What would you guys suggest for movies spread out on multiple hard drives of varying sizes? mhddfs or lvm?
Menzador 2017-03-07 04:58:27
(Ignore the apparent redundancy)
OerHeks 2017-03-07 04:59:12
Aurorasaura, use the one you like best :-) this is just ubuntu support
Aurorasaura 2017-03-07 04:59:44
I know lol. Just wondering what would be best as far as reliability
Aurorasaura 2017-03-07 05:01:47
Thank you though :) Ill poke around in a few other rooms.
Aurorasaura 2017-03-07 05:05:09
And sorry about that. is there another Ubuntu channel for non support related stuff?
OerHeks 2017-03-07 05:05:48
Aurorasaura, #ubuntu-offtopic or #ubuntu-discuss, or use alis to search
OerHeks 2017-03-07 05:05:51
!alis
ubottu 2017-03-07 05:05:51
Alis is an IRC service to help you find channels. For help on using it, see "/msg Alis help list" or ask in #freenode. Example usage: "/msg Alis list http"

hi ppl
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:10:44
I'm trying to forward the port 80 to 8080 in order to let Tomcat work on that port. I'm running Ubuntu on VMWare. I read I have to use something like "iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 8080". From ifconfig I see that my main interface is called "ens33" instead of "eth0". I attempted to use that rule with both "ens33" and "eth0" as interface both Tomcat is still not accessible without indicating the :8080
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:10:45
port explicitly. Does anybody have any suggestion?
nacc 2017-03-07 05:12:54
Melatonina: why would you use eth0 as the interface if that is not a defined interface?
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:13:24
nacc: it was my first attempt. Then I checked and saw that the interface was called differently
nacc 2017-03-07 05:13:48
Melatonina: you may need to delete that rule if it's still present
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:13:49
nacc: I removed that rule, added a new rule but the result is still the same
nacc 2017-03-07 05:13:53
Melatonina: ah ok
craptalk 2017-03-07 05:14:26
i disabled hibernation on my machine due to error on resuming from it, but what action does the system take when the battery is out? since i disabled the hibernation?
craptalk 2017-03-07 05:14:54
is it going to be sleep mode or direct shutdown?
nacc 2017-03-07 05:15:00
craptalk: you mean when the battery dies? i assume it depends on your ocnfiguration
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:15:34
nacc: iptables now shows "REDIRECT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:http redir ports 8080"
craptalk 2017-03-07 05:16:48
nacc: yes, where can i find it? i did not find it on tweaktool or something
nacc 2017-03-07 05:16:50
craptalk: power settings or something?
nacc 2017-03-07 05:16:50
Melatonina: https://www.systutorials.com/816/port-forwarding-using-iptables/ ?
craptalk 2017-03-07 05:16:52
thre is no such config on tweaktool and power options
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:18:40
I fixed the thing, I had to add an OUTPUT rule: iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 8080
nacc 2017-03-07 05:19:10
craptalk: http://askubuntu.com/questions/195671/wont-hibernate-when-battery-critical seems to exist in dconf
Dr_Coke 2017-03-07 05:19:32
craptalk, lol, that is the best name man
Melatonina 2017-03-07 05:20:25
nacc: thanks. I fixed my main problem now. If I'll keep using this technology I'll read that link and maybe a book about the subject too. Thanks again!
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:39:36
is it possible to complete the ubunut minimal installation WITH partition encryption WITHOUT a /boot partition
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:40:20
Kingsy: no.
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:40:20
When you are doing it with EUFI you need to create a EFI parititon anyway, does this not replace the /boot partition or do you need both?
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:40:20
sorry I am new to this EFI stuff
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:40:22
if thats a stupid quesiton :)
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:40:37
Kingsy: you'll need both, the esp is /boot/efi
akik 2017-03-07 05:40:39
Kingsy: /boot/efi it's a separate partition
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:40:47
ahj ok
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:41:25
Kingsy: many/most other distros mount the esp at /boot, though, but not ubuntu.
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:42:03
Yeah for me they seem like they serve the same purpose?
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:42:41
Whats the sdifference between the data stored on each?
akik 2017-03-07 05:42:55
Kingsy: /boot/efi file system is fat32
akik 2017-03-07 05:44:45
or fat16 i don't know exactly
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Kingsy: the ubuntu way means kernels and initrd images are not stored on the esp
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:47:22
fat32
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Noooooo hehehe it didnt work again
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:47:22
oh, maybe it did.... I see grub anyway :)
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Kingsy: the installer by default needs a separate /boot to work, later you can migrate /boot to the main partition and modify grub to decrypt it
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:47:22
EriC^^: that wouild be super cool to figure out
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Kingsy: as for the efi partition, you can't do much about that, the bios needs to be able to read it to load the efi file, as far as i know
Kingsy 2017-03-07 05:47:22
never done anything like that before
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:47:22
no, encrypting the esp is not possible, unless you use the hw crypto stuff in modern disks.
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Kingsy: migrating /boot is easy, just copy the files somewhere, delete what's in /boot , unmount the /boot partition, comment out the line for mounting it in /etc/fstab , then copy the files back and edit /etc/default/grub and add a configuration line
user01 2017-03-07 05:47:22
hi can you successfully root samsung devices with heimdall on linux, or better to install wine and try to run odin?
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:47:22
user01: ask in ##android
Menzador 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Isn't it #android ?
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 05:47:22
Kingsy: this is the configuration line GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y
user01 2017-03-07 05:47:22
ducasse, ok they more know about linux apps got it
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:47:45
Menzador: maybe you're right, not certain.
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 05:48:41
Kingsy: then sudo update-grub and it's done, you'll have to enter the password twice though, once to decrypt it for grub to load its stuff, and the second time as usual, unless there's some hackery you can do to avoid the second one
Menzador 2017-03-07 05:48:56
ducasse: Yeah , #android is the official IRC home of AOSP
alexandre 2017-03-07 05:49:02
cadee
alexandre 2017-03-07 05:49:11
so bora
akik 2017-03-07 05:50:11
for luks you can have a keyfile which is used to open the encrypted partition
ducasse 2017-03-07 05:50:39
user01: looking at the list, you probably want #android-root
bigode 2017-03-07 05:52:56
Hello folks!
bigode 2017-03-07 05:53:43
Does Ubuntu install DVD have a hardware diagnostic tool?
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:53:56
just memtest86
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:54:04
which is helpful
bigode 2017-03-07 05:54:44
compdoc: to test memory then.
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:54:44
also, it has SMART
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:54:44
smartctl
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:54:44
to check your drive
bigode 2017-03-07 05:54:51
compdoc: because my comp is frizing from time to time. I suspect it is some hardware issue.
lotuspsychje 2017-03-07 05:55:17
!dmesg | bigode check your logs
ubottu 2017-03-07 05:55:17
bigode check your logs: dmesg is a console command which outputs the kernel ring buffer - an important log for diagnosing problems in Linux. Often when something errors with hardware it will result in additional lines reported which can be seen by running dmesg in a console.
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:55:29
bigode, could be ram, power supply, or hard drive. less likely, could be bad motherboard
bigode 2017-03-07 05:56:10
alright, thank you!
compdoc 2017-03-07 05:56:41
bigode. oh, be sure the fans are all running too
OerHeks 2017-03-07 05:58:58
sometimes you pc is just working hard, how do you tell it freeses?
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:00:08
EriC^^: thanks, not sure I want to enter my password in twice tho
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:00:08
so I might leave it
elichai2 2017-03-07 06:00:12
hi
elichai2 2017-03-07 06:00:35
i'm looking for an idea how to monitor reconnections on wifi
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:00:47
EriC^^: what is weird, if I reboot my PC, it doesnt work, I get a blanks creen, but then if I turn it off and back on again I see grub
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:00:50
what in the world
elichai2 2017-03-07 06:01:02
I thought maybe there's a way to make an alert or popup somehow when a specific word is inside dmesg
idgarad 2017-03-07 06:01:02
Question: With the Yakkety release there doesn't appear to be an iscsitarget package. What is the current toolset for iscsitarget management that I should be using?
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 06:01:30
Kingsy: that *is* odd
EriC^^ 2017-03-07 06:01:48
Kingsy: maybe it's not rebooting fully?
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:04:27
EriC^^: its 100% rebooting fully, I can get the boot order popup from UEFI before it hangs
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:05:04
Then I select EFI OS loader ... ubuntu... and it hangs
Kingsy 2017-03-07 06:05:18
off and on again and it loads straight into grub without the popup
Dead_ 2017-03-07 06:16:42
