davidj 2017-03-01 18:45:10
Debian's no slackwhere. :p
Aliencristo 2017-03-01 18:45:14
I thought it'd be easier since HTML and php are way easier
davidj 2017-03-01 18:45:19
err, slackware. C'mon brain, you can do better.
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:46:17
II seem to have borked something after playing around with drivers on 16.04, when I get to the login screen the cursor blinks a few times, stops, and I'm unable to move the mouse at all. Any ideas?
lotuspsychje 2017-03-01 18:46:38
Ryan_: move back to a previous driver?
davidj 2017-03-01 18:46:48
Hm. @Ryan_ ctrl-alt f1 & restart lightdm. Does it fix it?
Aremis117 2017-03-01 18:46:50
slack is bae
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:48:23
davidj, it completely freezes up
guzzlefry 2017-03-01 18:48:55
oh
davidj 2017-03-01 18:48:58
Is that any time you hit the login screen, or only after a suspend?
guzzlefry 2017-03-01 18:49:02
lotuspsychje: https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26283/eng/SY_0052_ReleaseNotes.pdf Looks like a firmware issue. :)
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:49:11
Any time I hit the login screen
davidj 2017-03-01 18:49:24
:/ Yeah. I'd move back to previous drivers if you can.
davidj 2017-03-01 18:49:50
Someone else might be able advice on how to do that. First step'd be to get to a shell & apt-get remove your current drivers)
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:50:38
Appears it might not be completely frozen, but it sure as hell isn't responding to any input, the screen just timed out after a few minutes of being idle
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:51:13
Any way to list all drivers that are installed/
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:51:58
I've been at this for a few hours already and am running out of pudding, not a pleasant feeling
davidj 2017-03-01 18:52:24
Depends on graphics card.
davidj 2017-03-01 18:52:32
I'd do sudo apt list |grep nvidia in my case
davidj 2017-03-01 18:52:43
(This probably isn't right, gimme a few seconds to google)
davidj 2017-03-01 18:53:20
sudo apt list --installed | grep nvidia
davidj 2017-03-01 18:53:20
for ex.
davidj 2017-03-01 18:53:31
This is why I keep a spare computer around, sadly. For when I break my main one :)
Landeskog 2017-03-01 18:56:03
was wondering if someone could help me im pretty new to nix. Im tryin to get mesa12.1-dev on 16.04 i have a radeon r7 370 im told thats what people are using for steam games 100fps+ for some reason i dont see any additional video drivers just sudo ubuntu-drivers list
Landeskog 2017-03-01 18:56:03
intel-microcode
Landeskog 2017-03-01 18:56:28

Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:57:42
Not sure what's making me more angry, my driver issues or the shitty trackpad drivers on the laptop I'm using for research
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 18:57:47
Landeskog: AMD has gome full support for open source, there no longer is a proprietary driver . What you have in the kernel is what there is .
Landeskog 2017-03-01 18:58:46
i was told that mesa12.1-dev i should use for video drivers Bashing-om
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 18:59:06
davidj, possible it's an issue with xserver? Would it be advisable to remove all versions of xserver and install one?
davidj 2017-03-01 18:59:59
I wouldn't start there @Ryan_ — in my exp. it always comes down to graphics drivers.
davidj 2017-03-01 19:00:26
otoh, sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop can't hurt @Ryan_
gnomethrower 2017-03-01 19:01:31
Bashing-om: No more fglrx?
gnomethrower 2017-03-01 19:01:40
When did this happen?
Landeskog 2017-03-01 19:03:16
im to noob at nix and i cant figure out what i have to do to get mesa12.1-dev
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:04:30
Landeskog, are you looking to install that..?
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:04:34
apt-get install mesa12.1-dev
Landeskog 2017-03-01 19:04:48
u gotta be kidding me lol
Landeskog 2017-03-01 19:04:52
ty
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:05:26
davidj, now getting a shell when I boot
Landeskog 2017-03-01 19:05:50
E: Unable to locate package mesa12.1-dev

Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:06:12
davidj, so the thing is, the shell is at a very...appropriate resolution, so it appears as if there's some driver working
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:06:34
also when I enter my passphrase to unlock the disk at boot, it looks like(by the way it shows the graphic) that again, some driver is functioning
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:07:17
Landeskog: Ya got some more homework to do. See : http://theleftcoastgeek.net/index.php/categories/12-possible-amdgpu-pro-supported-gpus-by-the-end . Then consider ' apt show vulkan-utils ' .
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:08:50
yeah it's definitely displaying at my native resolution
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:09:29
so I can either call it quits and just be happy with what I have and use a terminal-based web browser and buy a single bullet because lets be honest here, that's all I'll need, or I can brave into the wild and see what I've done to do this
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:10:36
yeah there's definitely no X
Landeskog 2017-03-01 19:10:38
Bashing-om, i see my vid cardi nthat list and sorry for the dumb question but what is vulkan utils
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:11:07
Landeskog, https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/+package/vulkan-utils
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:12:14
Landeskog, if you're new to the whole nerd-OS scene I'd probably get well acquainted with Google, the more basic questions tend to get ignored/overlooked in here
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:13:10
Landeskog: AMD is working to lay another layer on top of amdpro driver . I "think" that is vulkam ?? // and looking to find your nesa package . what release are you on ?

ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:14:57
I need help with software updater. If I run the software updater I am getting a list of items to be updated. After I authenticate to update
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:15:38
I am getting a message "This requires installing packages from unauthenticated sources."
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:16:27
from there onwards it is getting stuck and not updating the software
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:16:33

Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:16:38
davidj, we have life! Removed and reinstalled x
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:16:56
(and reconfigured)
davidj 2017-03-01 19:16:58
woooo! :)
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:18:21
Landeskog: Not finding a match for mesa12.1-dev // this any help : " mesa-common-dev/xenial-updates 12.0.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 amd64 " ?
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:18:25
davidj, ok, Login screen is working but is now just throwing me back to login after entering my password
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:18:31
Better than before, shall do some research on this
davidj 2017-03-01 19:18:45
Hm.
davidj 2017-03-01 19:18:49
That's interesting.
davidj 2017-03-01 19:18:57
Rebooted? Cliche, but just asking.
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:18:59
I am getting a msg "This requires installing packages from unauthenticated sources." from software updater
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:19:16
davidj, Yep
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:20:14
Ryan_: Insure that "you" are authorized to access your desktop ' ls -al .ICEauthority .Xauthority ' .
Squarism 2017-03-01 19:20:17
17.04 is not LTS is it?
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:20:46
Bashing-om, haha....about that
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:21:24
Accidentally deleted them earlier
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:21:29
Ryan_: At the login screen key combo ctl+alt+F1 to gain a console interface .
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:21:33
Well, .xauthority
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:21:41
Ya i'm dropped into a shell now
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:22:25
Ryan_: .Xauthority should be recreated . one can touch and chmod the file if required .
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:22:37
done
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:22:47
Not familiar with getting out of the shell and back to login though
davidj 2017-03-01 19:23:04
ctrl-alt f1
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:23:05
Ryan_: try ctl+alt+F7 .
davidj 2017-03-01 19:23:06
it'll drop you to a shell
davidj 2017-03-01 19:23:08
Or that.
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:23:56
Ryan_: Generally the GUI runs in TTY7 .
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:24:20
Bashing-om, thank you, changed ownership on .Xauthority to my user and all is well now
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:25:11
Ryan_: 2 heads better than 1 .. even if this one is a goat's head :P
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:25:22
I am getting a msg "This requires installing packages from unauthenticated sources." from software updater and it is stuck does not update anything
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:25:22
haha yeah
davidj 2017-03-01 19:25:26
Fascinating Ryan_
davidj 2017-03-01 19:25:41
@ramsRambo Which context?
davidj 2017-03-01 19:25:45
That is, when?
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:27:42
ramsRambo: Pastebin for the channel ' sudo apt update ; sudo apt upgrade ' so we see the errors in context .
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:28:01
davidj, I am running ubuntu 14.01
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:28:18
I did end up installing a different open source driver, time to see if it makes a difference
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:29:26
Ryan_: Annnddd .. you did purge the old driver prior to installing the new nvidia driver , yes ?
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:30:43
Bashing-om, AMD, but yes, I believe so
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:30:44
Feels like things are much better now, not sure if the map that was playing on the game server is as intensive as the one I got when testing before tho, gonna check
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:31:27
Either way the less painful solutino here is probably just to install Windows or a better supported OS for the drivers/game and just boot int that to play
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:32:05
Ryan_: K ; :) .. just checking . What release is this as xenial kernel and above has no FGLRX anymore .
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:32:24
Bashing-om, ya 16.04 so no fglrx
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:32:48
performance is worlds better
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:33:01
Bashing-on, pastebin http://pastebin.com/HBSUE8NQ
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:33:12
Ryan_: That is a fact .. no FGLTX . Nostly what the kernel provides is what you have unless you have a new release card .
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:33:30
Bashing-om, pastebin http://pastebin.com/HBSUE8NQ
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:34:47
Bashing-om, I'm now using oibaf's drivers(https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers)
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:34:52
seeems they're signifigantly better
ramsRambo 2017-03-01 19:35:14
Bashing-om, how to update that expired key for mysql
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:38:24
ramsRambo: see: http://askubuntu.com/questions/884798/why-mysql-repository-key-suddenly-expired ; https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=85029 .
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:39:04
Ryan_: Several have reported good results from the PPA :)
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:40:54
Bashing-om, yeah, it seems good, I'm not looking for stellar performance but just consistent, with old drivers I couldn't even attain a playable environment in 800x600 and this GPU should be able to(theoretically, without caps) run CS:GO at around 600fps in something like 800x600
hateball 2017-03-01 19:42:23
Squarism: 17.04 will not be LTS, no
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:47:28
But at the very same time windows drivers for this GPU are borked in their own way with decoding video, and I don't seem to experience said problems on Linux drivers..so, Win some, lose some
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:50:20
Ryan_: What card is this ?
Ryan_ 2017-03-01 19:52:58
Bashing-om, radeon hd 6870
Bashing-om 2017-03-01 19:54:54
Ryan_: Pretty descent card .
hicoleri 2017-03-01 19:59:23
How do I connect to an openvpn based vpn? I'm trying to use a vpn service from vpngate.net (I'm aware I shouldn't be using a free vpn service. This is just for testing), using kvpnc, but it returns an error saying that the connection was refused. The nm-applet interface also refuses to connect as well.
hicoleri 2017-03-01 19:59:31
The L2TP based service from vpngate seems to work well on my android phone.
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:36:29
Hi. I'm getting these kernel panics when starting the ubuntu installer: https://imgur.com/a/F4jvJ Tried both 14.04 and 16.04. Any idea what this is?
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:37:08
I'm booting with the nolapic kernel parameter, if I boot without the screen just stays blank
alkisg 2017-03-01 20:37:44
markus-k: is this a usb stick or cd? does it work in other computers?
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:37:58
It's quite an old machine (2008ish) with two Xeon CPUs
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:38:14
USB stick. The stick works on other machines, also tried to rewrite it
alkisg 2017-03-01 20:38:52
How did you create the stick, which which software?
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:39:59
converted the ISO to raw and dd'ed it to the stick. But the stick is fine, installed multiple systems with it without any problems
Ben64 2017-03-01 20:40:30
converted the iso to raw?
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:40:30
Also ran the memtest86+, no errors
linuxlove 2017-03-01 20:40:39
hi guys
alkisg 2017-03-01 20:40:46
markus-k: What do you mean "converted the ISO to raw"?
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:42:37
alkisg: like this: http://askubuntu.com/a/382969/646919. This was also on the ubuntu website some time ago, can't find it anymore
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:42:53
Just dding the iso to the usb doesn't work iirc
Ben64 2017-03-01 20:43:04
are you installing onto a mac
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:43:31
No, some supermicro server
Ben64 2017-03-01 20:43:40
then don't do that
Ben64 2017-03-01 20:43:50
also, don't do that for mac probably either
elias_a 2017-03-01 20:44:09
markus-k: As alkisg said it would be good to know if the USB stick works in aome other computer.
markus-k 2017-03-01 20:44:39
elias_a: Yes, I installed 7 other machines from the same stick no problem
alkisg 2017-03-01 20:44:40
markus-k: the normal way is to just dd the iso to the usb and it should work
alkisg 2017-03-01 20:44:50
Without hdutil etc
