Hi all.
xarvis 2017-03-01 06:56:05
I have an upstart script running
xarvis 2017-03-01 06:56:12
which is for a node server
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 06:56:24
k1l_, so I guess now it's good? I'll try :)

when I go to the directory where the application is based and run, node server.js

it works great, but when I run the `service myapp start`, the status is always stop/waiting
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 06:56:52
Is there any way to verify that the data on /dev/sdb matches /file/xxx.iso?
xarvis 2017-03-01 06:57:12
and when I try to do the `service myapp stop` it will show that there is no instance

any of you who have dug into replacement of visio in ubuntu?
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:32:53
hitman1, sometimes, disconnect/reconnect the sata cable inside the desktop (from disk drive to mb) may work
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:33:20
Apachez, have you tried dia?
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:33:57

hitman1 2017-03-01 07:34:41
k1l_, hardware failure - but why it happened ?
k1l_ 2017-03-01 07:35:09
hitman1: hardware fails. there doesnt need to be a reason.
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:35:15
lol
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:35:18
hitman1, unplug the sata connector from the mb, reconnect it to another sata slot and see if it boots and finds the disk
k1l_ 2017-03-01 07:35:38
could be a faulty powersupply, or cables. or disk. or mainboard.
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:36:51
k1l_ should I try to reconnect it as pavlos is suggesting ?
k1l_ 2017-03-01 07:37:03
hitman1: yes. worth a try
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:37:08
Or should I purchase new hard drive ?
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:37:36
hitman1, dust might be an issue ...
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:38:01
But what if I only have 1 sata slot ?
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:38:25
hitman1, then blow on the sata connector and mb, reconnect to the same sata slot
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:39:13
Ok I am trying and will tell you after 5-10 min. Thanks
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:40:29
hitman1, try another sata cable ... do we know the disk died? can you connect it external via a pata adapter and it should show up in the live cd
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:40:36
so, ubuntu 14.04, what user does apache run as by default?
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:40:53
it's not www-data, it seems, since that user didn't get created during install.
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:41:30
aotaointbin: that user should have been created if you installed with apt.
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:41:47
if you install from source or something else, well, that's all up to you then
craigbass76 2017-03-01 07:41:47
aotaointbin: really... I was on Mint 17, which I thought was equivalent of ub 14, and I had such a user.
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:42:03
pavlos, No don't know what PATA adapter is ?

pavlos 2017-03-01 07:42:41
hitman1, it's one of those adapters that allow you to connect an IDE/SATA drive external to a usb port
hitman1 2017-03-01 07:42:42
Eric^^, What to check in dmesg ??
Apachez 2017-03-01 07:42:43
pavlos: unfortunately it doesnt support importing nor exporting visio format
intense 2017-03-01 07:42:51
i need to change a setting before i boot into the system for the first time
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:42:59
and i don't see a www-data user in /etc/passwd nor /etc/shadow
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:42:59
aotaointbin: how did you install apache?
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:43:43
ansible script that installed apache2-mpm-worker using apt-get.
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:45:17
guessing your script didn't do everything it should have then
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:45:34
create a www-data user and group then, 33:33.
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:45:48
(not your script as in you created it, as in you ran it)
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:46:20
it did install apache2 (as a dependency for apache2-mdm-worker), though, according to dpkg log.
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:46:41
it didn't explicitly do any user management tasks, which is why i was asking if this package handled user creation itself.
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:46:45
www-data should have been created when apache2 was installed
pavlos 2017-03-01 07:46:50
Apachez, you can convert vsd (visio, proprietary) -> svg (vector graphics) and import http://dia-installer.de/vsd2svg/index.html.en
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 07:47:08
is user addition/deletion logged anywhere?
scottjl 2017-03-01 07:47:43
might be in messages, just grep www-data /var/log/*
Apachez 2017-03-01 07:48:16

frib 2017-03-01 08:01:37

scottjl 2017-03-01 08:01:43

Hi guy's, I was in Ubuntu 16.04 with a gqrx version build from sources, it was working well, I updated to 16.10 and now i have a problem. The software can't start because it requiered an OLDER library: gqrx: error while loading shared libraries: libboost_system.so.1.58.0 but me I have now : /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libboost_system.so.1.61.0
vlt 2017-03-01 08:04:44
Hello. Nearly everything on my Ubuntu 16.04 desktop is localized/translated, also Thunderbird but not its Lightning module. What do I need to install do get also that in my local language?
cyber37 2017-03-01 08:05:15
How to resolve this ? Maybe i have to install an older version of libboost ? But how to do it ? Libboost in installed with "apt-get install libboost-all-dev"
nacc 2017-03-01 08:05:51
cyber37: boost1.58 is not available in 16.10
nacc 2017-03-01 08:05:58
cyber37: you will need to rebuild it from source using the new liboost

okay, it turns out whoever provisioned this vm did something weird with www-data before apache was installed or anything.
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 08:08:01
scottjl: ah, maybe that's the issue...
tripkin 2017-03-01 08:08:14

Oops, wrong chan. But just in case you were wondering.,..
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 08:08:31
are you saying that the minimal install pre-creates www-data even with no apache?
scottjl 2017-03-01 08:08:57
aotaointbin: yes. i just spun up a 14.04 box. minimal install. no apache. yet www-data was present.
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 08:09:13
and that would suggest that apache install doesn't create www-data on its own, expecting it to already be there?

BluesKaj 2017-03-01 08:45:20
scottjl, think he has me on ignore :-)
carol3 2017-03-01 08:45:58
what are the differences between 16.04 and 16.10 ?
pavlos 2017-03-01 08:46:27
6 months ;)
scottjl 2017-03-01 08:46:30
16.04 is a LTS (long term support) release, 16.10 is a general release.
carol3 2017-03-01 08:46:56
no functional differences?
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 08:47:15
Hey y'all i'm having a problem with dd. I'm asking it to write an iso to a USB, but afterwards, the md5sums don't match up. Is that normal?
ducasse 2017-03-01 08:47:21
carol3: 16.04 is supported for 5 years, 16.10 for 9 months
scottjl 2017-03-01 08:47:40
well LTS releases update slower and are generally more stable, without getting all the latest/greatest updates/features.
carol3 2017-03-01 08:47:40
ducasse: ok, thx
greeter 2017-03-01 08:47:43
hmm, well i'll see if i can fix it, if not i'll be back...
andypaxo 2017-03-01 08:48:45
hello i have installed 16.04 onto Pi 3B and performed a "sudo rpi-update" and now i get a kernel module.load failed entry when booting. Can someone point me where to look to solve this please?
ducasse 2017-03-01 08:49:20
andypaxo: try #ubuntu-arm
BluesKaj 2017-03-01 08:50:06
andypaxo, joiin #raspberrypi chat
pavlos 2017-03-01 08:50:58
semitones_rex, md5sums should match

i installed desktop 14.04 on one system, and netboot server 14.04 on another, and then upgraded the server by adding Ubuntu Desktop to tasksel. however the netbooted system had inferior resolution. im thinking i need a display related package or maybe Xorg configuration. any other ideas?
intense 2017-03-01 08:55:38

carol3 2017-03-01 08:55:47
does ubuntu trace user activities?
ckrusher 2017-03-01 08:56:03
carol3: only if you ask it to
carol3 2017-03-01 08:56:34
so not per default, right?
ducasse 2017-03-01 08:56:48
intense: probably not a monitor issue, i'd suspect graphics driver first
scottjl 2017-03-01 08:56:56
carol3: no
ckrusher 2017-03-01 08:56:57
carol3: any reason you want me to answer the same question twice?
scottjl 2017-03-01 08:57:12
carol3: unless you count .history files

6 seconds in mine, but pointless discussion :)
frib 2017-03-01 09:04:46
how can I determine if i installed ubuntu in legacy or uefi mode?
ducasse 2017-03-01 09:05:49
frib: run 'ls /sys/firmware/efi' - if it returns anything you are in uefi mode
frib 2017-03-01 09:06:10
ducasse, is there a way if i am not currently booted on that disk?
ducasse 2017-03-01 09:06:55
frib: you can check the efi partition to see if ubuntu has installed an efi bootloader
frib 2017-03-01 09:07:03
ducasse, i didn't create an efi partition on it
frib 2017-03-01 09:07:12
just ext4 as /
croberts 2017-03-01 09:11:36
has anyone hit where they are using terminal sshed to a box and it just locks up, no broken pipe message or anything. ubuntu 16.04
pavlos 2017-03-01 09:18:53
frib, sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda (or whatever the device is
ckrusher 2017-03-01 09:20:34

ckrusher 2017-03-01 09:20:45

croberts 2017-03-01 09:22:47

cool ty

ducasse, i'm going to try using an image from a usb install
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 09:32:35
pavlos, is there a more reliable way than dd to copy the iso to the /dev/sdb? or is there a way to troubleshoot and find out why they do not match?
EriC^^ 2017-03-01 09:33:10
semitones_rex: iso to /dev/sdb wont match cause sdb will be larger probably
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 09:34:30
oh ok. thanks EriC^^ :)
pavlos 2017-03-01 09:34:41
semitones_rex, there is also ddrescue which shows progress and errors
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 09:34:55
So is there a way to at least find out if the beginning of the /dev matches the beginning of the iso?
semitones_rex 2017-03-01 09:35:52
I've been having trouble booting from this usb, so want to make sure it's writing ok

jason_- 2017-03-01 09:43:54
I can't login with lightdm. In my lightdm logs I have an error: modprobe: FATAL: Module i915 not found.
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:45:16
sounds like a gpu driver issue.
EriC^^ 2017-03-01 09:45:31
jason_-: try sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-extra-$(uname -r)
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:45:47
so, can you not 'login' or can you not start lightdm?
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:46:06
can't login
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:46:20
so lightdm loads fine, you get a login prompt fine, but then it's rejecting your credentials?
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:46:34
it accepts them but just goes back to the login screen
k1l_ 2017-03-01 09:46:44
jason_-: does guest account work?
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:46:44
(it's not the .Xauthority thing)
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:47:33
that's odd.
EriC^^ 2017-03-01 09:47:58
i915 module is in that package jason_-
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:48:04
okay I'm trying it
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:48:07
i mean, if you're seeing a graphical login screen, clearly i915 is there and loaded..
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:48:55
can you `lsmod | grep i915` from a console?
diogenes_ 2017-03-01 09:48:55
jason_-, you can also try rename .config folder
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:49:15
well I just ran the thing EriC^^ said
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:49:19

k1l_ 2017-03-01 09:49:44
jason_-: does guest account work?
k1l_ 2017-03-01 09:49:52
jason_-: if that works its not a driver issue
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:50:18
i mean, if he's seeing a graphical login prompt, then wouldn't that itself imply that it's not a driver issue?
k1l_ 2017-03-01 09:51:23
aotaointbin: no. its only basic 2d for that. for login ti needs 3d so the basic driver can serve the login screen
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:51:50
EriC^^, http://paste.ubuntu.com/24092388/ http://paste.ubuntu.com/24092389/
aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:51:53
didn't think lightdm would switch drivers between login prompt and full desktop.
jason_- 2017-03-01 09:51:55
(the second is greped for errors)
k1l_ 2017-03-01 09:52:07
but if he uses guest account and it works then we know its a user setting
k1l_ 2017-03-01 09:52:34
aotaointbin: it doesnt switch drivers. but the fallback drivers can serve 2d only loginscreens
erisontavares 2017-03-01 09:52:40
wow

aotaointbin 2017-03-01 09:53:32
interesting.

finexbeer 2017-03-01 10:21:04
hi
finexbeer 2017-03-01 10:21:21
is better 2gb of ram or 4gb ram
k1l_ 2017-03-01 10:22:08
finexbeer: the more the better
diogenes_ 2017-03-01 10:22:15

deepend 2017-03-01 10:22:29
how do I create a complete backup of a ubuntu install?
deepend 2017-03-01 10:22:40
use dd?
diogenes_ 2017-03-01 10:22:50
i asked him :)
deepend 2017-03-01 10:23:01
do i need to boot from a live usb or something for it to work?
finexbeer 2017-03-01 10:23:02
for a compiuter whit install ubuntu??
deepend 2017-03-01 10:23:22
yeah got an ubuntu install iwant to save the setup and all the files etc to an image
deepend 2017-03-01 10:23:27
then gonna nuke the install
deepend 2017-03-01 10:23:37
but want to be able to get it back just as it is at a later date
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:23:46
dd will be a byte level copy of the disk.
deepend 2017-03-01 10:23:54
of the partition, right?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:24:02
so if you have a comparable disk, just dd the whole source to a destination
k1l_ 2017-03-01 10:24:21
finexbeer: the more ram the machine has the better it is for the system. but ubuntu can run with 2gb or 4gb.
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:24:27
well disk (/dev/sda) or partition (/dev/sda1)
deepend 2017-03-01 10:24:29
but to create that, will I have to boot from a live usb?
deepend 2017-03-01 10:24:38
or can i just unmount the filesystem?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:24:48
if you do a dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb you would be able to boot from the copy disk.
deepend 2017-03-01 10:25:41
right but can I create that copy while the system is running?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:26:14
you could, but i wouldn't advise it. boot from a live disk and do the copy. if it's a large disk. it will take hours. even worse over usb
deepend 2017-03-01 10:26:48
okay thanks
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:27:25
you're doing a byte by byte copy.
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:27:53
do the full disk though, not partitions. if you're going to go the dd route
deepend 2017-03-01 10:28:08
how would you do that?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:28:31
dd if=/dev/sd(source disk) of=/dev/sd(dest disk)
helo 2017-03-01 10:28:34
i'm trying to install mariadb-server-10.1 without being prompted for the password for mariadb "root" user... i've tried set-selections and setting noninteractive frontend, but it still prompts
deepend 2017-03-01 10:29:26
so instead of /dev/sda1 you would use /dev/sda ?
frib 2017-03-01 10:29:35
i am trying to full install ubuntu to usb drive and make it efi bootable. can't seem to make it work, please help!
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:29:58
deepend: yes. you'd tell it the whole disk and not a single partition
deepend 2017-03-01 10:30:09
should I just use clonezilla for this?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:30:38
deepend: you could.
deepend 2017-03-01 10:30:53
alright that might be the simplest route
frib 2017-03-01 10:30:59
initially i was getting black screen but then i tried reinstalling and selecting "Do not use this partition" For the efi partition on my main disk ( i think it was interfering) and after that booting from the usb gave me grub rescue prompt
frib 2017-03-01 10:32:06
booting "From efi file" using the efi option that becomes available after installing to the usb has no boot options in it
finexbeer 2017-03-01 10:32:54
but is better buying a pc whit 2gb or 4gb
nacc 2017-03-01 10:33:12
finexbeer: you've been told already
k1l_ 2017-03-01 10:33:14
finexbeer: 4gb
LjL 2017-03-01 10:33:23
who buys a PC with 2GB RAM in 2017?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:33:23
finexbeer: bigger is better!
k1l_ 2017-03-01 10:33:27
finexbeer: or buy a pc with 20gb.
LjL 2017-03-01 10:33:43
4GB minimum, 8GB enough for most people, more than that, justified by specific needs
LjL 2017-03-01 10:34:04
2GB acceptable if buying a cheap netbook knowing its use cases will be extremely restricted
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:34:58
buy as much as you can afford, especially if you can't add to it later (fixed amount). more memory now extends the lifetime of using the system
compdoc 2017-03-01 10:35:50
my pc has 16G, and its enough

jnoob22 2017-03-01 10:40:12

ilmaisin 2017-03-01 10:41:07
k1l_: so no for manual testings?
scottjl 2017-03-01 10:41:23
well manual testing means it might not always work (as in your case)
ilmaisin 2017-03-01 10:41:34
jnoob22: some dependency conflicts
k1l_ 2017-03-01 10:41:40
