alkisg 2017-03-03 09:45:32
pentium4_ubuntu: it'll work if you don't install the xorg hwe stack. You can upgrade fully, but only with 14.04.1, not with 14.04.5.
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:45:47
ioria: I don't think it has a non-kms path, to work with nomodeset...
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:45:58
alkisg: i was typing "14.04.5?"
ioria 2017-03-03 09:45:59
alkisg, ok

markot: usb drivers are in the kernel now, there is an option to put in /etc/sysctl.conf but for the moment I forget the name of it
k1l 2017-03-03 09:48:39
finexbeer: this questions doesnt make sense. and we only deal with technical ubuntu issues in here.
mrhall 2017-03-03 09:48:40
hello someone know where can i download computer security from gollmann? Live free
ioria 2017-03-03 09:48:53
pentium4_ubuntu, this one : lubuntu-14.04-desktop-i386.iso
finexbeer 2017-03-03 09:48:57
ok sorry
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:49:12
Or 14.04.1, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/14.04.1/release/
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:49:20
not .1, .2....
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:49:31
.1 still has the original xorg, just includes some updates
k1l 2017-03-03 09:49:41
mrhall: no warez here
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:49:41
.2? .3? .4?
genii 2017-03-03 09:49:49
markot: usbcore.autosuspend=-1
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:49:56
pentium4_ubuntu: no, stick to .0 or to .1.
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:50:06
14.0 then ;)
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:50:11
pentium4_ubuntu: do you know the pci id of that card?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:50:29
no pci, integrated...
OerHeks 2017-03-03 09:50:56
mrhall, pay for it.
zoid 2017-03-03 09:51:04
oi! I'm having a weird issue with Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS. Whenever I login to my server I'm alerted to the number of packages that can be updated, and the number of those that are security updates. However for the past few weeks it says "7 packages can be updated. 7 updates are security updates." If I run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade it will still say 7 packages. For example today there were 23~ package updates available, after I
zoid 2017-03-03 09:51:04
updated it still said 7 were still available. How do I fix this?
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:51:05
pentium4_ubuntu: intergrated also have pci-ids, you can see it with lspci -nn -k | grep -A 2 VGA
genii 2017-03-03 09:51:13
markot: This can either be done in /etc/sysctl.conf or add it to /etc/default/grub as: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash usbcore.autosuspend=-1" and then sudo update-grub
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:51:28
alkisg: how to get a terminal?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:51:32
hirens?
markot 2017-03-03 09:51:54
genii: if I add it /etc/sysctl.conf, how to enforce it to use?
genii 2017-03-03 09:52:02
markot: reboot
klf 2017-03-03 09:52:02
pentium4_ubuntu, can you watch 1080P HD on your p4 without hickups?
OerHeks 2017-03-03 09:52:03
zoid, run apt full-upgrade
zoid 2017-03-03 09:52:15
I'll give that a shot, thanks OerHeks.
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:52:16
pentium4_ubuntu: you can boot in text mode if you want
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:52:23
klf: i haven't installed ubuntu yet
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:52:26
pentium4_ubuntu: or you can just wait until you download 14.04 :
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:52:42
alkisg: tell me how, its slooooowwww
markot 2017-03-03 09:52:42
genii: I see. So I add "usbcore.autosuspend=-1" anywhere in the file?
genii 2017-03-03 09:53:09
markot: Yes, on a line of it's own
zoid 2017-03-03 09:53:23
it worked!
zoid 2017-03-03 09:53:23
thanks OerHeks
markot 2017-03-03 09:53:23
genii: thanks. try that
genii 2017-03-03 09:53:51
markot: I'll be back and forth from my computer because at work. But please let me know your results.
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:53:52
pentium4_ubuntu: the quickest way would be to press f6 when booting the live cd, and type "init=/bin/bash" there where you tried nomodeset
OerHeks 2017-03-03 09:53:54
zoid, might be a kernel with that, too
markot 2017-03-03 09:54:14
genii: Yep. I'll let you know.
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:54:17
alkisg: on my way...
zoid 2017-03-03 09:54:33
I'll be right back, have to restart my VPS.
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:56:29

ioria 2017-03-03 09:57:29
pentium4_ubuntu, it should work, but i think you'll have screen resolution issues
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:58:05
ioria: define screen resolution issues
ioria 2017-03-03 09:58:17
pentium4_ubuntu, low resolution
zoid 2017-03-03 09:58:24
OerHeks, rebooted and everything is working gloriously. Thank you.
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:58:26
lower than 1024?
ioria 2017-03-03 09:58:32
pentium4_ubuntu, maybe
alkisg 2017-03-03 09:58:42
pentium4_ubuntu: when you typed init=/bin/bash, did you see a screen similar to this one? https://www.maketecheasier.com/assets/uploads/2009/12/ubuntukarmic-bootup-screen.png
OerHeks 2017-03-03 09:59:00

pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 09:59:42
alkisg: do you mean on 16.04 or in 14.04?
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:00:34
On 16.04
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:00:38
not by default, but i added it with advanced
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:00:52
14.04 kernel panic
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:01:34
pentium4_ubuntu: it sounds like you misttyped something...
ioria 2017-03-03 10:01:56
pentium4_ubuntu, for nomodeset, you just need to press f6
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:01:56
on 14.04 advanced command...nomodeset? remove quiet splash?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:02:16
ioria: and select it on a popup menu
ioria 2017-03-03 10:02:18
pentium4_ubuntu, sure
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:02:22
pentium4_wait, you downloaded 14.04.1 i386 and it gives you kernel panic?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:02:40
yes, but without any special setting, like nomodeset
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:02:47
14.04
ioria 2017-03-03 10:02:51
alkisg, i think he edite the kernel boot line wrongly
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:03:07
He said without any special setting...hmmm...
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:03:45
boot=casper integrity-check initrd=/casper/initrd.lz ---
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:03:55
may i add nomodeset or quiet or splash?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:04:03
(14.04)
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:04:14
pentium4_ubuntu: try first with initrd=/casper/initrd.lz init=/bin/bash
ioria 2017-03-03 10:04:20
pentium4_ubuntu, boot 14.04 and press f6 then select nomodest... that's it
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:04:24
If you don't get bash, there's no point in trying graphics
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:05:08
alkisg: trying
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:05:22

alkisg 2017-03-03 10:07:13
pentium4_ubuntu: if instead of init=/bin/bash, you put break=top, do you get a shell?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:08:05
should i remove boot=casper ?
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:08:32

alkisg 2017-03-03 10:10:19
pentium4_ubuntu: what's the kernel panic message?
genii 2017-03-03 10:10:30

pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:11:58
"burning" iso with rufus
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:12:06
before that tried unetbootin
markot 2017-03-03 10:12:17
genii: Thank for your help anyway! What do you think about the option disable UAS?
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:12:31
pentium4_ubuntu: do you have another PC to test that live usb stick on?
tukruic 2017-03-03 10:12:41
Hello, ive got weird problem, i cant start my laptop if i dont move ram around ; _ ; what could that be? i tried unplugging all, pressing power on for 30 seconds, nothing seems to help
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:12:43
sure...the one im typing
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:12:54
and another!
tukruic 2017-03-03 10:13:14
what steps should i take to determine problem? :x
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:13:17
but, TBH, i dont think its a usb issue...
tukruic 2017-03-03 10:13:35
determine what's the problem*
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:14:03
pentium4_ubuntu: can you test the things we said, in this pc? I.e. both test that the live usb stick works, and that init=/bin/bash gives you a shell
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:14:11
hirens boot cd also has a linux option, and it doenst work either
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:14:43
il try to get a shell on another computer using this usb
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:14:46
pentium4_ubuntu: how do you know that you don't have a hardware problem? Is therre any OS that works?
OerHeks 2017-03-03 10:14:51
vga=791 is your fix with that SiS board
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:15:10
alkisg: it might be a hardware problem...how could I debug where it is?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:15:36
apart from that, the "same" problem happens on other equal computers
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:15:43
(same motherboards)
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:16:17
would it be ok to boot an initramfs?
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:16:51
pentium4_ubuntu: there might be a #hardware channel to help you with that, I haven't checked
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:17:01
alkisg: lol
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:17:02
This is for ubuntu questions only...

markot: " ASMedia ASM1051 (USB 3.0, UASP capable but due to problems blacklisted in mainline kernel) " http://linux-sunxi.org/USB/UAS
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:19:05
(11:16:17 μμ) pentium4_ubuntu: would it be ok to boot an initramfs? ==> that's what break=top does, and you said that it doesn't reach that far
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:19:22
That's even before udev initialization, way before loading graphics drivers etc
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:19:24
alkisg: kernel panic
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:19:44
Yes, that's why it's not related to sis or possibly even to ubuntu at that point...
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:19:50
...the weird thing is that it seems this happens to more than 1 computer
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:20:09
Test your usb stick on another computer
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:20:20
on my way. brb
genii 2017-03-03 10:22:51
markot: So you might consider putting uas on the blacklisted drivers in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and letting it fall back to whatever else it can use from usb-storage driver
markot 2017-03-03 10:23:35
genii: Yeah. Will try that next. Thank you for your help. I need to go to sleep now.
markot 2017-03-03 10:23:44
genii: Have a nice evening.
genii 2017-03-03 10:24:59

pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:27:48
alkisg: another computer, works perfectly
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:28:39
pentium4_ubuntu: sounds like a hardware problem then
plasticfish 2017-03-03 10:28:48
tubal, you have evince which is open source
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:29:12
alkisg: i know program obsolescence...but in many computers?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:29:17
at the same time?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:29:23
weird...
tubal 2017-03-03 10:29:33
plasticfish, I've been using evince. But it just hung up X on me, and I have no patience for that.
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:29:49
pentium4_ubuntu: I'm not sure what you meannnn. Are you saying that the usb stick works in some computers, and fails with the same message in many other computers?
dx486 2017-03-03 10:30:06
tubal, https://alternativeto.net/software/evince/?platform=linux
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:30:19
alkisg: no. the usb work on a DELL computer
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:30:42
but, around 10 computers with this motherboard aren't able to install
tubal 2017-03-03 10:30:50
dx486, thanks.
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:31:01
i picked up 1 to test it by my own
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:31:34
(the other guy knows how to install, but was having problems and ask for help)
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:31:47
pentium4_ubuntu: I would test [1] with a live cd, not usb, and [2] with a really old ubuntu version like 10.04
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:32:07
alkisg: screw 10.04, better to buy a PI
tubal 2017-03-03 10:32:12
plasticfish, I also found that evince would open taking up the whole usable viewport space. No maximized, just taking all of it. and there was no way to get a handle to resize the window.
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:32:24
pentium4_ubuntu: that would be just for troubleshooting
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:32:33
tried ramfs bundled with hirens and neither work
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:32:55
We have more than 10.000 pentium 4's in greece working fine with ubuntu 12.04
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:33:02
And more than 1000 have sis cards
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:33:28
But your problem is not the graphics card nor the processor
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:34:02
asrock quality motherboard then?
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:40:03
alkisg: ill try to boot on those computers, but they probably have the same issue. If none of them work, ill dump them and buy newer ones or pi's
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:40:26
thanks a lot for your time and affort
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:40:35
*effort
pentium4_ubuntu 2017-03-03 10:40:45
have a nice weekend!
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:40:57
You too.
alkisg 2017-03-03 10:41:15
I would start by trying a really old ubuntu version
