j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:45:08
it will work for sure
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:45:24
it was some kind of update that messed this up
nacc 2017-02-22 10:45:28
j4f-shredder__: just do it, please.
darsparx 2017-02-22 10:45:28
can anyone help me? I'm trying to use quassel on server and can't seem to connect on the external IP for it....
lerner 2017-02-22 10:45:34
what do I have to add to a command so instead of following proxy instructions it connects directly to internet?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:45:34
I am
nacc 2017-02-22 10:45:54
lerner: maybe specify no_proxy= ?
nacc 2017-02-22 10:46:02

TheM4st3r 2017-02-22 10:46:12
Hi
nacc 2017-02-22 10:46:19

j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:48:47
in the future, can you avoid getting updates on the kernel?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:48:53
I would like to freeze the version
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:49:08
I couldnt care less about the extra features, I just use it for minimal stuff
k1l 2017-02-22 10:49:09
darsparx: if you are behind a router you need to forward the needed ports to that machine.
TheM4st3r 2017-02-22 10:49:10
No.
nacc 2017-02-22 10:49:10
j4f-shredder__: that is not necessarily recommended, e.g. you want security updates
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:49:24
I dont care about security, I just need to be up and running
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:49:29
I dont have anything important
k1l 2017-02-22 10:49:40
j4f-shredder__: no, that doesnt make sense. there was something more wrong on your system.
darsparx 2017-02-22 10:49:44
k1l: I don't think I am, the server is connected over a powerline adapter
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:49:47
I cant lose one day of my life, I have to work
nacc 2017-02-22 10:50:05
j4f-shredder__: then *why* are you running 16.10?
nacc 2017-02-22 10:50:08
j4f-shredder__: stay on 16.04
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:50:17
Maybe I will
TheM4st3r 2017-02-22 10:50:22
You're a books about penetration tests? I'm curious for this.
yobagme_ 2017-02-22 10:50:44
Agree with nacc. I personally stay on the LTS releases unless absolutely necessary
nacc 2017-02-22 10:50:47
TheM4st3r: this is the ubuntu support channel, as i just had ubottu tell you.
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:51:23
I will wipe out windows as well, I hate that
nacc 2017-02-22 10:51:31
j4f-shredder__: it's not unheard of for kernel updates to regress things, because hardware is finicky. Usually a bug filed will get it fixed. Or, if you were to boot the most current 16.10 kernel, it's fixed there, and you just need to update your system from the live usb.
TheM4st3r 2017-02-22 10:51:35

TheNH813 2017-02-22 10:52:50
How do I remove additional data downloads from apt?
darsparx 2017-02-22 10:53:01
k1l: I mean I guess it's going through our home modem/router combo but I've never done something like this before and trying to get it up and running
TheNH813 2017-02-22 10:53:16

I am getting `su: User not known to the underlying authentication module` when trying to startup fetchmail
yobagme_ 2017-02-22 10:54:13
j4f-shredder__: Ubuntu is actually plenty stable. Wifi on Linux can be a PITA unless you're using tried and true intel chipset-based devices.
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:54:13
this has been working fine for years
nacc 2017-02-22 10:54:19
TheM4st3r: which application? you might need to purge it
k1l 2017-02-22 10:54:20
darsparx: if you want one internal machine to be reached behind a router, you need to forward the ports on the router. its like sending a mail just to a adress without naming the house number. the postman doesnt know which house to give it to.
genii 2017-02-22 10:54:26
weaksauce: Use sudo -i instead
TheNH813 2017-02-22 10:54:30
weaksauce: USe sudo.
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:54:53
I am running /etc/init.d/fetchmail start
darsparx 2017-02-22 10:55:02
k1l: then how do I do that? I'm still trying to learn this since I'm trying to manage a home server for this >_>
TheNH813 2017-02-22 10:55:16
Then type /etc/init.d/fetchmail start
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:55:35
k1l it's fairly old
genii 2017-02-22 10:55:37
weaksauce: Instead of running scripts in /etc/init or /etc/init.d use instead service. Like sudo service servicename start
TheNH813 2017-02-22 10:55:39
"sudo -i" will get you a root terminal.
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:55:49
ok
k1l 2017-02-22 10:56:03
weaksauce: ? details matter. since different ubuntu use different init systems
bekks 2017-02-22 10:56:09
weaksauce: sudo /etc/init.d/fetchmail start
TheNH813 2017-02-22 10:56:12
Oh yeah, "sudo service fetchmail start" should also work if it's in init.d.
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:56:15
what's the way to check k1l
k1l 2017-02-22 10:56:24
weaksauce: lsb_release -sd
genii 2017-02-22 10:56:33
bekks: But then what happens if there's already an upstart instance from /etc/init running?
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:56:43
10.04.4 lts k1l
bekks 2017-02-22 10:56:53
genii: Never tried it.
k1l 2017-02-22 10:56:55

j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:57:08

Fetchmail is being rude. Did you not setup accounts?
k1l 2017-02-22 10:58:19
darsparx: there you need to forward the ports for quassel to the internal ip from your homeserver.
weaksauce 2017-02-22 10:58:23
TheNH813 yes, this has been working for years fine
quesker 2017-02-22 10:58:46

\9 2017-02-22 11:06:33
maybe they used the dirty c0w exploit
OerHeks 2017-02-22 11:06:33
weaksauce, you won't get serious support on that, backup and reinstall a supported ubuntu.
quesker 2017-02-22 11:06:45
sorry but I agree with that
k1l 2017-02-22 11:06:52

weaksauce 2017-02-22 11:07:16
I assume it's been hacked as zimbra shouldn't have any business in there
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:07:44

Zythyr 2017-02-22 11:08:10
Hi. I am installing Ubuntu 16 on a thin client desktop SSD. This desktop as onl 2GB RAM. Would adding a SWAP space help improve the speed? HOw much space should I allocate for SWAP?
bekks 2017-02-22 11:08:26
Zythyr: No.
bekks 2017-02-22 11:08:52
Zythyr: And allocate as much swap as your physical RAM, if you want to use suspend to disk.
\9 2017-02-22 11:08:53
Zythyr: swap space does not improve speed, it adds "emergency memory" in case you run out of RAM
k1l 2017-02-22 11:09:09
Zythyr: swap is slower than ram. it will not improve speed. it will just keep the system going and not kill apps to free ram again.
Zythyr 2017-02-22 11:09:38
Ohhh okay so its only for emergency
Zythyr 2017-02-22 11:10:07
Because its a SSD drive, isn't it possible to use the SWAP as a way to extend RAM?
k1l 2017-02-22 11:10:12
dannyLpz: its either ~/.local/share/applications or /usr/share/applications where the .desktop files are

k1l 2017-02-22 11:10:28
Zythyr: even ssds are a lot slower than ram.
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:10:30
This pops up every few hours.
\9 2017-02-22 11:10:32
Zythyr: even SSD speeds pale in comparison to RAM
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:10:53
Bashing-om: 3.13.0-101-generic
k1l 2017-02-22 11:10:58
Zythyr: you can only add more ram if you want to maintain speed while using more ram.
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:11:03
I even used ppa-purge to remove everything, yet it's still there.
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:11:14

Zythyr 2017-02-22 11:12:00
I read online that SWAP parititon should be 2x the physical RAM. WHat if I do larger swap space? Is it hurtful?
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:12:09
im about to do it Bashing-om . just checking something
k1l 2017-02-22 11:12:13
TheNH813: even after reboot?
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:12:23
Yup.
\9 2017-02-22 11:12:24
Zythyr: using larger swap than that is just waste

Anyone got any tips for adjust mousewheel scroll speed? I've tried imwheel without noticable effect (no noticeable difference between 1 and 3, set it to 100 just to see if it was working - It was!;)
yobagme_ 2017-02-22 11:12:35
Zythyr: Its not harmful, but you're wasting space
k1l 2017-02-22 11:12:57
Zythyr: that is an old myth, same size as ram due to using suspend.
Zythyr 2017-02-22 11:13:03
Ohhh okay. Thank you. I have plenty of space on the SSD. Now I can partition accordinaly
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:13:16
Bashing-om: how come the command is only for headers? what about image, and signed-image
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:13:30
Bashing-om: and also image-extra

k1l: well I obviously don't know what I'm doing, I just did the port forwarding on the router and still can't get connected >_<

NVidia drivers... again. But this driver (305 from their web site) installed and came up with only one problem: It's a two screen system.. and it's got the displays swapped.

where is pam configured?
MarkB2 2017-02-22 11:16:25
I've tried System Settings --> Display and moving swapping the position. Applied.. and both displays flash for a bit.. then there's a couple of corrupted screens. I can regain control by turning off lightdm.. but has anyone a solution for swapping left-for-right?
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:16:49
how could i add ~/bin to path?
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:16:52
or any folder
arasbm 2017-02-22 11:17:00
I am running into a very strange touch ghosting problem with a brand new spin5 laptop. If anyone wants to help me here, let me know: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1667133

Launchpad bug 1667133 in xorg (Ubuntu) "touch is constantly jumping around" [Undecided,New]
MarkB2 2017-02-22 11:17:32
icyjug: From the command line: $ export PATH=path_to_your_bin_directory:${PATH}
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:17:34
Bashing-om: i have /lib/modules/3.13.0-whatever-generic/misc/vmmon.ko and /lib/modules/3.13.0-whatever-generic/misc/vmnet.ko files for each of those dirs. i think these are vmware workstation related

k1l: http://pastebin.com/t9gLqQZv
\9 2017-02-22 11:17:51
icyjug: create a file called .bash_aliases if one doesn't exist, and add to it: export PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
\9 2017-02-22 11:17:59
icyjug: then source ~/.bashrc
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:18:00
MarkB2: will this preserve the old paths?
MarkB2 2017-02-22 11:18:30
icyjug: It will... but would need to be done for each shell. \9's solution is better.
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 11:19:06
azizLIGHT: Package manager can not deal with old /lib/modules/3.XXX, and neither can I . Any reason why we can not remove these old old files ?
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:19:37
\9 i didnt understand the source ~/.bashrc part sorry :(
\9 2017-02-22 11:19:53
icyjug: it's just to make it take effect in the current shell
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:20:07
Bashing-om: why cant we just leave them be
k1l 2017-02-22 11:20:14
icyjug: if you create the bin folder in your home, then just relogin
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:20:16
what if i need them lol
\9 2017-02-22 11:20:20
icyjug: "source" is a bash command that makes bash read a file as a series of commands as if they were input, and "~/.bashrc" is the local settings file
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:20:23
ah ok it is a command to update things
pavlos 2017-02-22 11:20:30
icyjug, pop another term and type, echo $PATH ... you will see the ~/bin
\9 2017-02-22 11:20:35
icyjug: you can just restart the terminal instead if you want
k1l 2017-02-22 11:21:06
dannyLpz: look into the nautulis files. the org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop file, if there is the wrong path.
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:21:38
pavlos so nice :D
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:22:30
\9 what about the .bash_aliases file, do i have to add it anywhere?
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 11:22:40
azizLIGHT: Well . while you can leave them it breaks the package manager . and with them left in place I do not know how to deal with it either . Broke bad enough as is . and I can anticipate breaking the package manager even more before we can fix it .
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:22:50
maybe a reference in the .bashrc?
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:23:04
oh
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 11:23:14
maybe we stop lol
pavlos 2017-02-22 11:23:53
icyjug, .bashrc will look for .bash_aliases and if present, it will source it
icyjug 2017-02-22 11:24:24
pavlos oh well..

TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:26:25
Well, I went through my sources and imported apt keys and removed the things I don't need, then erased everything in /var/cache/apt, and ran apt-get update (yes, I backed the folder up first). So far, the message hasn't appeared. I'm gonna try logging out and back in to see if it appears now.
dannyLpz 2017-02-22 11:27:15
BTW, Nautilus don save the changes, I mean, if I configure view type list, in the next start, show name list.

tangled_z: Oh, and if the networking service isn't loaded, you might also need "sudo service networking start"
Guest53518 2017-02-22 11:38:36
Hello
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:38:38
tnagled_z: And also, if the first part of the commadn dosent work, try "sudo dhcpd&" instead of "sudo service dhcpd start"
Guest53518 2017-02-22 11:38:42
I need some help please
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:38:51
What do you need help with?
k1l 2017-02-22 11:38:52
pascal_: "apt policy screen"
tangled_z 2017-02-22 11:39:12
TheNH813: thanks! I was stuck on the first part, it was telling me that the service is not found
Guest53518 2017-02-22 11:39:13
I have a chromebook and i installed kde with crouton
LooCfur_ 2017-02-22 11:39:21
k1l, I was about to tell him apt-get install screen, but I haven't used ubuntu in ages. It's not that simple anymore?
Guest53518 2017-02-22 11:39:29
But when i do startkde
tangled_z 2017-02-22 11:39:33
TheNH813: it told me now "the command dhcpd can be found in the following packages..." so its's not installed?
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:39:51
tangled_z: Hm..... try just the dhclient part.
brainwash 2017-02-22 11:40:17
weaksauce: it is evaluated by bash. see man bash
pascal_ 2017-02-22 11:40:26
k1l thanks
tangled_z 2017-02-22 11:40:32
TheNH813: Ok thanks, doing it now
j4f-shredder 2017-02-22 11:40:55
hey, I just tried the live cd and the wifi adaptor works fine
j4f-shredder 2017-02-22 11:41:04
how do I restablish the system?
k1l 2017-02-22 11:41:07
LooCfur_: apt policy package will tell if the package is installed or not and what version is in what repo, i guess that is what the user wanted to know :)
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:41:48
tangled_z: If that doesn't work, I can give you a file containing the necessary .deb packages, if you have a way to copy them onto the system and tell my the OS version.
tangled_z 2017-02-22 11:42:06
TheNH813: Thanks a lot! It works now :)
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:42:34
tangled_z: Make sure to get dhcpd installed, it's what automatically gets an IP address when the ethernet goes live.
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:42:44
Then get NetworkManager.
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:42:57
If you need it to do anything other then auto config.
SinaME 2017-02-22 11:42:57

SinaME 2017-02-22 11:43:04
I really need help.
tangled_z 2017-02-22 11:43:10
TheNH813: Thanks! Will do that now :)
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:43:16
SinaME: Yes? Waht's the problem?
SinaME 2017-02-22 11:43:18
I followed this tutorial: https://www.linux.com/learn/how-easily-install-ubuntu-chromebook-crouton%20
SinaME 2017-02-22 11:43:31
i have kde downloaded
j4f-shredder 2017-02-22 11:43:52
k1l I did what you said
TheNH813 2017-02-22 11:44:01
SinaME: What the problem with it then?
j4f-shredder 2017-02-22 11:44:02
the wifi adaptor works on the live cd
j4f-shredder 2017-02-22 11:44:14
how do I bring the kernel of my installed version to the one on the live cd??
SinaME 2017-02-22 11:44:23
when i do "startkde" it pops up a window saying "could not start d-bus. can you call qdbus"
j4f-shredder 2017-02-22 11:44:39
or whatever you had planned for me to do?
SinaME 2017-02-22 11:44:59
i read online to fix it i should do "chronos@localhost / $ sudo rm -r -f /usr/local/chroots/precise"
