catbadger 2017-03-04 02:49:10

catbadger: Have you tried #docker-dev and #docker
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 02:50:08
Hello guys. I put a network card in the PCI slot. ifconfig doesn't see it but lspci does. I tried with another card and another slot and the result is the same. Am I doing something wrong?
catbadger 2017-03-04 02:50:58
dimisdas i will try docker-dev
anddam 2017-03-04 02:52:17
is there any advantage in using NFS in place of SSH for duplicity backup?
anddam 2017-03-04 02:52:30
whatsoever64839: missing driver?
anddam 2017-03-04 02:52:56
whatsoever64839: I'd check dmesg for occurencies of the card chipset
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 02:54:06
anddam: that commans returns a whole lot of lines
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 02:54:20
anddam: what do I have to look for?
lotuspsychje 2017-03-04 02:54:50
anddam: try ##networking perhaps
ducasse 2017-03-04 02:55:22
whatsoever64839: which ubuntu version are you on?
MonkeyDust 2017-03-04 02:55:27

ducasse: 16.04
ducasse 2017-03-04 02:56:37
whatsoever64839: what does lspci say about it?
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 02:57:04
ducasse: 03:05.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
ducasse 2017-03-04 02:58:59
whatsoever64839: does lspci -k list a module in use for it?
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 02:59:53
ducasse: Kernel driver in use: e1000 Kernel modules: e1000
ducasse 2017-03-04 03:00:37
whatsoever64839: and ifconfig lists nothing?
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:00:59
not for this device
llutz 2017-03-04 03:01:02
whatsoever64839: ifconfig -a
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:01:40
llutz: the -a flag actually makes it listed
llutz 2017-03-04 03:02:00
whatsoever64839: so its there, just down/not configured
anddam 2017-03-04 03:02:29
plot twist
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:02:57
llutz: how do I make it work?
llutz 2017-03-04 03:03:18
whatsoever64839: read "man ifconfig"
llutz 2017-03-04 03:03:27
whatsoever64839: or better, "man ip"
anddam 2017-03-04 03:03:56
btw what's the proper approach to figure what the appropriate driver module is for a certain hardware, going into kernel source?
akinode 2017-03-04 03:04:00
hey, I want to setup my claws-mail client on hotmail but I keep getting this error message: (claws-mail:2337): WARNING **: [15:02:43] IMAP error on imap-mail.outlook.com: connection refused
akinode 2017-03-04 03:04:19
does anyone know what that's about? did they change the address?
akinode 2017-03-04 03:04:40
I followed the instructions here: http://superuser.com/questions/71876/claws-mail-configuration-for-gmail-and-hotmail
lotuspsychje 2017-03-04 03:04:45
anddam: ubuntu drivers get recognized automaticly
llutz 2017-03-04 03:05:04
whatsoever64839: https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/network-configuration.html
lotuspsychje 2017-03-04 03:05:12
anddam: for some devices there's need to search driver manual
ducasse 2017-03-04 03:06:22
anddam: you can run modinfo on a module to see which devices it's for
anddam 2017-03-04 03:06:42
lotuspsychje: is that an ubuntu-specific feature? I thought it was just the kernel
lotuspsychje 2017-03-04 03:07:01
anddam: check also ubuntu-drivers from terminal
anddam 2017-03-04 03:07:30
ducasse: yea, I was wondering the opposite, tho', if you have some esotic hw how do you figure the proper module
anddam 2017-03-04 03:07:37
(without plugging it in and looking dmesg)
anddam 2017-03-04 03:07:45
lotuspsychje: I will, thanks
ducasse 2017-03-04 03:09:15
anddam: aiui, the kernel holds a list of what hw is supported by the modules it knows about, and loads the right one when the hw is available. there is no list as such stored on the filesystem, you'd need to use modinfo.
someone235 2017-03-04 03:11:37
Hi, I have a very strange behaviour. When I do "ping shippuden.co.il" in my ubuntu machine I see that the ip address is 104.27.142.42, and when I do the same with another machine, I get 104.27.143.42 . Someone knows what could cause it? The two machines are connected to the same wifi network. And I can't browse to the site with my ubuntu machine because I get the wrong IP address
craptalk 2017-03-04 03:12:12
i got this on my log http://termbin.com/vmt0. Is this somehow clue of why my ubuntu-gnome failed after hibernation?
craptalk 2017-03-04 03:12:17
please help

i am running ubuntu-gnome 16.04 LTS
ducasse 2017-03-04 03:12:48
someone235: both addresses are assigned to that hostname, you get one at random
MonkeyDust 2017-03-04 03:13:21
someone235 google, too, has more than one ip address, it's not unusual
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:13:44
llutz: I added the interface in /etc/network/interfaces and rebooted but it doesn't work

llutz 2017-03-04 03:15:24
whatsoever64839: "doesn't work" is not a usefull error explanation
ducasse 2017-03-04 03:15:28
craptalk: just doing 'dmesg | grep error | nc termbin.com 9999' is useless as it leaves out tons of info. there's no context there.
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:16:06
llutz: same as before, it's not recognized, but I did just what the guide says
ducasse 2017-03-04 03:16:22

cnnx 2017-03-04 03:27:28
on 16.04.2 lts
compdoc 2017-03-04 03:28:07
there is no root account, unless you give it a password
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:28:28
i did
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:28:37
let me check /etc/passwd
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:28:51
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:28:54
looks fine
compdoc 2017-03-04 03:29:19
ca you logon as root on the console? youre talking about ssh
compdoc 2017-03-04 03:29:30
can
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:29:37
let me go to the station
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:30:35
compdoc: no, local root login doesnt work either
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:30:44
so its not an sshd config issue
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:31:12
only way i can root is ssh as my user then sudo to it
llutz 2017-03-04 03:31:27
cnnx: thats the intended way
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:31:36
i guess i prefer getting straight into it
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:31:38
cnnx: did you add AllowUsers string?
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:31:45
whatsoever64839: in which file?
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:31:51
sshd_config
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:31:54
no
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:32:06
but its not working locally either
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:32:09
so i dontg think its that
llutz 2017-03-04 03:32:23
cnnx: the root account is locked by default
compdoc 2017-03-04 03:32:25
there are sites that show you how to enable the root account, but this is ubuntu and the root account wasnt enbled by design. bad idea to mess with it
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:32:36
not a big deal then
cnnx 2017-03-04 03:32:38
i'll leave it
whatsoever64839 2017-03-04 03:33:02
cnnx: sudo passwd (enter new password)
