tatertots 2017-02-24 18:57:43
ragnarock_2: do you have a printer?
ragnarock_2 2017-02-24 18:58:54
Not attached to this thing, no
tatertots 2017-02-24 18:59:13
ragnarock_2: ok
ragnarock_2 2017-02-24 18:59:19
There is a Kodak AIO Hero in my home network I could possibly access via LPD
ragnarock_2 2017-02-24 18:59:29
But, I have no clue how to do that :/
tatertots 2017-02-24 19:01:40
ragnarock_2: my concern is that "ubuntu-drivers" does not exist for you. which is the ideal way that you would normally discover proprietary drivers
tatertots 2017-02-24 19:01:50
ragnarock_2: you can try a manual strategy however YMMV
ragnarock_2 2017-02-24 19:01:55
YMMV?
tocmo0nlord 2017-02-24 19:07:50
i want to make an empty file can i do touch .htaccess ?
tarball 2017-02-24 19:08:46
I repeated the test and and the test report in xlsx file again! since when does ubuntu work with ms office?
Bashing-om 2017-02-24 19:09:09
tocmo0nlord: Depends; who has access to the directoy that contains .htacces ?
tocmo0nlord 2017-02-24 19:09:18
i hax root
Bashing-om 2017-02-24 19:10:09
tocmo0nlord: Care then .. root'n around where root is not needed can have undesired side-effects .
epac 2017-02-24 19:10:15
I'm trying to setup an initrd for booting a system with a USB nic (r8152). The module is in the right place (best i can tell -- i can modprobe the module from tty2). setting up the modprobe command in the early_command on the preseed appears to not load the module... any suggestions?
tocmo0nlord 2017-02-24 19:10:37
will the command work tho?
tocmo0nlord 2017-02-24 19:10:46
i could nano but im curious to touch
tarball 2017-02-24 19:21:22
pavlos, the point is why it is in xslx format?
tarball 2017-02-24 19:21:58
Does ubuntu contain ms office?
pavlos 2017-02-24 19:22:24
tarball, libreoffice and librecalc
tarball 2017-02-24 19:22:27
or libre office?
tarball 2017-02-24 19:23:28
pavlos, then how come the system testing tool of ubuntu created the report output as xlsx file?
epac 2017-02-24 19:30:57
Aurorasaura: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vi - it stands for the shortest ex command to get into visual mode.
Aurorasaura 2017-02-24 19:30:57
like sudo vi /etc/whatever
SwedeMike 2017-02-24 19:30:58
Aurorasaura: "It was not until version 2.0 of ex, released as part of Second Berkeley Software Distribution[4] in May, 1979 that the editor was installed under the name "vi" (which took users straight into ex's visual mode), and the name by which it is known today. "
Aurorasaura 2017-02-24 19:31:09
Thank you epac
pavlos 2017-02-24 19:32:01
tarball, interoperability ... be able to view/edit files either from libreoffice or msoffice
tarball 2017-02-24 19:33:13
interoperability is not about using proprietary format instead of the free format in your hand.
Aurorasaura 2017-02-24 19:33:16
Just wanted to verify that in Ubuntu server changing the /etc/passwd file for a user from /bin/bash to bin/false removes only the ability to log in to the server interface
tarball 2017-02-24 19:33:26
I cant make sense of your argumentation, pavlos
tarball 2017-02-24 19:34:22
let's all use windows formats, then..let's use .exe, .bat, .dll..why dont we do? let's close the FOSS shop
tarball 2017-02-24 19:34:59
then maybe Redmond shows a big interest in developing ubuntu further
pavlos 2017-02-24 19:35:24
tarball, libreoffice writes odt files but also has the ability to read/write excel files. Nothing to do with exe, bat, or dll
epac 2017-02-24 19:36:16
anyone has a clue about debian-installer and when/where i can load drivers?
pavlos 2017-02-24 19:36:45
tarball, since I cannot explain better, I hope someone else will ...
tarball 2017-02-24 19:36:59
sure I will bring this up in a wider sense
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:38:17
xlsx format was designed in 2006
tarball 2017-02-24 19:38:22
so what?
tarball 2017-02-24 19:38:23
it's ms
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:38:29
ods format was designed in 1994
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:38:46
for a windows 3.1 application called StarOffice
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:39:07
it is clear which one is superior
tarball 2017-02-24 19:39:09
the point is xls is ms excel, which a FOSS system is not supposed to produce its documents with
tarball 2017-02-24 19:39:48
let's adopt all the "superior" stuff from windows then
tarball 2017-02-24 19:40:14
let's make it SOSS..superior open source software
tarball 2017-02-24 19:40:29
superior as in superior speech
epac 2017-02-24 19:40:50
tarball: to a certain extent the format has been reversed engineered, so a FOSS system could. that being said, it doesn't help the argument to keep things "Free(TM)/Libre" in the long run, but it does help with interoperability.
epac 2017-02-24 19:41:06
neither one is "superior" to the other, without proper context. Superior at what?
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:41:10
xls format was documented in 2001
tarball 2017-02-24 19:41:23
I didnt say superior
tarball 2017-02-24 19:41:27
I quoted
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:41:39
and it is trivial to implement
uzjsn 2017-02-24 19:41:56
unlike ODS which requires XML and ZIP
epac 2017-02-24 19:42:27
tarball: that was more aimed at uzjsn...
tarball 2017-02-24 19:42:31
epac, yes I see
epac 2017-02-24 19:42:34
well, Zip is patented...
epac 2017-02-24 19:42:48
so technically, not "free".
tarball 2017-02-24 19:44:29
the logic of such adoption is flawed
