guest234862: hrm, liquorix only mentions debian, not ubuntu
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:46:17
nacc the author mentions in the forums and it is build with the debian tools. Tuned for debian jessie, sid and latest ubuntu and ubuntu lts
nauticalnexus 2017-02-01 08:46:28
but there's no 4.4
nauticalnexus 2017-02-01 08:46:46
I'd love to stay as close to the Ubuntu kernel as possible.
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:46:55
sirv I tried using vanilla kernel lts and on arch. On arch I tried linux-zen, ck and latest stable provided
Fritigern 2017-02-01 08:47:36
Guys, I am very disappointed at you all. I asked a question, twice. And I did not even get so much as an acknowlegment.
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:47:37
nauticalnexus Con develops against the latest stable so that will mostly likely not work for you. Unless you are willing to fix the .rej from the patch and do backporting
nacc 2017-02-01 08:47:39
nauticalnexus: why do you think you need this special kernel (and not installing it means you stop being supported here)
randall_ 2017-02-01 08:47:43
Fritigern: Inkscape is your open-source best bet for circular text.
Fritigern 2017-02-01 08:48:06

nacc 2017-02-01 08:49:28
nauticalnexus: i don't think there's a trivial way to backport the patches to the 4.4 base. I genuinely am not sure what guest234862 is referring to, as i'm not clearly seeing it (and not willing to trawl forums to find it) for any ubuntu support.
sirv 2017-02-01 08:49:31
fritigem what about this : http://www.flamingtext.com/logo/Design-Beauty
rajivmars 2017-02-01 08:49:43

nacc 2017-02-01 08:49:45
nauticalnexus: in any case, fairly offtopic at this point, not really an ubuntu support question
clintar 2017-02-01 08:50:50
anyone familiar with building your own php debs and can point me the way to find out how?
nacc 2017-02-01 08:51:13
clintar: what php debs (I think I asked this earlier, sorry if I didn't)
Southern_Gentlem 2017-02-01 08:51:14
Fritigern, gimp can do circular test
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:51:20
nauticalnexus: Steven Barrett and heftig, the current linux-zen developers are only working on the latest linux stable branch and so does Con. This means that getting it to work on the ubuntu lts kernel is going to be a pain in the ass and will require you to know how to program. More pain than reward. Also if you go for such kernels backporting to the latest ubuntu lts makes no sense due that the lts kernel mainly contains back

clintar 2017-02-01 08:52:35

clintar 2017-02-01 08:53:07

nacc 2017-02-01 08:53:47
guest234862: it's specific to debian releases. (sid/unstable). No ubuntu release repository.
Fritigern 2017-02-01 08:54:00
Southern_Gentlem: Thank you, watching the vid now!
nacc 2017-02-01 08:54:09
guest234862: i don't care abot their claims of 'binary compatibility', their kernel base is totally different (afaict) from the ubuntu one.
nacc 2017-02-01 08:55:10
clintar: and why do you want a deb if you normally build form source? are you planning on submitting this to debian/ubuntu?
clintar 2017-02-01 08:56:01
nacc, i'm open to other options, but afaik, i have to match up with what's running on the system
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:56:19
nacc: i am just stating that you are making a thinking error. It is not for Sid, it is *from* Sid (hence the Sid in the sources.list). Their web page does not say that it is only for sid. In other words, there are changes backported to the stable kernel that make the kernel there different from the same version in Sid, but this does not apply ...
nacc 2017-02-01 08:57:51
clintar: why can't you just download the tar and install it?
clintar 2017-02-01 08:58:06
tar of php?
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:58:24
nacc: plus the author states on the liqourix page that is also is compiled for ubuntu
guest234862 2017-02-01 08:58:39
.. like literally on the home page
nacc 2017-02-01 08:58:47
clintar: the link you provided is has a 'download' link to a tarball for that driver?
clintar 2017-02-01 08:59:05
nacc, or if you mean the tar from that page, you need to compile the extension
nacc 2017-02-01 08:59:17
clintar: right, why can't you do that?
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 08:59:33
Hi, I just installed lubuntu on an old thinkpad and apt has no repositories
clintar 2017-02-01 09:00:12
nacc it uses the php sources to do that, so I had it in my mind that I should use however ubuntu's php packages are configured, but if there is a way to not do that, i'm fine with it
k1l 2017-02-01 09:00:13
Thedarkb: does "cat /etc/apt/sources.list" give you any output in terminal?
nacc 2017-02-01 09:00:36
guest234862: hrm, it *might* work, but ubuntu and debian generally may not be able to use the same kernel (compiler differences, minimally, esp. with the claim of 'latest Ubuntu')
nacc 2017-02-01 09:00:55
guest234862: in any case, i don't really care about liquorix.
nacc 2017-02-01 09:01:12
guest234862: you are right, they assert they support ubuntu and debian
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:01:27
Yeah, it gives me the standard spiel
nacc 2017-02-01 09:01:37
clintar: i assume you need php-dev to be installed?
nacc 2017-02-01 09:01:51
clintar: that lets you build against the php source, iirc
k1l 2017-02-01 09:02:24

ben@benthinkpad:~$ lsb_release -d Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:07:43
it's lubuntu
clintar 2017-02-01 09:07:44
nacc, i don't think this lends itself to doing it that way, but i'll read up on how to use php-dev and come back crying when i can't figure it out ;) thanks
nacc 2017-02-01 09:08:06
clintar: well if all you need is to build a new php driver, php-dev should be all you need, normally
k1l 2017-02-01 09:08:11
Thedarkb: did you run "sudo apt update"?
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:08:31
updating........
clintar 2017-02-01 09:09:03
nacc, what i'm seeing, you usually go into your extension directory and run ./configure, but this thing wants full sources and builds itself into php i think
clintar 2017-02-01 09:09:21
i'll try, though
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:09:25
I've been installing stuff by downloading .deb files from the debian website
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:09:42
and downloading dependencies individually
k1l 2017-02-01 09:09:43
Thedarkb: what? dont do that
ioria 2017-02-01 09:09:53
Thedarkb, not a good idea
k1l 2017-02-01 09:10:05
Thedarkb: use the ubuntu repos with apt. dont load debian packages since that brings you into the dependency hell
nacc 2017-02-01 09:10:07
clintar: right, you probably have to pass some flags (I'd guess) into configure, potentially
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:10:07
I know, it's agonisingly slow
k1l 2017-02-01 09:10:27
Thedarkb: then change your mirrors.
ioria 2017-02-01 09:10:35
Thedarkb, cat /etc/apt/sources.list | nc termbin.com 9999
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:10:48
I mean downloading everything individualy
k1l 2017-02-01 09:11:01
Thedarkb: you are not making any sense
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:11:09
sorry
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:11:14
I'm a linux retard
ioria 2017-02-01 09:11:20
Thedarkb, you don't need to do that
nacc 2017-02-01 09:11:24
Thedarkb: did you try to run `apt update` *before* installing anything?
ioria 2017-02-01 09:11:28
Thedarkb, all the point of apt
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:11:34
......no......
nacc 2017-02-01 09:11:44
Thedarkb: you have to, that's probably your issue.
nacc 2017-02-01 09:12:01
Thedarkb: and now you've probably mucked your system up a bit by installing (wrong distro) .debs by hand
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:12:04
On my last few installs, it just worked.
nacc 2017-02-01 09:12:17
Thedarkb: i would probably suggest reinstalling or at least uninstalling the stuff you installed by hand and installing from apt
k1l 2017-02-01 09:12:22
Thedarkb: what doesnt work? so far we only proved that everything works
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:12:40
apt was already working right from install
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:12:45
without an update
nacc 2017-02-01 09:12:53
Thedarkb: you *just* said apt wasn't working ... that was your original bug.
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:13:06
I know
ioria 2017-02-01 09:13:12
Thedarkb, please, paste cat /etc/apt/sources.list | nc termbin.com 9999
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:13:13
I'm a retard.
k1l 2017-02-01 09:13:14
Thedarkb: apt update gets the updated list of packages from the servers. you need to run that when adding universe repo
nacc 2017-02-01 09:13:17
you have to run `apt update` regularly
guest234862 2017-02-01 09:13:38
nacc well in worst case scenario a re-compile is needed. But generally the way the kernel is compiled and configured by the developer it moderately easy to provide cross-over and backported compatability. Also debian and ubuntu use the same patches when it comes down to devscripts, gcc, libncurses5-dev and libssl-dev, even if versions differ, higher versions of gcc provide compatabilty and the compiler flags used by the kernel
ioria 2017-02-01 09:13:48
Thedarkb, if you are on trusty, better sudo apt-get update
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:13:53
just updated now

ioria 2017-02-01 09:21:17
Thedarkb, do you remember the .debs you manually installed ?
kernello 2017-02-01 09:21:20
hello everyone, I'd like to back up all packages in their states and reinstall them in a new install of ubuntu. I found out about apt-clone here; https://askubuntu.com/questions/9135/how-to-backup-settings-and-list-of-installed-packages/486634#486634
clintar 2017-02-01 09:21:27
just apt-get remove those debs
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:21:36
yes, I fucked it didn't I
kernello 2017-02-01 09:21:38
but what am I gonna insert here: sudo apt-clone clone path-to/apt-clone-state-ubuntu-$(lsb_release -sr)-$(date +%F).tar.gz ?
clintar 2017-02-01 09:21:41
it's fixable
clintar 2017-02-01 09:21:45
you can still win!
Thedarkb 2017-02-01 09:21:54
I installed like 30 of them
