I'm trying to install Iridium browser but there's no support in the app downloader. From their website (https://iridiumbrowser.de/downloads/linux.html), is it just copy-paste line by line into terminal and it will add it to the repositories and keep Iridium auto-updated?
nacc 2017-02-22 06:46:11
JJ_298034: yes, but not officially supported, of course
JJ_298034 2017-02-22 06:46:44
nacc: Great stuff, thanks!
OerHeks 2017-02-22 06:46:49
JJ_298034, yes, the "wget -qO - https:// ....pub | sudo apt-key add will add the key to make safe updates possible
JJ_298034 2017-02-22 06:47:55
OerHeks: Ah, I see. I've added repos before but there were a lot of unknown commands so wanted some of you gurus to check there weren't any funky business. Oh, and if it was separate lines/commands. ^^
JJ_298034 2017-02-22 06:48:26
New on Ubuntu after a year on Mint. I'm one of those who fell instantly in love with Unity.
OerHeks 2017-02-22 06:50:26
JJ_298034, just be carefu‎ll with 3rd party repos.
Surendil 2017-02-22 06:51:24
hi everyone, I know this is not the right place, but.... anyone know how to run qemu vm? I've installed qemu, read howto but I'm not able to find qemu binary, http://paste.debian.net/916244/ these are my installed packages
JJ_298034 2017-02-22 06:51:52
OerHeks: Good tip. I try to verify repos and doublecheck the legitimacy of PPA's. :)
nacc 2017-02-22 06:52:12
Surendil: you probably would run the kvm binary, fwiw, rather than qemu
nacc 2017-02-22 06:52:25
Surendil: it's just a wrapper, admittedly
nacc 2017-02-22 06:52:43
Surendil: but qemu is invoked genearlly via qemu-system-
nacc 2017-02-22 06:53:04
Surendil: given that you are on debian, though, if that doesn't work, consult their IRC
Surendil 2017-02-22 06:54:10
nacc: thanks, I'll check kvm.
Surendil 2017-02-22 06:54:35
nacc: does kvm support ARM os?
nacc 2017-02-22 06:57:09
Surendil: kvm doesn't support an OS, I'm not sure what you mean
nacc 2017-02-22 06:57:32
Surendil: kvm is a kernel-level technology, for accelerating virtualization. The binary is just a wrapper around qemu using a specific flag, iirc

I dislike how notifications in unity aren't fast enough
brunch875 2017-02-22 07:00:12
on the other hand I love how unity behaves, and so I jumped back to it from gnome3
brunch875 2017-02-22 07:00:19
has anyone found a solution for this?
OerHeks 2017-02-22 07:03:05
brunch875, not in unity tweak, but there is a ppa with notify tools http://www.webupd8.org/2016/05/customize-notifyosd-notification.html
brunch875 2017-02-22 07:07:02
OerHeks, thanks for the link
brunch875 2017-02-22 07:07:33
I'm still not entirely satisfied with how to get them to behave though :/
brunch875 2017-02-22 07:07:48
best notification system is on ubuntu-touch from my point of view
brunch875 2017-02-22 07:07:51
we should get more of these
OerHeks 2017-02-22 07:08:18
the api is open, so be creative :-)
oquidave_ 2017-02-22 07:21:14
Hello, am having some e errant program that's causing a lot of outbound traffic from my box. I no idea what is it. I've used tcpdump to identify the offending ip but I don't know which program is compromized. Here's my tcpdump output https://dpaste.de/S05e
erle- 2017-02-22 07:25:48
where can I see my /actual/ cpu frequency?
nacc 2017-02-22 07:26:46
erle-: what do you mean by '/actual/' ?
erle- 2017-02-22 07:27:38
nacc, it always shows 800 mhz (i7 with up to 3500)
erle- 2017-02-22 07:27:54
e.g. /proc/cpuinfo
nacc 2017-02-22 07:27:59
erle-: that's the /actual/ cpu frequency your processor is running at
james1138 2017-02-22 07:28:00
My question is more of a "tweak". Would anyone know how to get (or trick) Banshee into auto-update metadata from LastFM when I rescan music folder for new files?
nacc 2017-02-22 07:28:13
erle-: via a powersaving stepping, etc
erle- 2017-02-22 07:28:19
nacc, but it never changes, even when I launch openssl speed
erle- 2017-02-22 07:28:42
nacc, did this change with Ubuntu 16.10
erle- 2017-02-22 07:28:56
?
erle- 2017-02-22 07:29:27
cpufreq does not seem to work any longer
nacc 2017-02-22 07:29:31
erle-: not that I know of, and it changes normally here
erle- 2017-02-22 07:29:49
nacc, I mean did they introduce a new kernel module for this?
nacc 2017-02-22 07:31:30
erle-: cpufreq is rather old, iirc, I think it's all done via cstates in the kernel
nacc 2017-02-22 07:31:35
erle-: well, presuming intel
nacc 2017-02-22 07:31:57
erle-: i don't know, though, it's presumably dependent upon your cpu type, etc
erle- 2017-02-22 07:32:21
i7, as I wrote, nacc
nacc 2017-02-22 07:32:52
erle-: not all i7 are the same, aiui, but regardless, I have an i7 as well and no issue here
nacc 2017-02-22 07:33:04
erle-: i'm on 17.04 now, but was on 16.10 until this past weekend w/o problem
erle- 2017-02-22 07:34:43
nacc, I upgraded several times from 14.10
erle- 2017-02-22 07:34:53
maybe some change was lost
user31241 2017-02-22 07:36:46
test
user31241 2017-02-22 07:36:51
ah nice.
user31241 2017-02-22 07:37:41
Is there a "software sources" application for Ubuntu or independent, that is similar to one in Linux Mint? Thank you
basil1x 2017-02-22 07:38:14
Why does 16.04 think my 1440p monitor is a 'built-in display' and only giving me 1024x768 as a display option?
OerHeks 2017-02-22 07:38:22
user31241, yes, type sources in dash ..
user31241 2017-02-22 07:38:50
OerHeks: but not this one. This one is very primitive.. :)
user31241 2017-02-22 07:39:03
OerHeks: :(* wrong smiley, sorry
OerHeks 2017-02-22 07:39:06
user31241, on what ubuntu version ?
user31241 2017-02-22 07:39:17
OerHeks: On latest LTS
k1l 2017-02-22 07:39:24
user31241: there is no 3rd party repo menu.
OerHeks 2017-02-22 07:39:45
just use the sources tab in updates.
k1l 2017-02-22 07:39:47
user31241: because other than mint, the main target on ubuntu is not to use 3rd party repos all over.
k1l 2017-02-22 07:40:09
basil1x: adapters involved?
basil1x 2017-02-22 07:40:36
GTX 1060 6GB through Display Port
user31241 2017-02-22 07:41:09
k1l: But I want more software and don't want back to gentoo..
k1l 2017-02-22 07:41:31
user31241: what more software do you need? is it not available in the ubuntu repos?
OerHeks 2017-02-22 07:41:52
!ppa

I had this issue on an rx480 through DVI on another computer, but this one with the nvidia was working fine until literally an hour ago.
