colematt 2017-02-22 09:45:22
@nacc: I am not partial to the kernel version, but I am trying to follow along on the tutorial, and that's what the instructions had. This is my first time modifying the kernel.
ApafusNode 2017-02-22 09:46:08
/server irc.netsplit.de
nacc 2017-02-22 09:46:12
colematt: from using what? `apt-get source linux-image-$(uname -r)` ?
ApafusNode 2017-02-22 09:46:18
Cricky.
colematt 2017-02-22 09:47:15
Long story short, I need to modify it so that I can add EXPORT_SYMBOL(do_execve) to exec.c ... I need that for a kprobe I'm writing.
colematt 2017-02-22 09:47:26
@nacc: yes, that was the command I used.
nacc 2017-02-22 09:47:29
colematt: you're system is not running a current kernel then :/
Guest39470 2017-02-22 09:47:32
hey
Guest72013 2017-02-22 09:47:40
hi
aruns 2017-02-22 09:47:54
Hi, has anyone compiled SFML from scratch via CMake?
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 09:47:54
azizLIGHT: Humm .. " 1.6G 90% / " suggest you have the operating room . what results ' sudo apt autoremove ' ?
nacc 2017-02-22 09:47:59
colematt: *first* apt update; apt upgrade; boot to the current supported kernel and then proceed.
aruns 2017-02-22 09:48:24
Looking at the dependencies needed to set up the build toolchain, and one of the dependencies listed is vorbis, checking apt-cache shows a package called vorbis-tools.
aruns 2017-02-22 09:48:30
Not sure if this is the right package to install?
KingsQuest 2017-02-22 09:48:40
don't freestyle much but i write em as such :D
aruns 2017-02-22 09:48:45
This is for version 2.4 of SFML.
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 09:48:56
Bashing-om: when i did sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade, i got: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24048731/ it lists the package for autoremove
aruns 2017-02-22 09:48:57
And I am on Ubuntu 16.04.
colematt 2017-02-22 09:49:14
@nacc: my concern is that current kernel is 4.x - all references I have for writing kprobes are for 3.x. Will your recommendation take me to a 4.x kernel?
nacc 2017-02-22 09:49:23
colematt: no
nacc 2017-02-22 09:49:28
colematt: i think you are confused about which kernel is where
ioria 2017-02-22 09:49:37
!info libsfml-dev
ubottu 2017-02-22 09:49:37
libsfml-dev (source: libsfml): Simple and Fast Multimedia Library - Development Files. In component universe, is extra. Version 2.4.0+dfsg-2 (yakkety), package size 112 kB, installed size 974 kB
colematt 2017-02-22 09:49:42
@nacc: there's a good chance of that.
KingsQuest 2017-02-22 09:49:43
which kernel ?
debkad 2017-02-22 09:49:43
geirha: thank you very much, the problem was about the extra image :)
KingsQuest 2017-02-22 09:50:01
i getting criminals out of jail too
nacc 2017-02-22 09:50:02
colematt: yes, upstream kernel (as well as x, y, z) are 4.x based
nacc 2017-02-22 09:50:08
colematt: but trusty has several kernels available
coffeeguy 2017-02-22 09:50:11
oh wow linux-signed-image update
colematt 2017-02-22 09:50:28
What would be a good read so I can understand this better?
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:50:28
Hi! I am on ubuntu 14.04 and I am trying to install the package 'crda'. But I get this message:
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:50:30
"Package crda is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'crda' has no installation candidate"
KingsQuest 2017-02-22 09:50:37
ich bein ein lieuber
nacc 2017-02-22 09:50:39
colematt: 3.13.0 based is the 14.04/14.04.1 version; there is also the HWE stack from 16.04 which would be 4.4 based (iirc)
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:50:44
How do I find which source to add for this package?
nacc 2017-02-22 09:50:48
KingsQuest: please stop
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:50:51
I can see it here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/net/crda
ioria 2017-02-22 09:50:52
aruns, on yakkety you have 2.4
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 09:51:05
Bashing-om: should i remove all these packages. why so many packages in autoremove??
nacc 2017-02-22 09:51:26
nitin21: um, crda is in main in all releases currently, what version of ubuntu?
KingsQuest 2017-02-22 09:51:28
i'm a supporter of ubuntu 16.04 :D
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:51:52
nacc, Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS Release: 14.04 Codename: trusty
nacc 2017-02-22 09:52:12
nitin21: please pastebin `apt-cache policy crda`
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 09:52:19
azizLIGHT: Looks to be a lot of obsolete 32 bit packags . Me, I would "do it" . I do have faith in the system and what autoremov will clean out . There is a faint possibility of breakage but if so we fix later .
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:52:30
ioria that is the output https://codeshare.io/2K8xvX
nacc 2017-02-22 09:52:31
nitin21: also note, that 14.04.4 is no longer supported, you should be fully updated to 14.04.5 by now
aruns 2017-02-22 09:52:42
ioria: Ah OK, so I can always install the official package if I want, just a bit of wary of using APT at times as some of the packages are pretty dated.
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:52:43
I have one second to see the logs cause it freezes after connect
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:52:46
and I have to reboot
KingsQuest 2017-02-22 09:53:04
he stole from amiga ?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:53:05
I had to type that by hand
ioria 2017-02-22 09:53:06
aruns, maybe a yakkety vm...
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:53:24
yeah I should :(. Working on some legacy box
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:53:27
nacc, here's the paste: http://pastebin.com/eQ4ZSUe0

EriC^^ login password didnt open it, either. in fact, as I said above, I can enter any gibberish as password, and it returns me 'success! mounted at /tmp/somepath' ?!
aruns 2017-02-22 09:53:42
ioria: Oh sorry, you meant 16.10, assumed you meant 15.x :P
geirha 2017-02-22 09:53:42

nitin21 2017-02-22 09:54:51
okay, also I am actually trying to install "linux-image-extra-3.13.0-88-generic" which requires crda
nacc 2017-02-22 09:54:59
nitin21: uh

nacc 2017-02-22 09:55:03
nitin21: why are you trying to install that kernel??
aruns 2017-02-22 09:55:07
ioria: Thanks. I have a question that should me greatly - I believe there is a command for this with apt-get, but how can I check what a package would actually install?
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 09:55:07
Bashing-om: i did autoremove, but there were no kernels removed
debkad 2017-02-22 09:55:10
geirha: without your answer i was quiet to format and install from zero with all the config, it had to be a big pain hahaha, thanks again
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:55:15
how do I remove the wifi adaptor drivers?? ioria that is the output https://codeshare.io/2K8xvX
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 09:55:18
Bashing-om: i still have tons of kernel in my /boot
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:55:23
it seems there are two drivers
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:55:25
or something
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:55:50
or I could even settle with doing a downgrade, I dont care at this point
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:55:53
this is too unstable
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 09:56:07
Bashing-om: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24048775/
ioria 2017-02-22 09:56:08
aruns, apt-cache policy libsfml-dev
aruns 2017-02-22 09:56:25
ioria: Ah, the -s flag looks like it would work also.
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:56:38
nacc, I am trying to install kernel because docker needs it. Let me find where docker's package does that. Meanwhile pastebin: http://pastebin.com/eig1hFf7
nacc 2017-02-22 09:57:04
nitin21: that seems like nonsense. So because docker needs something, you'll make your machine vulnerable to security issues?
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:57:24
nacc, https://github.com/garethr/garethr-docker/blob/master/manifests/install.pp#L32
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:57:35
ha
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:57:42
could someone please tell me how to remove some drivers?? Im totally lost
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 09:57:44
ioria that is the output https://codeshare.io/2K8xvX
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 09:57:47
azizLIGHT: Then the package manager is broke on old kernels .. maybe so old back that autoremove does not apply ? ... let's get rid of the clutter so I see the tree in the forrest .
nacc 2017-02-22 09:58:33
nitin21: so first, you need to update your system
nacc 2017-02-22 09:58:37
nitin21: to the current 14.04
nacc 2017-02-22 09:58:46
nitin21: full stop. anyting else is unsupported
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:59:13
nacc, okay. I will work on that :)
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 09:59:22
azizLIGHT: Now let's remove all the packages marked as rc ( removed but config files remain): dpkg --list |grep "^rc" | cut -d " " -f 3 | xargs sudo dpkg --purge
ojatko 2017-02-22 09:59:22
EriC^^ it's ok, I will try something else to do what I wanted with the home folder. thank you so much!
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:59:27
thanks nacc!
nacc 2017-02-22 09:59:38
nitin21: that will probably fix the other things. You are also not using any (or hardly any) actual ubuntu repositories, so it's hard for me to tell what is correct
EriC^^ 2017-02-22 09:59:52
ojatko: ok, no problem
nitin21 2017-02-22 09:59:54
yeah, we limit the repositories
nitin21 2017-02-22 10:00:06
I can add some if I need them
nacc 2017-02-22 10:00:23
nitin21: you are *only* running a kernel.org mirror of trusty-updates. I have no idea where your trusty release is, but that's why you can't install crda.
nacc 2017-02-22 10:00:28
nitin21: you are so far from running ubuntu that it's not supportable here
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:00:54
nitin21 please, I need your help, I have to work and my computer freezes when I plug the wifi adaptor . https://codeshare.io/2K8xvX that is what I get
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 10:00:55
Bashing-om: i dunno if i want to do that one. i want to keep configs
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:00:58
and then the computer freezes
nitin21 2017-02-22 10:01:19
nacc, oh okay, yeah. I was just working on some legacy system and I am not expert on this. Kinda stuck but maybe updating ubuntu might be the required step
nacc 2017-02-22 10:01:33
nitin21: seriously, it's not ubuntu the way it is configured now.
nacc 2017-02-22 10:01:37
nitin21: i don't know what it is
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:01:57
Should I go back to windows and forget about ubuntu? if everyday I will have driver problems I might stick with the easy stuff, this is way over my head and too unstable
nitin21 2017-02-22 10:02:00
I see
genii 2017-02-22 10:03:44
j4f-shredder__: Alternately, get a better adapter that's not Broadcom based
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 10:03:50
azizLIGHT: Oh but the faith of a musstard seed . will only remove files that no longer serve any purpose as the packages have been removed .
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:04:14
This adapter worked for a year and ahalf and it works on windows without any problem
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 10:04:16
Bashing-om: yes but i wanna keep the configs i may install those packages again
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:04:19
that is not the problem
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:04:35
the problem is that with a new update it seems that it installed two drivers or something
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:04:37
https://codeshare.io/2K8xvX
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:04:38
check
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:05:25
how can I remove everything
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:05:29
from the wifi card
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:05:34
and start from scratch
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 10:05:43
Bashing-om: for example, i want to keep the nvidia stuff, glances, nautilius-pushbullet,
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 10:05:47
Bashing-om: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24048829/
Bashing-om 2017-02-22 10:05:50
azizLIGHT: K, then I see what I can do through all the clutter . bear with me while I look . and we sic 'dpkg' on the old kernels.
genii 2017-02-22 10:06:38
j4f-shredder__: The problem is that the adapter manufacturer has designed their hardware with only Windows in mind for it to operate under, without providing information to the linux device driver authors to make a proper driver for it.
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:06:59
but why yesterday it worked
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:08
and now it isn't?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:14
I havent done any dist upgrade
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:15
or anything
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:30
I've used it for one year and a half on ubuntu
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:41
so that cannot be the problem
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:52
How do I uninstall every wifi adapter driver?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:07:58
that would be more helpful to know
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:08:00
I might try that
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:09:20
please, I just need to know that
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:09:25
how to uninstall all drivers
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:09:51
the name of the firmware is rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw_TMSC.bin
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:10:05
driver name rtl8192cu
genii 2017-02-22 10:10:21
j4f-shredder__: All drivers are part of each kernel package. The way to prevent a driver from being used is to blacklist it instead
genii 2017-02-22 10:10:44
!blacklist
ubottu 2017-02-22 10:10:44
To blacklist a module, edit /etc/modprobe.d/my_blacklist.conf and add « blacklist » to the end of that list - To explicitly load modules in a specific order, list them in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and type « sudo update-initramfs -u »
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:10:45
but if I black list it then will it reinstall it when plugged?
genii 2017-02-22 10:10:53
j4f-shredder__: No
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:11:01
so that wont do any good
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:11:06
I just need to start from scratch
genii 2017-02-22 10:11:09
j4f-shredder__: Blacklisting a driver means it will never be used.
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:11:28
I just need to discard what's installed and then let the SO install it again when plugged
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:11:49
is there any way to discard all updates from the last 24 hours?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:11:56
I did an autoclean command
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:12:00

j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:12:08

Hi folks. Is there a way to make ubuntu scream at me when disk space is low?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:12:52
I did that but it the so wont start
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:13:20
it just shows a black screen
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:13:31

Bashing-om 2017-02-22 10:13:48
azizLIGHT: Should not be too tough to remove the old kernels, . But dinner is on the table . I be back soonest .
azizLIGHT 2017-02-22 10:13:58
ok :)
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:14:08
Do you know anything more stable than ubuntu? is debian better?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:14:18
and with better support?
genii 2017-02-22 10:16:52
j4f-shredder__: Each kernel has it's own drivers which are in the filesystem usually somewhere like /lib/modules//kernel/drivers area. When you plug something in, it doesn't go out somewhere on the internet or so to find a driver. It just uses the one in that area . If you delete the one it's using, then no driver at all will be used
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:17:29
I will have to reinstall ubuntu 16.04 then
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:17:35
I dont want to waste more time on this
genii 2017-02-22 10:17:39
j4f-shredder__: Ubuntu uses the same drivers that Debian does.
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:17:57
Look, I used ubuntu for a year and a half and only today failed
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:18:09
with this same card
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:18:17
so the driver exists
genii 2017-02-22 10:19:15
j4f-shredder__: Odds are the driver is the same as before. But the kernel changed in some way now that makes the driver no longer work. This is why I already suggested to boot to a previous kernel.
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:19:37
but I only have 2 kernerls
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:19:41
listed
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:19:46
on the advanced options in grub
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:19:50
each one with 3 options
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:21:25
how can I know which was the previous kernel
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:21:32
and how can I set it as default?
colematt 2017-02-22 10:21:39
@nacc: ok, so I finished apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. You told me to "boot to the current supported kernel". Is this as straightforward as rebooting the system, or do I need to do something special?

j4f-shredder__: 'wifi is crushing the system'?
genii 2017-02-22 10:39:19
j4f-shredder__: Consider: how much time are you willing to spend on figuring the problem out or trying various installs of different distributions? Multiply that by minimum wage. Then decide if it's less money or more money than just buying an adapter that will be known to work with both operating systems equally well.
OerHeks 2017-02-22 10:39:25
jferguson, how did you install the driver?
nacc 2017-02-22 10:39:27

k1l 2017-02-22 10:39:56

nacc 2017-02-22 10:40:00
j4f-shredder__: and afaict, failing to get wireless link won't drop you to the emergency shell, unless you have network root
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:40:10
this card has worked for a year and a half
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:40:14

j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:40:20
it failed a couple of hours ago
nacc 2017-02-22 10:40:23

nacc 2017-02-22 10:40:27
j4f-shredder__: what do you mean "failed"?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:40:42

j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:40:48
it never happened before under ubuntu
nacc 2017-02-22 10:40:58
j4f-shredder__: has it worked under that particular kernel before?
bekks 2017-02-22 10:41:08
j4f-shredder__: Did you consider that device being broken?
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:41:14

nacc 2017-02-22 10:41:56
j4f-shredder__: both of those are proprietary OSes, which can pay vendors to be compatible
yobagme_ 2017-02-22 10:41:58
j4f-shredder__: What if you boot into an Ubuntu live USB and try the wifi device from there? What happens?
nacc 2017-02-22 10:42:09
yobagme_: an excellent suggestion
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:42:16
if it does work
j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:42:21

j4f-shredder__ 2017-02-22 10:42:52

yobagme_ 2017-02-22 10:43:29
Boot off the USB first and see if it works. At least verify if its working or not under that
