hello, I have the following situation: I have no internet connection at my house, and I want to update my repositories information (just the packages info, not to upgrade them), so then I can select from synaptics which pacakges to upgrade or install. How would I accomplish this?
sintre 2017-03-08 10:59:45
to update you need an internet connection
sintre 2017-03-08 10:59:45
just like to upgrade
ersoul 2017-03-08 10:59:45
I forgot to say: to accomplish this through the usb memory
sintre 2017-03-08 10:59:45
sounds like a waste of time mission
sintre 2017-03-08 10:59:45
because you'd still need internet to get the files
sintre 2017-03-08 11:00:01
if it was some how macgyver able to do
ersoul 2017-03-08 11:00:01
Right, but I have internet on my university.
ersoul 2017-03-08 11:00:11
*at my university
sintre 2017-03-08 11:00:11
drag you pc over to somebodies house that has internet
sintre 2017-03-08 11:00:21
notebook pc or desktop
sintre 2017-03-08 11:00:53
drag either or there to campus , your paying for the internet
ersoul 2017-03-08 11:00:56
its a desktop.
sintre 2017-03-08 11:01:09
just take a keyboard mouse and the tower
sintre 2017-03-08 11:01:18
go to some cyber barissta
sintre 2017-03-08 11:01:25
and just get to work lol
sintre 2017-03-08 11:01:53
easier than expoecting someone hereto spend hours trying to figure out some covert usb version way
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:02:07
hello room
ersoul 2017-03-08 11:02:30
damn, thats sad xD
ersoul 2017-03-08 11:02:34
well, thanks anyway...
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:02:41
can anyone tell me how to access my /root dir on 14.04 using live CD.
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:02:56
it has filled up and i need to clean it and i cannot get my system to boot
sintre 2017-03-08 11:04:13
ersoul > not to offend you but don't expect us to come up with some bizaree solution to your get in your car and do it
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:04:38
sintre, he is gone
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:04:41
sintre, there are solutions, and your sarcasm is out of place here
sintre 2017-03-08 11:05:13
so 20 minute of effort on his part to go to his campus is worth hours of troubleshooting from other people?
sintre 2017-03-08 11:05:29
if i'm not welcome i'll leave
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:07:35
sintre, if you have nothing useful to say, then dont add here, we dont put a clock or conditions on support here
sintre 2017-03-08 11:08:14
actually bazhang i've done a nice job of troubleshooting people , i'd prefer THEM not to wste thier time as well
sintre 2017-03-08 11:08:15
again if i'm not welcome i won't assist in channel
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:08:33
sintre, that's fine; but dont push others out if you have no solutions
Bashing-om 2017-03-08 11:08:55
sintre: If you need to download Ubuntu packages using another machine or OS, check the desired packages in Synaptic and select File > Generate package download script. See also APTonCD .
Bashing-om 2017-03-08 11:08:59
See also: apt-cache show apt-offline <- apt-offline can fully update and upgrade an APT based distribution without connecting to the network .
sintre 2017-03-08 11:09:25
he said he had NO INTERNET ACCESS
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:09:27
not to mention sneakernet
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:09:48
sintre, yes, and there are plenty of solutions for that
sintre 2017-03-08 11:10:06
and that is magick internet?
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:10:26
sintre, you should have a read of the ubuntu help pages and wiki before responding in future
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:10:56
dont suppose i could become a better topic
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:11:20

`evl 2017-03-08 11:15:15

thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:16:37

Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:19:44
Hey, my cpu goes from 55 to 71 when working , 1~3 phpstorms, ff and chrome with multiple tabs . My laptop is being keepted above the ground about 10cm, was wondering if I would buy a cooling pad is there any chance that I can expect a increase in performance ?
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:20:28
kept*
`evl 2017-03-08 11:20:51
k1l, suggested to help access /root
stratocastorNM 2017-03-08 11:20:58
Might help keep a little cooler, wont affect performace. Could tear it apart and replace thermal paste, blow out any dust, etc
`evl 2017-03-08 11:21:22
^best responce Scoop7
bazhang 2017-03-08 11:21:29

stratocastorNM 2017-03-08 11:22:08

OerHeks 2017-03-08 11:23:06
Scoop7, sounds like normal temps to me
OerHeks 2017-03-08 11:23:52

stratocastorNM 2017-03-08 11:23:58

Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:27:39
it's realy geforce 840m, but I think the gpu doesn't play a role here
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:27:45
i think the 16.04 lts is unstable
`evl 2017-03-08 11:28:06
seems normal
`evl 2017-03-08 11:28:47
wait, no, i take that back, i recommend bazhang response now
`evl 2017-03-08 11:29:22

stratocastorNM 2017-03-08 11:29:50

stratocastorNM 2017-03-08 11:33:47

Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:34:03
OerHeks: but I also have 840m geforce gpu, maybe I should try to switch to it :?
`evl 2017-03-08 11:34:19
stratocastorNM, yea, my bad lol
`evl 2017-03-08 11:34:50
thesushimanoftao, have you used bleachbit/
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:35:42
only to scrub drives beyond comprehension. I am hoping i dont have to start over yet
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:36:34
do you guys also afraid to sudo apt-get update like me? :D
`evl 2017-03-08 11:36:35
bleachbit cleans the /tmp files for moany applications
`evl 2017-03-08 11:36:47
Scoop7, not on arch but ubuntu i was before i swithed lol
`evl 2017-03-08 11:37:09
dist-upgrade i assume you mean
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:37:17
yh dist
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:37:36
for the record i was using the software automatic update, i also do apt-get update
k1l 2017-03-08 11:37:48
Scoop7: "sudo apt update" will only get the list from the repos.
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:37:54
it was when i did not select all that things went wonky
`evl 2017-03-08 11:38:01
i wrote my own update script for ubuntu
k1l 2017-03-08 11:38:15
Scoop7: "sudo apt full-upgrade" will install the new updates, that were found on the repos.
OerHeks 2017-03-08 11:38:24
thesushimanoftao, then fix it
k1l 2017-03-08 11:38:30
Scoop7: and apt will not bring you from 16.04 to 16.10 on ubuntu.
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:38:58
Herr Oer guten abend
nacc 2017-03-08 11:39:13
Scoop7: dist-upgrade isn't a release change, and isn't really needed anymore (as k1l is saying)
nacc 2017-03-08 11:39:25
`evl: why would you do that?
thesushimanoftao 2017-03-08 11:39:30
i am working on fixing it now, thank you to the many
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:39:35
i am afraid it might mess any dependencies with my drivers or softwares for e.g. I am worry that my laravel project could break :/
k1l 2017-03-08 11:40:14
Scoop7: ubuntu doesnt change the version of a project once its released.
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:40:44
Yeah one of the main reasons i switched from Bill
`evl 2017-03-08 11:40:49
k1l, isner a package ignore option?
`evl 2017-03-08 11:40:56
is n't
`evl 2017-03-08 11:41:05
there
`evl 2017-03-08 11:41:11
omg, keyboard
k1l 2017-03-08 11:42:10
`evl: you can manually hold packages, yes. but ubuntu only ships updates for security and heavy bugfix reasons. so the long run should be to install those updates.
`evl 2017-03-08 11:42:45
nacc my update script, was to for manual automation. it was to do all the actioans available automatically but only when i run the script
semitones 2017-03-08 11:42:45
hey is there a guide for setting up sensord for ubuntu server?
nacc 2017-03-08 11:42:45
`evl: there are two commands to run; did you really need to script them?
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:42:48
at the end win10 seemed like a annoying spyware/ad system with enforced updates and permission problems, forced restarts and on the other hand you couldn't last like 1 month without a restart on a win10 - mission impossible probably .....
`evl 2017-03-08 11:42:57
autoclean and autoremove was in my script
nacc 2017-03-08 11:43:20
`evl: autoclean on every update is ... overkill
`evl 2017-03-08 11:43:31
i only run it once a week
nacc 2017-03-08 11:43:34
`evl: autoremove is probaby reasonable, or you can just have unattended-upgrades do it for you
nacc 2017-03-08 11:43:45
`evl: you should be keeping your system up to date more often than once a week
`evl 2017-03-08 11:44:25
my script i only do once a week, forotherwise daily i mannually run update and upgrade
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:44:33
Q: how can I change first day of the week to monday?
nacc 2017-03-08 11:44:50
`evl: oh i see, sorry, that wasn't clear before :)
k1l 2017-03-08 11:44:51
Scoop7: where?
Scoop7 2017-03-08 11:44:52
I searched all the settings with no results....
