come on Linux why are things this way in 2016 :(
blackman2 2017-03-02 15:46:03
expelled something like 200 times through history, but it's never the fault of the jew bankers (laugh).

hi, i did apt-get upgrade and now i hear no sound through my speakers. the sound config looks good though http://pastebin.com/Fnv7zUcv
OerHeks 2017-03-02 15:48:13
same info as 2016
Spark 2017-03-02 15:48:13
any idea how to debug this?
rangergord 2017-03-02 15:48:34
OerHeks: regarding the 1st link, none of the guides are about how to add parameters to the command. I'll check out the 2nd link now.
OerHeks 2017-03-02 15:49:45
create your own launcher, in your /home/ or systemwide..

Spark 2017-03-02 15:51:36
hmm i'm not sure
Spark 2017-03-02 15:51:41
i'll try some other jacks though
bandit22 2017-03-02 15:52:07
why and where is ubuntu retrieving files from when installing?
bandit22 2017-03-02 15:52:44
what happens if you tell it to skip
Spark 2017-03-02 15:52:46
dimisdas: can you change hte port with pactl too?
Spark 2017-03-02 15:53:47
ah it's pacmd
rangergord 2017-03-02 15:53:47
OerHeks: I created a myapp.desktop file that runs "/usr/bin/code --disable-gpu", put it in ~/.local/share/application/myapp.desktop (where I see other .desktop files), logged out, logged back in, it doesn't appear.
rangergord 2017-03-02 15:54:06
OerHeks: I didn't have an icon to use though, so I deleted the Icon entry. I'll try again with an icon copied from a different launcher.

Spark: your configuration is for alsa not pulse audio right?
Spark 2017-03-02 15:56:21
i dunno it's the default
bandit22 2017-03-02 15:56:26
why is every thing not on DVD?
Spark 2017-03-02 15:56:28
i don't use gnome, if that's relevant
Spark 2017-03-02 15:56:55
i tried pacmd set-sink port for both available ports, but i didn't get sound on either. I did get a click in the headphones as i switched though, so something's plumbed in
rangergord 2017-03-02 15:57:06
OerHeks: none of those instructions worked.
dimisdas 2017-03-02 15:57:32
Spark: the configuration you linked is for Alsa. You can control it with alsa-mixer. Pulseaudio is different software

Isn't this a pretty typical task for a user? I mean Windows had this in Win95, didn't they? And past Unity releases had it, since the (out of date) wiki says to right-click a launcher entry to edit it.
Spark 2017-03-02 15:59:36
dimisdas: i put it in one of the ports at the back and it worked...

Countess_Bathory 2017-03-02 16:00:48
rangergord, maybe you can do one to suit your needs, example for making a chromium link: echo 'chromium-browser --incognito' > /home/user/chromium.sh ; chmod +x /home/user/chromium.sh hope that helps =)
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:01:44
I thought of launching a custom script, but when I came here I was hoping for the "correct way" which would end up with the correct application icon. But it doesn't seem like Unity supports this directly, so I'll go the custom script way. Thanks.
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:02:29
Should I be reporting these 2 issuse on the Unity bug tracker? 1) No way for user to customize locked entry, 2) .desktop files don't work, or their doc is incorrect, or it's too hard to mess up?
Countess_Bathory 2017-03-02 16:02:33
give it a custom icon , open it , right click lock to launcher ?
Spark 2017-03-02 16:04:14
dimisdas: i just adjusted the volume and it's gone dead again :(
Spark 2017-03-02 16:04:16
on both ports
dimisdas 2017-03-02 16:04:35
Use alsa-mixer
dimisdas 2017-03-02 16:04:41
To change port
Spark 2017-03-02 16:05:22
you mean alsamixer?
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:05:50
Countess_Bathory: I can't do that, it locks the code executable, without the script's parameters. And I can't click and drag the sh file to the Launcher.
dimisdas 2017-03-02 16:05:52
Yup
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:06:13
Countess_Bathory: I can't "Make Link" then drag the link to the Launcher either
Spark 2017-03-02 16:06:17
it doesn't seem to be available anymore
Spark 2017-03-02 16:06:47
there is alsamixergui, but that only knows about pulseaudio
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:06:49
rangergord: have you tried adding it (the script you make) to the desktop file?
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:07:17
tgm4883: no, I'll try now.

Spark 2017-03-02 16:10:21
yeah it works now... heh
Spark 2017-03-02 16:10:33
pulseaudio was failing at controlling the alsa mixer i guess
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:11:08
rangergord: did you really name your user, user1?
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:11:27

Spark 2017-03-02 16:11:43

tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:12:04
rangergord: did you run desktop-file-validate against it? Because I did and it threw some errors
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:12:12
tgm4883: no I did not. trying now.
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:12:43
aaah wait
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:13:53
I see the issue. The .desktop file doesn't add it to the launcher, it adds it to the searchable menu. So if I search for "vscode", it shows up.
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:14:00
but I can't lock that resulting script to the launcher
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:14:03
rangergord: ah yea
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:14:05
it locks the actual application only
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:14:12
which then runs without the necessary parameter (--disable-gpu)
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:14:56
rangergord: well at this point I'd look and see what the actual vscode desktop file looks like, copy that into your directory and then alter it a bit
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:14:57
so the thing to do now, is figuring out what files "lock to launcher" modifies, to be able to do that for my script, not just the application itself
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:15:36
rangergord: or fall back to instead of calling the script to call the actual executable again with the argument
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:15:52
rangergord: unfortunatly I don't run Unity anymore, so I can't help much further
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:17:07
tgm4883: I stopped a few years ago, but came back recently, figured it would have become more usable. Instead they removed even more customization options :/
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:17:40
this is literally the first Unity flavor I run in 4 years. I went to Mint, then Xubuntu, then Ubuntu MATE, then KDE Neon
tgm4883 2017-03-02 16:17:45
rangergord: most work is happening in Unity 8, Unity 7 is in maintenance mode
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:18:14
tgm4883: hopefully 2018.04 is the year of a desktop Ubuntu power users like
Countess_Bathory 2017-03-02 16:18:26
if link is put on the desktop it retains parameters , unlike the launcher
roliz 2017-03-02 16:19:39
help i am having issues with with ubuntu studio
roliz 2017-03-02 16:20:31
it is not connnecting to wifi
roliz 2017-03-02 16:21:30
i have tried going to additional drivers but it is not using them
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:21:33
Countess_Bathory: that's the final solution then, it works. Editing the actual code.desktop file in /usr/share/applications, then locking that to the launcher. Personally I don't see how it's any different from my custom .desktop file, but oh well.
roliz 2017-03-02 16:22:04
ok i will try thanks :{
rangergord 2017-03-02 16:22:36
are either of you running Unity 8? does it let you customize launcher entries, without having to resort to editing files in /usr/share/applications?
