good day
ed___ 2017-03-04 22:52:53
can anybody help with Ubuntu Linux 14.04.3?

ed___ 2017-03-04 22:56:21
just now updated packeges for ubuntu server 14.04.3 and now apache and mariadb is not launching properly.
cfhowlett 2017-03-04 22:57:19
current version should be 14.04.5 - sudo apt-get dist-upgrade will do the job
ed___ 2017-03-04 22:57:26
netstat shows that apache and mysqld are binding to tcp6 interface only, so no tcp4

BlooperDlooper 2017-03-04 23:15:22
hello, um, I am trying to forward X11 via ssh between two ubuntu boxes.
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:15:27
then use that output to search for a suitable debian driver
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:15:58
what that does is list your realtek wireless card, regardless you're going to have a fun time
BlooperDlooper 2017-03-04 23:16:12
I run ssh -CX user@host.local on my client and it connects, and I run `google-chrome' but Chrome then opens on my server machine in the X11 session running on there! Am I doing something stupid?
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:16:29
wifi can be a pain on linux at times no matter the distro
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:16:55
So I downloaded a gzipped tarball of a library I want to use, but after unzipping it, the folder that was created I am unable to access. It has permissions of 'drwx--S---', with a user of 130, and group of 144. What does this mean?
dx486 2017-03-04 23:16:56

BlooperDlooper 2017-03-04 23:18:07
I want to be able to expose my PC to the net and X11 forward my gui to a university computer, potentially
BlooperDlooper 2017-03-04 23:18:47
nvm, seems google chrome can only run on one X session at a time...
ducasse 2017-03-04 23:19:44
BlooperDlooper: if you want to access your full gui, use vnc or something similar
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:19:46
d_ven0m dude i would just chmod +x
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:20:01
or chmod 777 that file
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:20:37
that user and group restriction there is no way of telling exactly what it is just re-write the permissions so you can access the file
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:21:13
that i know of anyways*, a gid can be between 0 and 32k
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:21:27
digitalshiba: Okay I did that, I can now cd into the dir but cannot ls it. The S bit has now gone lowercase
geirha 2017-03-04 23:22:02
d_ven0m: The S means the setgid bit is set, but without the execute bit
geirha 2017-03-04 23:22:23
d_ven0m: You shouldn't have extracted the tar as root in the first place
anddam 2017-03-04 23:23:18
d_ven0m: likely you kept permissions while untarring, like tar -p
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:23:18
geirha: I thought I had to since I normally cannot do things inside of /usr/local without using sudo
anddam 2017-03-04 23:23:31
geirha: oh that too
anddam 2017-03-04 23:23:56
d_ven0m: you can extract as regular user, and put thing in place with su

d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:24:22
anddam: ah ok
anddam 2017-03-04 23:24:33
but yes, I think we're all on the same page here
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:24:52
anddam: I'll try re-extracting
anddam 2017-03-04 23:25:03
oh sh*t, I punched the 4TB external HDD
anddam 2017-03-04 23:25:52
after 20 years of failing drives I still have a sacred terror of "movable" mechanical disks
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:26:24
lol
anddam 2017-03-04 23:26:27
deep inside, I know punching them don't make them happy
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:26:41
i dropped my external like 4ft the otherday onto a hard office floor
anddam 2017-03-04 23:26:53
speaking of which, is there any advantage (like CPU-wise) in using NFS over ssh for deja-dup backup?
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:26:55
keeps on trucking like nothing ever happened :)
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:27:06
anddam: same, I recently just lost the last 7 years of my life because of a mechanical HDD
anddam 2017-03-04 23:27:17
hope so, I need to get a twin drive to duplicate this one
anddam 2017-03-04 23:27:28
it's running solo in a 2-bays box
anddam 2017-03-04 23:27:34
need to get a twin and put zfs there
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:27:51
anddam: I'm hoping to get to a forensic HDD specialist to attempt recovery of anything
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:28:18
dude just use atopsy
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:28:37
autopsy*
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:28:55
anddam: I has thus far refrained from powering it up to prevent the platters from moving at all but unless I can get someone to repair some data from the plates I'm screwed
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:29:17
like how wrecked is it?
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:29:30
dropped 3 ft onto tile wrecked
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:29:37
when you pick it up does it make 'tick' noises?
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:29:49
yeah it did when I attempted to boot it once
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:29:58
I immediately killed power and haven't touched it since
anddam 2017-03-04 23:30:36
d_ven0m: it depends how valuable the data are
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:30:36
I honestly don't have much hope
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:30:36
one trick for recovery you can try is freeze it first
anddam 2017-03-04 23:30:36
but IIRC a HDD recover service will cost under 1000 $
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:30:41
then attempt a backup using a forensic analysis tool
anddam 2017-03-04 23:30:52
ranging in the span of a several hundreds
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:30:59
I need someone to repair it
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:31:09
The drive is encrypted
anddam 2017-03-04 23:31:37
well they can extract the block content of the platters, I figure
anddam 2017-03-04 23:31:46
what kind of encryption is it?
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:31:48
that def complicates things
anddam 2017-03-04 23:32:05
is it builtin or at the OS level?
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:32:09
which makes me think it might not be possible to get the data back since loss of data with encryption makes it less likely to get anything back
anddam 2017-03-04 23:32:11
fs-level, it is
anddam 2017-03-04 23:32:32
d_ven0m: again, it depends how valuable the data are for you
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:32:43
yeah dude something that is encrypted restoring it is a pain
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:32:59
OS-level I believe and valuable would be subjective
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:33:18
It was OS X's drive encryption, whatever technology that is
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:33:29
if you can keep it very cold for an extended amount of time and access it using autopsy then it might be recoverable
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:34:04
I would pay for a forensic repair
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:34:15
you could even use diskdrill (which may give you results quicker) maybe not as effective
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:34:32
all a forensic company will do is use something like autopsy man
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:34:53
I don't want to attempt to power it because I'm afraid the platters will get even more corrupted
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:34:55
imo its better than what the cops use which is generally osf
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:35:39
bulk extractor works well too for forensic dives but is useless if it is encrypted
dkdms 2017-03-04 23:36:13
d_ven0m: you can use fakeroot to get the reasonable permissions
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:36:20
have you taken a look inside to see if anything is physically broken?
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:36:56
I don't have experience opening drives so I haven't. I'm worried I'll do more damage than anything
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:37:26
if the head is just kind of coasting and occasionally hitting a platter freezing the drive tightens things up :)
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:37:38
kind of quick and dirty but it works
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:38:02
I have no idea what it is, I do remember the one time I tried to start it back up it was "ticking"
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:38:41
okay probably the head skipping usually what that ticking is
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:38:48
It was also attempting to spool up but would slow back down and repeat as well
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:38:57
either skipping or the arm is having issues
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:39:13
I didn't leave it long because I was afraid continuing to let it run would cause more corruption
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:39:24
ah okay if its doing that its probably the arm the actual data is probably fine
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:40:12
digitalshiba: What would be the best course of action then?
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:41:25
well...depends on if you feel like opening it up
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:42:19
here is an exact example of what I think might be going on
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:42:23
a misaligned head
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:42:36
or stuck head
d_ven0m 2017-03-04 23:42:41
For me, that would depend on how dangerous it would be to do... e.g. how easy it would be to further damage or corrupt the data any more than it currently could be
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:42:55
https://youtu.be/F5Y7BniaRXg?t=300
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:44:26
thats fairly difficult to determine tbh if you are careful though I think it would be minimal at best
digitalshiba 2017-03-04 23:44:57
the only thing a recovery company can do is essentially what you can learn in a few youtube videos
