. This functionality is still in beta and is not supported in #ubuntu. For discussion and support, see #ubuntu-on-windows.
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:34:00
so I took a dd copy of an install of ubuntu 14.04 before updating to 16.04...16.04 is all jacked up, what's the easiest way to revert to that dd copy? boot to a cd and dd it back onto the drive?
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:34:05
(I think that's the only way?)
reisio 2017-02-28 14:34:31
jon__: that's the "simplest" way, yes
reisio 2017-02-28 14:34:56
but since you clearly have time on your hands to allow the system to be unproductive, I'd say figuring out how to make 16 work is a better us of that time
reisio 2017-02-28 14:34:59
better use*
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:35:15
I think the issue is that dell mucked with 14 a bit too much
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:35:34
and then updating to 16 got me stuck on drivers, etc, that don't update because their repo was disabled by the update
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:35:41
jon__, are you using the standard ubuntu or the dell image?
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:35:46
the dell image
donofrio 2017-02-28 14:35:47
nacc, that channel doesn't exist on freenode
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:36:04
I wonder if I would have better luck with a vanilla 16.04 install
reisio 2017-02-28 14:36:05
jon__: that was your mistake
reisio 2017-02-28 14:36:08
yes you would
nacc 2017-02-28 14:36:10
donofrio: uh, yes it does
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:36:11
jon__, standard image works fine on most Dell's.
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:36:22
there's a lot of potential for driver nightmares
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:36:33
it has one of those wacky video cards that switches on and off, and a usb-c dock
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:36:52
and yet it takes only moments to test this for yourself ...
donofrio 2017-02-28 14:37:24
nacc, you should put a space before the period, throws off the hyperlink - lol
nacc 2017-02-28 14:37:44
donofrio: sounds like a bug in your IRC client
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:37:45
I honestly have no idea how to resolve the issues with 16.04 short of reinstalling -- the machine randomly hard freezes, particularly when attaching and removing display devices (though sometimes just on its own)
nacc 2017-02-28 14:38:07
donofrio: as channel names aren't hyperlinks, that's something your client is interpreting.
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:38:19
get 16.04.2, make a bootable USB, boot it up. if all works, install.
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:39:18
you think that I might have substantially better luck with that vs the upgraded copy? ie. this is not a waste of time
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:39:31
it'd be nice if Dell said exactly what they did >_<
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 14:39:50
I think it's worth the few minutes of your valuable time to conduct this experiment. do it for science.
jon__ 2017-02-28 14:40:44
the lack of support from dell has been kind of frustrating for a "supported" laptop, but I'll give this a shot
donofrio 2017-02-28 14:41:04
nacc, probably I'm using hexchat from xfce on cygwin64 on win7
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:42:17
i took it down to see if that helped
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:42:22
can someone help me out of dependency hell
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:42:27
or whatever i did to apt
nacc 2017-02-28 14:43:45
mikeymop: yes
nacc 2017-02-28 14:43:49
mikeymop: what did you do?
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:43:59
was trying to get wordpress installed
nacc 2017-02-28 14:44:04
mikeymop: `apt install wordpress`?
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:44:06
messed around with apache
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:44:15
i did it from wordpress-latest.tar
nacc 2017-02-28 14:44:18
sight
nacc 2017-02-28 14:44:20
*sigh
nacc 2017-02-28 14:44:22
mikeymop: why??
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:44:30
anyway, in playing around in manually installed libapache2-mod-php7.0
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:44:44
nacc: online tutorial
nacc 2017-02-28 14:44:45
mikeymop: not a great reason, but ok
Oderus 2017-02-28 14:44:46
hey. having issues installing a package. anyone able to tell me the issue? https://paste.ubuntu.com/24087512/
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:44:54
figure it was best practice since it was bleeding edge
nacc 2017-02-28 14:44:54
mikeymop: ok, so you installed the php7.0 module for apache
nacc 2017-02-28 14:45:00
mikeymop: only if you know what you're doing.
mikeymop 2017-02-28 14:45:02
but id didn't use hte metapackage
