JFox762 2017-02-28 02:47:49
is there some way to run memtest86 equivalent on linux?
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:48:27
you don't run it from within an OS
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:48:30
it's a boot option
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:48:41
if you run it from within the OS - it's not going to be a sane test
JFox762 2017-02-28 02:48:43
hmmm....
JFox762 2017-02-28 02:48:52
thing is... uhh
JFox762 2017-02-28 02:48:59
Im on a chromebook c720
JFox762 2017-02-28 02:49:06
running gallium OS
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:49:13
then why are you in this channel ?
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:49:18
asking for help, as this is nothing to do with ubuntu
JFox762 2017-02-28 02:49:49
well it is based on ubuntu
nils_ 2017-02-28 02:49:56
Hello all, this my first message. Hope you have a great day!
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:50:04
it's not ubuntu though
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:50:07
and this channel only supports ubuntu
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:50:15
Hello, anyone knows how to block ubuntu from computing? It keeps going and I don't know how to stop
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:50:31
RxMcDonald: whats the problem
JFox762 2017-02-28 02:50:51
sorry
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:51:04
JFox762: no problem
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:51:06
ikonia: It keeps computing but I need to compute something else
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:51:19
RxMcDonald: explain the problem "it's computing" means nothing
ic3cdr 2017-02-28 02:52:16
Hi
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:52:21
ikonia: the CPU keeps going and going and I need to compute other things
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:52:36
RxMcDonald: what is it being used by
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:53:07
ikonia: Ubuntu keeps computing and i can't do anything It's computing with the CPU
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:53:16
RxMcDonald: what is using the cpu
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:53:26
ikonia: Ubuntu
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:53:29
RxMcDonald: no it's not
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:53:37
RxMcDonald: what process is using the cpu
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:54:34
Ubuntu keeps computing, I can't do anything
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:54:45
RxMcDonald: how do you know this
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:54:48
how do you know it's "computing"
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:55:16
Because I can see the computer CPU with a green light in front of it
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:55:33
RxMcDonald: sorry, I'm not accepting this as a diagnosis
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:55:36
It is flashing very fast so it's still computing
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:55:45
RxMcDonald: lets start from the begining, what version of ubuntu is this
theptr 2017-02-28 02:55:59
Does anybody know a good chat client for ubuntu ? I want to use if possible facebook messenger irc and whatsapp in 1 client :)
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:56:12
theptr: you'll be dissapointed then
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:56:17
ubuntu 6.10
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:56:29
RxMcDonald: then it's not supported
theptr 2017-02-28 02:56:32
ikonia, is it not possible ?
geirha 2017-02-28 02:56:35
Hopefully you accidentally left out the leading 1 there
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:56:43
ikonia: ok how do I add more ubuntu in the CPU?
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:56:53
RxMcDonald: sorry - we don't support ubuntu 6.10 here
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:57:05
it's an end of life distirbution
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:57:06
ikonia: tell me how to increase the ubuntu in the CPU please
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:57:07
and I've got to be honest, I think this is a "troll" question
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:57:14
RxMcDonald: no, 6.10 is end of life
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:57:25
yes but how do I increase the ubuntu?
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:57:37
as if any cpu has a flashing light on the mother board to show how hard its working
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:57:45
RxMcDonald: discussion over, your distribution is not supported,
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 02:58:10
but I want to increase ubuntu to supported CPU
geirha 2017-02-28 02:58:11
Support for Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft ended April 2008
theptr 2017-02-28 02:58:12
ikonia, i think he wants to know how to upgrade his ubuntu to for example 16.04
pauljw 2017-02-28 02:58:18
theptr, try pidgin
theptr 2017-02-28 02:58:33
pauljw, going to give it a try
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:59:11
theptr: I don't think thats the case at all,
cfhowlett 2017-02-28 02:59:20
sorry guys, but RxMcDonald is a confirmed troll. comes by about every 10 days with off the wall queries such as this. best to add to /ignore
ikonia 2017-02-28 02:59:34
cfhowlett: thank you, I suspected as much
theptr 2017-02-28 02:59:59
cfhowlett, that makes sense :)
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:10:02
guys I have reinstall my systema and all the installation process has been very complicated. Now all that is installation doesnt work or works slowly
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:10:05
why can this be?
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:10:50
define doesn't work please Condor_peregrino
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:17:57
ikonia: for example I want to install the "Terminator" terminal. I did a successful installation through the terminal without any problem. Then I try to open it from Ubuntu menu and it tries to open but nothing happens. Then I run the command "Terminator" form the terminal and it works awesome. That happens with many packages that Im trying to install
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:18:45
Condor_peregrino: thats not being slow
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:19:12
Condor_peregrino: that suggests to me the place you're installing to is not in the desktops path/location aware, so it can't open the applications
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:24:26
Good afternoon!
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:24:40
I have a problem... maybe someone can help me...
blocky 2017-02-28 03:25:12
Taxicletter: I guess we'll never know
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:25:29
Unless I ask a question, of course!
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:25:31
:-D
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:25:52
I'm on Xubuntu and I have an external USB drive, FAT, with my music on it.
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:26:33
I just took a backup from that drive with Back In Time. Now I want to copy some more music to it, but I have no acces, While me myself am the owner??
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:27:19
With read/write permissions. The group is also my name, but only read permissions. I try to change that in the property window, but that doesn't work...
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:27:33
SO, blocky... can you help? :-)
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 03:27:53
Taxicletter, do you have the drive UUID entered in /etc/fstab?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:29:49
I don't think so, I didn't do that anyway.
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:31:28
Anyone in chat using VOIP softphone software for their PC? I tried to setup our windows version using wine/mono but although it installs when I load it I just get a black app window and high CPU usage
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:31:50
use a native linux one
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:32:13
Any recommendations?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:32:23
In fstab is only my harddrive, it says to use blkid and than I have it there:"/dev/sdc1: LABEL="MUZIK" UUID="192F-1717" TYPE="vfat"
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:32:23
"
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:32:25
doesn't the astrix client support softphone ?
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:32:56
ikonia, I'm new to this, don't know about astrix but the windows one is 3CX,
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:33:05
yeeve: look up astrix
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:33:12
yeeve: see if the client does enough of what you want
Pici 2017-02-28 03:33:46
*asterisk
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:34:04
ikonia: I agree, how can I fix this?. How can I detect what is real problem?
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:34:05
thanks Pici
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:34:34
Condor_peregrino: I'd look at the programs you are installing them. how you are installing them, then research how to setup unitys desktop to be aware of those locations
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:34:36
Can't seem to find astrix/asterisk clients but there is a lot of recommendations for Ekiga so I'll start there
hateball 2017-02-28 03:35:02
yeeve: what you want is a SIP client, and Ekiga is one
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:35:16
ikonia: all the programs has been installed from Ubuntu software center, thats why I have this doubts. They should be installed correctly with no problem or not?
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 03:35:23
Taxicletter, for example here's my outboard sata drive entry in /etc/fstab : UUID=b56bb1a6-e887-4383-aaeb-e9ad50d34f47 /media/kaj ext4 defaults 0 1
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:35:31
I see hateball thanks for the clarification :) pretty new to this stuff
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:35:33
ikonia: should I use my SSD for all the programs and the storage on the HDD?
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:35:54
ikonia: both disks are encrypted
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:36:14
@BluesKaj this is what mount gives about that drive: /dev/sdc1 on /media/jonathan/MUZIK type vfat (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,showexec,utf8,flush,errors=remount-ro,uhelper=udisks2)
hateball 2017-02-28 03:36:17
yeeve: and well, your voip solution needs to use standards of course, so you dont in fact have to use some combo of a particular proprietary client
ikonia 2017-02-28 03:37:05
Condor_peregrino: you don't normally get a choice the installer will install in common locations (eg: /usr/bin) it's up to you if you use the ssd for that or not
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 03:37:12
Taxicletter,, use sudo blkid for the UUID of your drive
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:37:43
I thought as much hateball but I had to try the windows client first to please management, it does't work so now I'll look for a native linux client which will fit our needs. Do you have any recommendations? Ekiga has poor reviews in SoftCent but I'm still happy to try it out
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:38:09
I did, I already posted that: /dev/sdc1: LABEL="MUZIK" UUID="192F-1717" TYPE="vfat"
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 03:39:45
that's not a UUID m use blkid for it
hateball 2017-02-28 03:40:31
yeeve: Not really, I've mostly used Ekiga. Just try it and see if it goes well
yeeve 2017-02-28 03:40:53
Ok hateball I will do :thumbs-up:
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:41:13
ikonia: perfect
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:41:17
BluesKaj, this is the complete output of blkid: ~$ blkid
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:41:27
~$ blkid
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 03:41:39
sudo blkid
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:41:43
Hm, it doesn't paste

ikonia: I have detected the error, how can I send you an image through here?
Condor_peregrino 2017-02-28 03:43:19
ikonia: pastebin is for terminal but images?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:43:32
sudo blkid

Even line for line it doesn't paste? I don't know pastebin, I try it
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 03:45:09
Taxicletter, sudo blkid in the terminal
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:45:31
yes I know, and sudo or not, it gives the same result.
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:46:07
for the other drives, i see a partuuid, but not for the usb drive, that only has a uuid
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:46:12
Taxicletter: what doesn't paste
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:46:53
If I copy line per line from my terminal window, it seems to dissappear when I hit "enter" in HexChat.

Taxicletter, that's why I suggested pastebin, to prevent flooding
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:49:18
Taxicletter: you don't need to put it to fstab unless you plan on using it all the time and having it automount and stuff
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:49:33
Oops. Sorry BluesKaj
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:49:50
Okay, but how come I can't write to it anymore, suddenly?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:50:05
I'm the owner, I can see, and I have read and write permissions.
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:50:16
Taxicletter: you mounted via something with elevated privileges probably
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:50:28
Only the GROUP I'm in (same name as my user name) has only read permissions.
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:50:47
touch /media/jonathan/MUZIK/blablatest
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:50:53
I unmounted and re-mounted in, but that didn't help
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:51:40
Taxicletter: try "ls -ld /media/jonathan/MUZIK", what's it say?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:52:35
It says: drwxr-xr-x 37 jonathan jonathan 32768 jan 1 1970 /media/jonathan/MUZIK
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:52:51
ok, type "id"
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:52:52
Hm, that date is strange, no?
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:53:01
yeah, it's epoch date

EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:53:12

EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:53:39
wow that's a *ton of stuff
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:53:45
I tried to get me in every possible group, but I'm not finished yet, it's to many groups.
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:53:55
what for?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:53:57
I tried that to solve the writing problem
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:54:25
I like linux a lot, but I go crazy from the permission stuff.
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:54:30
ok, try "touch /media/jonathan/MUZIK/blablatest"
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:54:56
Nothing happens?
Sam54 2017-02-28 03:55:08
Taxicletter take a look at chmod and chown
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:55:12
yes, theres a new file in MUZIK
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:55:16
Taxicletter: that means it worked, try "ls -l /media/jonathan/MUZIK/blablatest"
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:55:30
Taxicletter: ok, so you can write then
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:55:41
-rw-r--r-- 1 jonathan jonathan 0 feb 28 15:54 /media/jonathan/MUZIK/blablatest
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:56:46
ok, try copying the music over
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:58:02
Nope. Still get the error message: read only
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:58:15
Restart the whole computer maybe?
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:58:17
Taxicletter: what command are you running?
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:58:17
no
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:58:57
I'm dragging the folder from my dropbox-folder to the MUZIK drive.
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 03:59:13
I could sudo Thunar and then try again.
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 03:59:52
in thunar can you create a random file?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 04:01:01
sudo thunar did work. but WHY is this happening? I could drag files and folders to MUZIK with no problem, and suddenly not anymore...
dylan 2017-02-28 04:01:07
hola
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:01:29
Taxicletter: when you do just "thunar /media/jonathan/MUZIK"
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:01:33
what happens?
Taxicletter 2017-02-28 04:03:27
Then MUZIK opens (that's handy! thanks, good to know)
condorperegrinio 2017-02-28 04:07:00

I created a bootable drive to put and E64 Ubuntu 16.04 on my computer and somehow it ended up just being the shell now all I have is a black screen with the command line that doesn't seem to like me very much and it definitely will not give me anything I can't do a sudo command because it keeps coming back with a failed attempt to fetch archives
Carly 2017-02-28 04:24:44
I'm not extremely experienced so any help would be much appreciated
Carly 2017-02-28 04:25:49
All of the errors are saying temporary failure resolving us.archive.ubuntu.co
RxMcDonald 2017-02-28 04:26:22
Hello, anyone can help me increase the amount of Ubuntu inside of my CPU?
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 04:27:36

blocky 2017-02-28 04:27:48
RxMcDonald: have you tried a hammer and chisel?
ducasse 2017-02-28 04:27:58

tatertots: I am not a computer engineer
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:34:11
it's a desktop environment. The GUI.
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:34:17
RxMcDonald: please just leave.
Carly 2017-02-28 04:34:18

BluesKaj 2017-02-28 04:35:14
Carly, you have no internet connection to the repositories
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:35:40
xheart: yes, you just have to install kde
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:35:48
xheart: and then remove unity, if you want.
xheart 2017-02-28 04:36:43
is kubuntu a more complete OS than Lubuntu?
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:37:05
neither is more "complete" than the other. They are the same OS with different desktop environments.
Carly 2017-02-28 04:37:16
Nicomachus again I am only getting failed to fetch some archives maybe run apt get update or try with --fix-mssiing
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:37:28
Carly: you're going to need an internet connection.
Carly 2017-02-28 04:37:29
It had me set up the internet on initial.boot
k1l 2017-02-28 04:37:51
xheart: lubuntus target is slow and old hardware. so its reduced some services
xheart 2017-02-28 04:38:28
ok so kubuntu is better?
ducasse 2017-02-28 04:38:48
xheart: 'better' is subjective
Carly 2017-02-28 04:38:53
Blueskaj how do I get the error of unable to fetch archives fixed
xheart 2017-02-28 04:39:08

Carly 2017-02-28 04:39:11
Nicomachus I have one
Carly 2017-02-28 04:39:14
Internet is gtg
Carly 2017-02-28 04:39:25
Should I hard wire?
k1l 2017-02-28 04:39:52
xheart: if you do like kubuntu, xubuntu, ubuntu, ubuntu mate, ubuntu budgie etc. more, its your choice.
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:40:03
Carly: sure
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:40:45
Carly: try to set the internet up and be able to ping google.com
Carly 2017-02-28 04:41:05
How do I ping from terminal
nicomachus 2017-02-28 04:41:14

Carly 2017-02-28 04:42:47
Hard wire it is
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:42:50
Carly: did you put an ethernet cable in?
Carly 2017-02-28 04:42:51
Right?
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:43:02
Carly: well you could do wifi too
Carly 2017-02-28 04:43:10
No give me two seconds have to relocate
EriC^^ 2017-02-28 04:43:22
ok
SwamiDevaNiravo 2017-02-28 04:43:39
Carly: if the internet cable is plug on pc, you have to nano /etc/resolv.conf and put the nameserver (dns) here
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 04:43:52
Carly, if you setup a wifi connection during the installation , it's obviously no connected now , so use an ethernet connection if possible (hard wired)
tatertots 2017-02-28 04:43:59
Carly: hard wire the system, and really give some thought to if you really require ubuntu "server"...sounds like you'd be very dependent on a gui
