#ubuntu channel featuring ducasse, BluesKaj, kkunji, ignacio, EriC^^, masos, and 19 others.

ppf 2017-03-05 02:46:11
MonkeyDust: the channel is usually rather barren over the weekend and during CET daytime
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:46:52
hello?
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:47:28
hi?
MonkeyDust 2017-03-05 02:48:01
chris___ this is the ubuntu support channel, ask your ubuntu question
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:48:40
alright, this may take a moment to type Im a little bad at it
MonkeyDust 2017-03-05 02:48:50
chris___ keep it in one line
WeiJunLi 2017-03-05 02:49:34
anyone who uses qemu vm that can help me?
WeiJunLi 2017-03-05 02:49:37
qemu # is dea.d
anddam 2017-03-05 02:49:44
in rhythmbox is there a way to delete a meta tag rather than having it as "Unkown"
anddam 2017-03-05 02:50:10
btw does "unkown" means it's not set at all? i.e. is it a representation issue and the metadata isn't actually there?
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:50:30
I'm installing ubuntu 16.04, onto a new win10 laptop, i can get it to boot but after i make a selection the screen flashes and goe black
MonkeyDust 2017-03-05 02:50:56
anddam i'm not familiar with rhythmbox, but there's EasyTag and PuddleTag
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:52:07
doesnt matter if i choose try ubuntu or install ubuntu, i get a split second with a _ in the top corner and then it goes black
anddam 2017-03-05 02:52:22
MonkeyDust: easytag requires an UbuntuOne account to install, never met such a requirement before…
anddam 2017-03-05 02:52:28
that's an odd feeling
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:53:08
the back light goes on and off a few times then it just stops
anddam 2017-03-05 02:53:20
chris___: try a non quiet boot and see where it hangs
chris___ 2017-03-05 02:53:36
how do i do that?
anddam 2017-03-05 02:54:42
from what you wrote I figure you reach grub menu, edit one of the entries and remote the quiet option
anddam 2017-03-05 02:55:02
there are ey hints in the menu, also someone is will likely give more detailed info
anddam 2017-03-05 02:57:12
s/ ey/ key/
__Myst__ 2017-03-05 02:59:18
mvvvv: Honestly I only have LTS because it's the first version I saw :)
masos 2017-03-05 02:59:39
hiya guys. why is an Ubuntu 16.10 LiveUSB bootable on one PC and non-bootable on another?
mvvvv 2017-03-05 02:59:48
__Myst__, If you use 17.10 you'll have a big update every 6 months
anddam 2017-03-05 03:00:25
MonkeyDust: btw using CLI didn't require an UbuntuOne account, while using Ubuntu Software did
__Myst__ 2017-03-05 03:00:47
mvvvv: Is that an objectively bad thing?
masos 2017-03-05 03:00:56
disabled Secure Boot on the second PC, still no luck
masos 2017-03-05 03:01:04
Fast Boot disabled, too
mvvvv 2017-03-05 03:01:38
__Myst__, this can be annoying as some softwares can change dramatically
masos 2017-03-05 03:02:56
I also wanted to enable Legacy Mode on the second PC, but there is no such an option in its UEFI
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:04:11
masos: how does it fail
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:04:12
saying "non-bootable" doesn't help
BluesKaj 2017-03-05 03:04:45
most UEFIs have a legacy mode unless it's BIOS only
masos 2017-03-05 03:05:23
BluesKaj: not the case, because it shows itself that it's UEFI
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:05:30
masos: how does it fail
anddam 2017-03-05 03:06:17
MonkeyDust: oh EasyTag is bad
__Myst__ 2017-03-05 03:06:29
mvvvv: I'm one who likes having the latest version of everything.. Should I switch to something with a rolling release?
mvvvv 2017-03-05 03:06:38
__Myst__, If you want to upgrade, follow "Upgrading from Ubuntu 16.10" procedure :https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ZestyZapus/ReleaseNotes
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:06:54
__Myst__: you will fail with everything then
__Myst__ 2017-03-05 03:07:01
ikonia: why?
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:07:11
__Myst__: your machine will be a constant rolling update of instability
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:07:14
ubuntu is not the distribution for you
masos 2017-03-05 03:07:16
ikonia: if I say non-bootable, I mean it acts like it. when using normal boot sequence in order "USB > Hard Drive", it boots from the hard drive. when trying to select boot override in UEFI, it just flashes black briefly and returns back to UEFI
mvvvv 2017-03-05 03:07:27
ikonia, bullshit
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:07:32
mvvvv: please don't swear
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:07:43
mvvvv: if you can disagree without bad language, please do so
BluesKaj 2017-03-05 03:08:13
masos, does it have a BIOS Back Flash in Configuration? if so enable it
masos 2017-03-05 03:08:46
the same thing happens if there is just a couple of files on the USB and it was not created as bootable
masos 2017-03-05 03:08:55
BluesKaj: okay, I'll try, brb
__Myst__ 2017-03-05 03:11:54
I don't have update-manager?
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:12:26
__Myst__: what is your atual goal here
masos 2017-03-05 03:12:30
nah, not brb, I'll actually be able to try that in ~30 mins
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:12:39
__Myst__: if it's bleeding edge packages all the time, ubuntu is not the right distro for you
mvvvv 2017-03-05 03:13:51
__Myst__, The packages are official release (except for now as zesty it's a Release candidate)
hambloaten 2017-03-05 03:14:22
hello folks. is there an option in dovecot to slow down user requests on the network side of things? example: i want imap mailbox fetches to be under 100kbps or something similar ?
ignacio 2017-03-05 03:14:34
o/
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:14:52
What does one use to address an NFS drive with dd or the like? For a regular drive /dev/sda1 I'm looking for the equivalent for an NFS drive.
ppf 2017-03-05 03:16:20
kkunji: the drive is mounted to some folder in your fs
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:16:49
hambloaten: I don't think there is a throttle, there is a max fetch size, but I think thats the overall size of the request
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:16:58
ppf: Yeah, but I need to read it as a block device
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:17:11
kkunji: no you dno't
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:17:12
kkunji: what exactly are you trying to do
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:17:15
don't
hambloaten 2017-03-05 03:17:18
ikonia i can maybe tweak max fetch size. do you know the string off hand ?
hendrickscn 2017-03-05 03:17:30
hello
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:17:36
hambloaten: I don't know, the #dovecot guys will though
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:17:42
ikonia: I'm trying to recover an accidentally overwritten script T.T
ppf 2017-03-05 03:17:45
kkunji: it's not a block device
ppf 2017-03-05 03:17:49
no way to read it as one
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:17:59
kkunji: ok ? so why are you using dd and why do you need it to be a block device
hambloaten 2017-03-05 03:18:10
ikonia thanks. i'll try that and try rtfm performence pages too. thx
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:18:42
hambloaten: there is a couple of great chapters in the oreilly dovecot book
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:18:59
ikonia: I'm using grep actually, but examples are using e.g. /dev/sda1 if I give the folder I don't think it will find it, no?
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:19:22
kkunji: grep will work on a file system
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:19:26
kkunji: grep will not work on a block device
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:19:33
kkunji: so what you are saying is not making sense
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:19:59
ikonia: grep -i -a -B100 -A100 'parent_path' /dev/sda1 is the example that I'm seeing.
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:20:00
I'm trying to install Kubuntu, but about 5 seconds after the resolution changes, it crashes and SysRq+b doesn't work. nomodeset fixes this, but I can't just run in nomodeset forever. What should I do? Thanks!
janat08 2017-03-05 03:20:20

janat08 2017-03-05 03:20:38
How do I see what versions of sql I may have installed?
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:20:42
kkunji: how big is disk that has it? what filesystem?
masos 2017-03-05 03:21:01
r3muxd: did you mean *Alt*+SysRq+B instead of SysRq+B?
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:21:11
kkunji: I have no idea what /dev/sda1 is doing there
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:21:21
EriC^^: NFS and big T.T (13 TB)
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:21:37
yeah, I forgot what key it was so I held down alt, shift, winkey, and ctrl + sysrq+b.
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:21:42
ikonia: he's going through the partition looking for the actual data
masos 2017-03-05 03:21:44
ah ok
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:21:50
it perfectly works
ikonia 2017-03-05 03:22:19
EriC^^: he's grepping a block device for a string ?
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:22:25
kkunji: you could possibly use photorec and give it a the header your script had and it will retrieve the files
ppf 2017-03-05 03:22:39
not via nfs
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:22:46
ikonia: yes, cause the file's been deleted so it's not in the filesystem per say, but in the partition
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:23:03
EriC^^: why not just use testdisk off a livecd then?
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:23:20
EriC^^: Exactly, but yeah, like ppf says, I'm not sure it can work over NFS
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:23:23
kkunji: how do you know the file will be within 100 lines above or below the parent path? is that a nfs thing?
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:23:52
r3muxd: cause testdisk is crap with ntfs, barely retrieves fat32
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:24:13
but do give it a shot kkunji , try testdisk first, press "p" over the partition to view the files and see if it can retrieve it
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:24:21
it's quick and easy
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:24:27
EriC^^: parent_path is some text in the file, then 2nd line I think, as first is the bin/bash line
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:24:28
huh. when I corrupted my partition table, it seemed to work fine.
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:24:46
and then if that fails, there's photorec...
ppf 2017-03-05 03:24:50
EriC^^: he's talking about nFs, not nTfs
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:24:53
r3muxd: partition table is different, it's great at that, he's trying to retrieve an actual deleted file
hendrickscn 2017-03-05 03:25:04
need for speed?
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:25:30
ppf: maybe I'm stupid, but isn't nfs a way to mount arbitrary filesystems over the network?
ppf 2017-03-05 03:25:41
r3muxd: yes, precisely
ppf 2017-03-05 03:25:46
you can't recover deleted files from that
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:26:08
ppf: but there is a filesystem somewhere though right?
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:26:12
ppf: wait, so doesn't that mean he should be trying to figure out what filesystem the partition actually uses?
EriC^^ 2017-03-05 03:26:26
he said ntfs above
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:26:53
EriC: No, I just said NFS, I'm not sure what is on the other side.
ppf 2017-03-05 03:26:54
kkunji: do you have access to the physical disk/partition
ppf 2017-03-05 03:27:11
that's where you can undelete stuff
ppf 2017-03-05 03:27:19
there's no way you can do it via nfs
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:27:32
ppf: I don't, but IT probably can.... remote data center, pain in the butt.
ppf 2017-03-05 03:28:01
kkunji: then you need to talk to your datacenter
ducasse 2017-03-05 03:28:07
kkunji: just recover whatever you deleted from backup
kkunji 2017-03-05 03:28:14
If it comes down to it I can write it again, just means having lost a few hours and kicking myself for not adding it to git last night
ezbali 2017-03-05 03:29:41
Hello. I am trying to remove/purge ssh-server & client. I want to get back to a default setting (internal network, user name+ password)and work my way from there
ppf 2017-03-05 03:29:45
EriC^^: sure, there are multiple layers of filesystems. but to undelete stuff you need the phyiscal partition
ezbali 2017-03-05 03:29:59
But try as I might, deleting, the keys keep being addedback
r3muxd 2017-03-05 03:32:14
so what should I do? everywhere I see recommends putting nomodeset as default, which doesn't really help.
ezbali 2017-03-05 03:32:14
I've deleted /etc/ssh, ssh_config, ~/.ssh, remove --purge server & client...where is that config info coming from?
masos 2017-03-05 03:32:14
@BluesKaj nah, there is no BIOS Back Flash in configuration, sadly
Apachez 2017-03-05 03:35:45

janat08 2017-03-05 03:36:35

masos, bummer :/

hi
Castor_Troy 2017-03-05 03:41:52
hi, how can i check if my home is in a partition or in a folder ?
janat08 2017-03-05 03:41:55
i'm getting error that suggests I upgrade, i got latest version, but maybe there's older one somewhere
ppf 2017-03-05 03:42:12
janat08: what's the error
dingel 2017-03-05 03:42:14
ubuntu 14.04 shows high iowait times
llutz 2017-03-05 03:42:44
Castor_Troy: "df /home /"
BluesKaj 2017-03-05 03:43:08
very starnge that there's no Legacy Support in your Boot Mode setup page, masos
Castor_Troy 2017-03-05 03:43:18
llutz, looks like its in a partition.

Hi, what kind of cables do I need to connect this motherboard https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C600/X10SRH-CF.cfm to the backplane of this chassis https://www.supermicro.com.tw/products/chassis/3U/836/SC836BE1C-R1K03B .... I have no idea whatsoever.. this is my first real server ever...
Castor_Troy 2017-03-05 03:43:44
i meantt /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda4
llutz 2017-03-05 03:43:50
Castor_Troy: if you get 2 different devices back, its on own partition
ducasse 2017-03-05 03:43:51
Castor_Troy: 'mountpoint /home'
bmattos 2017-03-05 03:44:05
I installed ubuntu and now i can't boot into windows, how could i add windows to the grub menu
Castor_Troy 2017-03-05 03:44:07
ducasse, /home is a mountpoint
ducasse 2017-03-05 03:44:22
Castor_Troy: then it is a partition
masos 2017-03-05 03:44:25
BluesKaj: I looked in every part of the configuration already like 10 times and still there is no such an option
Castor_Troy 2017-03-05 03:44:29
last time, i messed up something,, i wasn't able to get home partition...
Castor_Troy 2017-03-05 03:44:35
i lost my data. thats why i am curious
masos 2017-03-05 03:44:40

does encrypting /home partition slows down operations ?
