So I have a 16.04 box here and last night I turned both monitors off instead of letting them go to powersaving mode. This morning I am being told the second display is disabled and I have no signal going to it.
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:45:57
Someone up
raub 2017-02-23 01:46:01
Short of doing a Windows, anything I can do?
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:46:05
azizLIGHT: ok go for it
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:46:12
Hi guys
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:46:25
hi mahakal
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:46:28
EriC^^: completed ok
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:46:46
i have some question about GRUB boot loader on ubuntu 14.04
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:46:50
azizLIGHT: ok, try to reinstall a package to see if it'll get the older version instead
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:47:07
like this one? sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri:i386
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:47:09
azizLIGHT: try sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-radeon
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:47:12
ok
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:47:41
I have installed grub-pc package in order to update grub
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:47:57
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-radeon http://paste.ubuntu.com/24052881/
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:47:59
mahakal: why are you updating grub?
paws 2017-02-23 01:48:27
my /boot is full, can somebody tell me what can i delete from here: http://pastebin.ca/3771224
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:48:31
because there was a lot confusion
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:48:33
like
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:49:26
when i interrupt the boot process it shows "grub 2.." but manually checking it was giving "grub 0.97"
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:49:57
now grub-pc has been successfully installed
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:49:58
but
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:50:07
it is not active
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:50:19
azizLIGHT: i think it's still trying to get the xorg-edgers version somehow
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:50:31
azizLIGHT: try apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-radeon
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:51:09
EriC^^: it still is: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24052886/
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:51:12
paws: type "uname -r" what kernel are you running right now?
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:51:21
do i need to do a sudo apt-get update?
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:51:30
azizLIGHT: yes
Trion 2017-02-23 01:51:58
I have dual booted Windows 10 and Ubuntu, sometimes when I start the bootloading screen for selecting the OS doesn't work. It starts to work if I use Windows for a while and then restart the laptop
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:52:01
mahakal: aha
paws 2017-02-23 01:52:03
EriC^^: 4.4.0-63-generic
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:52:05
boot/grub/grub.cfg and boot/grub/main.lst exist at same time
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:52:36
so i think there is one last step that i am missing for completely installing the new version
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:52:39
mahakal: try "dpkg -l | grep grub | nc termbin.com 9999" and paste the link it gives you here
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 01:53:11
EriC^^: after sudo apt-get update, i tried apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-radeon and i still got: http://paste.ubuntu.com/24052893/
Trion 2017-02-23 01:53:13
Any permanent solution for the grub screen?
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:53:37
paws: ok, type "ls /boot | nc termbin.com 9999" and paste the link it gives you here
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:54:20
Trion: what do you mean by it doesn't work?
Trion 2017-02-23 01:54:58
Keyboard keys do not give any response
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:55:10
Eric : i have done that
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:55:21
how to submit that however?

mahakal 2017-02-23 01:57:23

EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:59:10
mahakal: copy and paste the link here
mahakal 2017-02-23 01:59:28
i have done that...but there is no submit button
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 01:59:51
azizLIGHT: i'm pretty stumped
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:00:12
azizLIGHT: i got an idea, try to remove the package
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:00:24
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-radeon
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:00:41
mahakal: did it give you a link http://termbin.com/something ?
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 02:00:46
EriC^^: i still have a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xorg-edgers-ppa-trusty.list
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:00:52
yup
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:01:08

too ling?
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:09:27
what do you mean?
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:09:35
fw0: is an interface, and then everything below that is the attributes of the adapter.
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:09:59
lo0: , for example, is your loopback.
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:10:22
Its ip address is 127.0.0.1, etc.
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:10:27
ok...
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:10:34
but is there something wrong?
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:10:42
en1, for example, would be your first phsyical ethernet adapter.
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:10:46

Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:18:09

tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:18:15
well, it depends...

mahakal: if you need to paste stuff go to http://paste.ubuntu.com cause the bot would ban you if you do longer lines
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:18:27
depends about what?
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:18:27
i saw a tunnel interface, which is typically a vpn client.
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:18:32

LuMint 2017-02-23 02:18:57
there's one thing I've been meaning to ask. There's a new CVE out there, expoiting DCCP. I'd like to turn it off. Will creating /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-dccp.conf and adding the 4 lines to it do? https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2017/CVE-2017-6074.html
tcpdump 2017-02-23 02:18:58

Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:19:12
yes...I dont need..not really

how to erase that?
EriC^ 2017-02-23 02:19:35

azizLIGHT: try with -s first
EriC^ 2017-02-23 02:21:26
mahakal: it looks good, run "sudo update-grub" for good measure
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:21:34
nope
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:21:45
Eric^:OK
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:21:54
Im asking if its f let it be what ever it may be inactive...
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:22:11
just leting it there....nao worries about this long output?
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 02:22:20

one of the things I enjoy with Microsoft RDC is the fact that the remote desktop "syncs" with the local device: same resolution, sound etc. is there any VNC app that can do this for Ubuntu/Lubuntu?
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:26:21
EriC^^, I don't have access to my login session
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:27:16
Razva, have you seen x2go?
Razva 2017-02-23 02:28:03
alkisg: I'm on a Mac, I can see that x2g has a Mac client
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:28:16
EriC^^, I only see the ubuntu logo and can see the message of lightdm trying to start forever while pressing F1
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:28:42
Aliekezhi: oh ok
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:28:51
so the login screen never appears
darksa 2017-02-23 02:28:53
ccc
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:28:54
EriC^^, I would like to interrupt this and be able to have a terminal access
tarball 2017-02-23 02:28:58
Eric^^ I wish it were that :) no, it is a live dvd
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:29:02
Aliekezhi: try ctrl+alt+f1
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:29:19
EriC^^, I'm already there
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:29:39
tarball: aha, that's pretty interesting
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:29:48
EriC^^, but no login is asked, I see for ever the message [FAILED] failed to start lightdm
tarball 2017-02-23 02:30:04
Eric^^ do you think it's worth a try with testdisk?
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:30:29
tarball: not sure what to suggest for it except maybe try photorec or testdisk, there are a lot of tools for data recovery in ubuntu
Welastevil 2017-02-23 02:31:26
if not...its ok... i dont think it an mean any harm...
tarball 2017-02-23 02:31:44
Eric^^ I never had experience with these on a dvd, I hope one of them works
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:31:47
tarball: try to join ##linux and ask there as well, they might know about it
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 02:31:58
EriC^^: what else should i try
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:32:39
mahakal: aha, something is a little weird about the efi there
anddam 2017-02-23 02:33:15
can I emulate middle button on a laptop?
anddam 2017-02-23 02:33:38
I'd like to alt-resize my windows like I used with an actual 3-buttons mouse
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:33:40
tarball: you ran a live dvd and created a document or something, and you saved it to ram, and now you want to find it again after reboot???
anddam 2017-02-23 02:33:56
or, rebind the resize action to alt-right click maybe
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:34:02
mahakal: can you type (ls /sys/firmware/efi; sudo parted -l; cat /etc/fstab) |& nc termbin.com 9999 ?
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:34:14
ok
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:34:19
thanks
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:34:29
EriC^^, well actually I used the recovery mode, that's the only way I found to have an access
erwin 2017-02-23 02:34:48
hello guys
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:35:22
Ok done that
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:35:25
http://termbin.com/szpc
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:35:28
Aliekezhi: aha, the logs for lightdm might show some info about the problem, they're in /var/log/lightdm also try using an older kernel if it happened after a restart
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:36:03
hi everyone
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:36:21
mahakal: aha, you need to install grub-efi cause you're using uefi
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:36:21
I know this is a no no but just now
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:36:34
I just shutdown my linux because my browser hang up and the whole laptop hang up too
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:36:44
EriC^^, I'm really astonished that a simple error with session/DM blocks everything like this...Usually it's possible (on other distributions :p) to change tty and startx manually etc
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:36:50
While that happened I was installing netbeans
Aliekezhi 2017-02-23 02:37:01
EriC^^, ty for the log path
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:37:13
mahakal: type sudo apt-get purge grub-pc grub-pc-bin; sudo apt-get install grub-efi-amd64-signed
tarball 2017-02-23 02:37:16
alkisg, I saved it on 'Documents' folder of the live ubuntu dvd-
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:37:17
so I do not know how to continue the installation from where it left off
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:37:32
any command I can use to continue the unfinished installation
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:37:45
tarball: this is in RAM, not in a hard disk. RAM by definition gets erased when the power is lost (reboots etc)
azizLIGHT 2017-02-23 02:38:03
EriC^^: is it even safe for me to reboot at this point
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:38:42
tarball: the live DVD uses the DVD and the computer RAM to "emulate" a writeable system, so anything that you save on desktop etc in the live session, end up in RAM, and are completely lost on reboots
tarball 2017-02-23 02:39:13
alkisg, there is no such thing as RAM data recovery?
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:40:33
tarball: after reboot, no, not really
tarball 2017-02-23 02:40:49
alkisg..oh
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:40:58
azizLIGHT: maybe if you remove them one by one it won't much of a problem? hold on
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:40:59
Eric^: done
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:41:28
mahakal: ok, try "sudo grub-install; sudo update-grub"
LuMint 2017-02-23 02:41:52
There's a new CVE out there, expoiting DCCP. I'd like to turn it off. Will creating /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-dccp.conf and adding the 4 lines to it do? https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2017/CVE-2017-6074.html
LuMint 2017-02-23 02:42:02
in short, how do I disable DCCP?
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:42:23
easyOnMe: usually "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" are enough, and if it needs something more like dpkg --configure -a, it will prompt you to run it
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:42:30
Eric when grub-pc is not removd,it said "if you remove grub-pc the system will not reboot next time until you have new config file"
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:42:42
so choose no to remove it
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:42:51
azizLIGHT: save this file http://termbin.com/71rt
mahakal 2017-02-23 02:42:53
did i do wrong..
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:43:52
azizLIGHT: then try for i in $(cat filehere); do sudo apt-get purge "$i"; done see what happens
easyOnMe 2017-02-23 02:44:28
alkisg: you mean it will continue the unfinished netbeans installation I happened to disrupt when I shutdown my laptop with a long press
alkisg 2017-02-23 02:44:46
easyOnMe: yes
EriC^^ 2017-02-23 02:44:58
mahakal: hmm, did the last command work correctly?
