newbie22: running a command as sudo = root
ducasse 2017-03-09 09:49:05
newbie22: for all practical purposes, sudo _is_ root
MediocreN 2017-03-09 09:49:06
sudo su switches you to root
ppf 2017-03-09 09:49:13
snowkrash: what's it you really need?
newbie22 2017-03-09 09:49:50
Madiocren: I did not know that sudo su, switches you to root. I thought it would ask for a root password
pavlos 2017-03-09 09:49:53
newbie22, you could "try ubuntu" instead of installing
OerHeks 2017-03-09 09:50:05
dont use sudo su !!!!
snowkrash 2017-03-09 09:50:08
ppf, gpu pass with a nvidia gpu
dn1987p 2017-03-09 09:50:11
can anyone recommend me a good guideline (or anything similar) on howto upgrade a system properly?
ducasse 2017-03-09 09:50:18
newbie22: sudo -i gives you a root shell
OerHeks 2017-03-09 09:50:27
!sudo
ubottu 2017-03-09 09:50:27
sudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !pkexec (for older releases: !gksu and !kdesudo). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo

ppf, i want to get rid of this windows partition, it makes me crazy
snowkrash 2017-03-09 09:52:51
ppf, dont think you can help me on that one, can you?
newbie22 2017-03-09 09:53:18
Ok, thanks..
ppf 2017-03-09 09:53:20
i've not done it. but it's certainly possible
snowkrash 2017-03-09 09:54:02
i tried a lot ppf its almost working but the driver doesnt work out, i already invested lots of work i think a fake vendor id could solve it
snowkrash 2017-03-09 09:55:58
but thats not possible with that version of libvirt
logithack 2017-03-09 10:04:11
i've got a separate home partition formatted as ext4. its the first partition on my device. to make it accessible to windows, i need to format it as fat32. is there a way of converting my ext4 home partition to a fat32 home partition?
ducasse 2017-03-09 10:04:39
logithack: bad idea
ducasse 2017-03-09 10:05:16
logithack: fat32 is not a filesystem that supports unix permissions etc
logithack 2017-03-09 10:05:20
ducasse: what would you suggest to be able to access the files in the home partition from a windows machine?
ppf 2017-03-09 10:05:44
use ntfs
logithack 2017-03-09 10:06:21
does ntfs support unix permissions and so on?
MediocreN 2017-03-09 10:06:21
nope
ppf 2017-03-09 10:06:41
yes
ppf 2017-03-09 10:06:50
ntfs is posix compatible
MediocreN 2017-03-09 10:06:50
is it really?
texla 2017-03-09 10:06:50
Ubuntu-16.04.2 when i open program grub menu displays articles to boot..Ubuntu on /dev/sda6 and Linuxlite on /dev/sda3 to memtest info..Yet if I update-grub I am getting kernels 4.4.0-66 progressing down to 3.13.0-77 and two memtest
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:06:50
It's not a good idea to use a "foreign" file system (reverse engineered etc) for /home...
ppf 2017-03-09 10:06:56
alkisg: that's a fairly outdated claim
ZeEKz 2017-03-09 10:07:05
how can I get kali tools in ubuntu mate
logithack 2017-03-09 10:07:14
what would you suggest to be able to access the files in my home partition from a windows machine then?
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:07:16
ppf: have you seen any official documentation from ms? Nope, not yet. So no, not oudated.
ppf 2017-03-09 10:07:24
logithack: _if_ you share a partition with windows and linux make it ntfs
ppf 2017-03-09 10:07:32
but: you can't convert ext4 to ntfs
ducasse 2017-03-09 10:07:42
logithack: i would store them on a separate ntfs partition, not home, accessible to both
ppf 2017-03-09 10:07:51
and if your windows and linux are using different encodings things can get ugly fast
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:08:14
ppf, I've had my share of data loss with ntfs volumes, I don't consider it stable under Linux. If you want to reproduce it, just try to resize an ntfs partition with gparted, and move its left side; you'll get a whole lot of data corruption.
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:08:27
hi all
alex23 2017-03-09 10:08:39
hi kalle
alex23 2017-03-09 10:08:51
why have you choosen such name?
ppf 2017-03-09 10:08:53
alkisg: can you do the same thing on windows?
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:08:58
i'd need help with gnome on zorinos
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:09:00
ppf, of course

logithack 2017-03-09 10:09:01
probably i should be a bit clearer on my setup: i've got ubuntu installed as a persistent live system on a usb drive. 1st partition is /home ext4, 2nd partition is / ext4. the reason /home is the first is i was intending from the beginning to make /home accessible from windows, and since windows can only read the first parition on a usb stick, i had to make /home the first.
logithack 2017-03-09 10:09:16
now the only thing thats still preventing me from accessing the /home drive from windows is the file system
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:09:22
thats my name...thats why I chose it
ducasse 2017-03-09 10:09:22
__kalle__: ask their support, we only support ubuntu
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:09:24
lol
logithack 2017-03-09 10:09:26
so i need to change it to something wdnows can read, too
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:09:39
it is a ubuntu spin off
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:09:54
well ... it is based on ubuntu
ducasse 2017-03-09 10:09:54
__kalle__: still not ubuntu.
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:09:59
right
k1l_ 2017-03-09 10:10:02
__kalle__: zorin has their own support. see their website where to ask them
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:10:11
logithack: I agree with ducasse, use ext4 for /home and also use another ntfs partition that is common to both of them, but not for /home. If you really need /home readable from windows, there's an ext4 driver for windows.
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:10:14
thanks
ppf 2017-03-09 10:10:14
logithack: then do what ducasse said
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:10:38
i would ask them but nobody is active in irc...
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:10:42
anyway
alex23 2017-03-09 10:10:59
__kalle__: cause your name is kalle, it sounds too finnish estonian :)
logithack 2017-03-09 10:11:00
so you mean keep /home formatted as ext4 and create a new ntfs partition? or am i not understanding something
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:11:08
Yes
k1l_ 2017-03-09 10:11:08
__kalle__: well, if support is important to you choose a OS that offers the support you want
alex23 2017-03-09 10:11:24
and what is your question
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:11:24
ok ok
alex23 2017-03-09 10:11:38
you can ask in #linux
__kalle__ 2017-03-09 10:11:54
alex... I think this is also a ubuntu subject
logithack 2017-03-09 10:13:47
alkisg: well, as said the system is a persistent live system on a usb drive, whcih means i wanna be able to access my files from any windows pc without modifying it before.
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:13:55
logithack: it's even possible to automatically mount e.g. C: to /media/user, and then symlink the linux Documents to Windows' Documents folder; just don't symlink all of /home/username, because it also contains special folders that need permissions etc
texla 2017-03-09 10:14:01
Ubuntu-16.04.2 when i open program grub menu displays articles to boot..Ubuntu on /dev/sda6 and Linuxlite on /dev/sda3 to memtest info..Yet if I update-grub I am getting kernels 4.4.0-66 progressing down to 3.13.0-77 and two memtest
logithack 2017-03-09 10:14:18
if i wanna boot linux from the usb, i wanna be able to boot it, and if i just wanna use the very same usb stick as a data drive to plug into a windows machine, i wanna be able to do that.
sagaserver 2017-03-09 10:14:19
good day all^^
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:14:27
logithack: ah, I didn't see that part, I came after that. Then yeah just make an ntfs partition.
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:14:33
(an additional)
logithack 2017-03-09 10:14:42
alkisg: right. thanks for the help!
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:15:17
logithack: if you create the first partition as fat32, it'll even be bootable from uefi systems; you might prefer that over ntfs. That's how I have my stick.
vlt 2017-03-09 10:15:22
Hello! On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS we could run an Xvnc session and use Alt+Tab to switch between windows. Doing the same on 16.04 leads to the strange behaviour that I can only switch to the very next window, not to others. I can see their icons but not Alt+Tab there. Any idea how to fix this? It drives me crazy.
logithack 2017-03-09 10:15:25
alkisg: another thing i've thought about: perhaps there are some portable windows tools i could put on the ntfs drive allowing me to read files directly from my /home partition?
sagaserver 2017-03-09 10:15:25
good day all^may i ask something here?i cant login to gnome desktop but i can login to unity
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:16:09
logithack: I haven't used windows since 2008 when I moved to linux; you'd have to ask in ##windows for that. I know there's an ext4 driver but I don't know if it needs installation + restart.
logithack 2017-03-09 10:16:51
alkisg: the fat32 option you mentioned: if i create the first partition as fat32, then /home will be my first partition. i cant boot from /home, can i?
logithack 2017-03-09 10:17:10
in your case, the fat32 would also have to have some boot media on it, wouldnt it?
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:17:18
logithack: there's no such limitation, you can boot from the second partition without issues.
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:17:32
grub goes in mbr, so not in partition 0
alkisg 2017-03-09 10:17:43
efi writes files in fat32 volume

hey guys
Techknight 2017-03-09 10:34:05
hey
Epx998 2017-03-09 10:34:05
Techknight: what version of puppetmaster are you using?
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:34:11
if there's windows installed on one hard drive and another one completely free
scottjl 2017-03-09 10:34:19
Epx998: he's using ansible he said
Epx998 2017-03-09 10:34:26
my bad
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:34:27
in order to install ubuntu on the empty hard-drive and have grub give you the choice between windows and ubuntu?
Techknight 2017-03-09 10:34:29
Epx998: the one called ansible :D
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:34:29
how would yo udo that?
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:34:38
basically dual-boot with the operating systems on different hard-drives
scottjl 2017-03-09 10:34:50
i'm running puppet 4, with foreman and katello
Ben64 2017-03-09 10:34:55
PCatinean: by installing ubuntu
Epx998 2017-03-09 10:35:02
oh dear foreman.
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:35:03
and the bootloader?
Ben64 2017-03-09 10:35:07
PCatinean: yep it works
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:35:27
I mean should I install the bootloader on the one where windows is
ethan-43m 2017-03-09 10:35:30
hi how someone can configure siano tvtuner for ubuntu?
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:35:31
or on the one where I install ubuntu?
Ben64 2017-03-09 10:35:35
either
Ben64 2017-03-09 10:35:46
i'd do ubuntu drive though
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:38:35
ok
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:40:40
Ben64, and how do you install it because there's no easy option like "install on this hdd"
PCatinean 2017-03-09 10:41:47
you need to make the partitions yourself, and that's horrible
Ben64 2017-03-09 10:41:47
you could take the windows drive out or just make them yourself, it's not horrible
MediocreN 2017-03-09 10:41:47
Kind of a random question anyone have a good backup solution for incremental + image backups?
