coffeeguy 2017-03-04 10:45:21
start from the beginning?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:45:33
i tried installing drivers for My stupid video card.... and it kept giving me an error about Xserver needing to be shut down. so i looked into how to shut down xserver
coffeeguy 2017-03-04 10:45:56
logout and login i would think
bekks 2017-03-04 10:46:01
patriotar15: And which card do you have, and which drivers did you try to install?
bekks 2017-03-04 10:46:10
login/logout will not stop the X server.
coffeeguy 2017-03-04 10:46:16
ok noted
bekks 2017-03-04 10:46:18
Shutting down the X server will.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:46:35
right ...
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:46:40
but x server seems to be running
bekks 2017-03-04 10:46:48
patriotar15: So you did not stop it.
esp 2017-03-04 10:47:10

patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:47:12

bekks 2017-03-04 10:47:18
patriotar15: How did you stop it?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:47:51
i ran init 3
bekks 2017-03-04 10:48:03
patriotar15: which Ubuntu do you use?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:48:14

patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:50:12
i may have hit ctrol alt f1
bekks 2017-03-04 10:51:16
patriotar15: So stop the lightdm and restart it.
bekks 2017-03-04 10:51:24
*lightdm service
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:51:45

patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:52:53
yes i have 16.04.2lts
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:53:37
ok so I typed "lightdm service"
bekks 2017-03-04 10:53:48
patriotar15: that wont work.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:53:59
display is still not showing any other supported resolutions other than that blasted 1024 by 768
bekks 2017-03-04 10:53:59
patriotar15: sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
bekks 2017-03-04 10:54:04
patriotar15: sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm start
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:54:49
ok
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:54:50
so it ummm
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:55:04

bekks 2017-03-04 10:55:31
So start the lightdm service again.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:55:56

S0bait 2017-03-04 10:56:04
Hi guys
patriotar15 2017-03-04 10:56:14
it wont let me type anything into it
joserc87 2017-03-04 10:56:30
Hi S0bait
bekks 2017-03-04 10:56:31
patriotar15: So press ctrl alt f1 and start the lightdm service.
S0bait 2017-03-04 10:56:44
First ubuntu arm install, i login with ubuntu, ubuntu as username and password, asked to change my password, but when i change it it doesnt change the password
S0bait 2017-03-04 10:58:27
What can i do?
joserc87 2017-03-04 10:59:03
S0bait: What is the error exactly?
bekks 2017-03-04 10:59:07
S0bait: Open a terminal, and just use passwd
S0bait 2017-03-04 10:59:32
bekks: how can i do that i cant even login
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:00:17
ok so i restarted lightdm service, back to desktop, checked display settings, still no other dresolutions
bekks 2017-03-04 11:01:37
patriotar15: How did you update your nvidia drivers?
bekks 2017-03-04 11:01:46
S0bait: you said you logged in?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:02:22

patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:02:43
it kept telling me that xserver was running
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:02:46
@bekks I have "ubuntu login:" i put in username and password and immediately asked to change the password as it has expired.
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:03:13
bekks: ^^ additionally, when I put in the password it just says an error and then refreshes the screen back to that.
bekks 2017-03-04 11:03:25
S0bait: WHICH error? :)
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:03:31
so when I tried that command again... and typed the whole /etc/init.d/lightdm stop/start
bekks 2017-03-04 11:03:53
patriotar15: stop stops it, then you install the driver, then you start lightdm.
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:04:32
bekks: "passwd: Authentication token manipulation error"
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:05:01
well when i did the start portion, it came up with this code.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:05:02
http://pastebin.com/7adeHTUA
bekks 2017-03-04 11:05:30
patriotar15: So do what it tells you to do.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:07:16
pastebin.com/Tqu0Js7k
bekks 2017-03-04 11:08:18
patriotar15: So what else did you do for breaking your X server?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:08:38
do i have to redownload xserver?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:08:53
remove it and replace?
Soyboy 2017-03-04 11:08:58
Hi, I have the Razer Blade Stealth with Ubuntu GNOME installed and when I close the lid, the laptop suspends, however when I reopen it, it continues to suspend every 5 seconds. I found a file that logs the lid state and on first boot it says it's open, but after I close the lid and open it again, it continues to report that it's closed. Any suggestions?
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:09:10
bekks: then it just turns the screen black and refreshed back to the ubuntu login prompt. If you are not sure i can take a picture?
bekks 2017-03-04 11:09:16
patriotar15: No.
bekks 2017-03-04 11:09:28
patriotar15: Thats not how things work on Linux.
bekks 2017-03-04 11:10:12
patriotar15: You need to uninstall the driver you installed, following the uninstallation guidelines in the documentation shipped with the driver.
Mathisen 2017-03-04 11:11:16
S0bait, reboot into recovery, then first " mount -o remount,rw / " then try to set a password " passwd whoever
bekks 2017-03-04 11:11:18
S0bait: Is that a new installation?

bekks 2017-03-04 11:11:50
patriotar15: I told you what to do already.
myk_ 2017-03-04 11:11:53
Is ubuntu a good choice for hosting static web apps? Wondering how hard securing nginx is...
bekks 2017-03-04 11:12:15
myk_: As hard as securing it on other linux distributions.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:12:30
the driver never installed, it kept telling me unable to install
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:12:38
bekks: Yes brand new installation. I have downloaded the .img file from the ubuntu website, and i have installed using the same image like 15 times now :P
bekks 2017-03-04 11:12:57
patriotar15: And still, you broke your X server.
bekks 2017-03-04 11:13:13
S0bait: Which hardware do you use?

bekks 2017-03-04 11:16:33
S0bait: I'd use this instead: https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-for-raspberry-pi-3/
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:17:15
bekks: what's the difference?
bekks 2017-03-04 11:17:24
S0bait: The link given works :D
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:17:55
HAHAHA
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:18:11
So just incase i miscommunicated, i was using this" ubuntu-16.04-preinstalled-server-armhf+raspi3.img"
S0bait 2017-03-04 11:18:14
i'll try that now.
Mathisen 2017-03-04 11:18:17
i would try booting into recovery first, your problem is most likely that you somehow managed to mount as read only
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:19:41
see the biggest issue I had with ubuntu, is the fact tha tit doesnt seem to support my video card at all when it boots up
bekks 2017-03-04 11:19:59
patriotar15: Then you wouldnt see anything.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:20:08
i have to type "nomodeset" everytime
blue_cheese 2017-03-04 11:20:11
Hullo
Mathisen 2017-03-04 11:20:16
patriotar15, what card ?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:20:25
gtx970
bekks 2017-03-04 11:20:29
patriotar15: You have to put that option into your grub config.
bekks 2017-03-04 11:20:40
!nomodeset | patriotar15

patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:21:09

bencc1 2017-03-04 11:21:45

patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:21:50
Im going to log into windows... format the linux drive... and just do a clean reinstall *Sighs*
bekks 2017-03-04 11:21:52
patriotar15: Please read the link given, it explains on how to configure your system so you dont have to type it everytime.
bekks 2017-03-04 11:22:06
patriotar15: you dont need windows for reinstalling linux.
rx-bad 2017-03-04 11:22:24
i cant install java
rx-bad 2017-03-04 11:22:31
i cant install java, pls help me
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:22:41
i do, since when i try to boot off of grub, it blanks out my screen... so i can't even run the installation media
bekks 2017-03-04 11:23:03
!java | rx-bad
ubottu 2017-03-04 11:23:04
rx-bad: To just use java you need a "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE) and/or a browser plugin. If that is not sufficient you will need a "Java Development Kit" (JDK) aka "Software Development Kit" (SDK). Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java about how to install one of three current implementations.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:23:08
it blanks my screen *AND* my screen shuts off due to no input
rx-bad 2017-03-04 11:23:38
thanks
bekks 2017-03-04 11:23:41
patriotar15: so put the nomodeset option into the kernel options when booting the installation medium.
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:24:44
ok... so .... i select the boot drive... and then what do I do immediately after that?
bekks 2017-03-04 11:25:12
patriotar15: Did you readthe link I just gave you? I doubt that :)
Jordan_U 2017-03-04 11:25:39
patriotar15: Are you booting via BIOS or via UEFI?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:31:48
i believe it is uefi,
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:31:52
bekks, I read the link... I missed the part about permanentizing the nomodeset
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:32:17
by missing it, i meant the other time i read that link before you linked me
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:35:07
so what is the best way to install nvidia drivers then?
patriotar15 2017-03-04 11:35:35
so i dont kill xserver next time?
