B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:47:53
JFox762: your not getting picture during install or after install either? Do you see a grub menu or splash at all or just no signal front monitor?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:48:19
just after booting to the boot drive
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:48:29
like after hitting enter on "install ubuntu
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:48:37
i might see a purple screen with some icons for a brief second
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:48:42
and then the screen goes blank
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:48:44
and shuts off
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:48:50
this is a live cd?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:48:53
but i was able to get around it
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:01
by removing my gfx card
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:05
temporarily
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:49:20
what cable are you using for the monitor and are you using an adaptor/converter for the cable?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:21
according to the link... after i install. ubuntu
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:26
hdmi
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:30
or not hdmi
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:31
dvi
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:42
I *WISH* I had HDMI
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:49:47
dvi and you using strictly dvi cable to monitor or using a converter?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:47
well the card supports it
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:49:56
i just dont have the cables to attach to my PC and TV
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:50:04
well it works now
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:50:09
with my GFX card out
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:50:15
and the monitor plugged directly to the motherboard
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:50:29
when you using your graphics card you get nothing
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:50:40
yes
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:50:50
so im installing ubuntu without my gfx card installed
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:51:01
according to the thing...
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:51:02
and I am assuming your booting your computer with the cable on the video card not internal, did you try changing the order on the video card post in the bios?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:51:18
uhhh no i didnt try that
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:51:19
but
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:51:26
i dont think it gives me the option
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:51:51
there almost always is an options for AGP/IGP and then you make asure its not IGP/AGP
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:51:57
or sorry
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:51:57
ok
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:52:03
IGP/PCIE
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:52:06
soooo... Im at this instlal screen
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:52:09
or whatever
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:52:13
when does it ask me which hard drive to install on?
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:52:14
something like that
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:52:18
I have windows on my primary hard drive
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:52:21
that I dont want to mess up
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:52:51
if you don't have a PCIE graphics card installed your onboard will work but once you install the card then you should be prioritizing the addon card
smahan83 2017-03-03 21:52:58
JFox762, you need to install the loader on your *second* disk
smahan83 2017-03-03 21:53:13
and use a bios boot menu to select it later
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:53:13
this config in your bios won't effect your windows configuration whatsoever
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:54:20
did you try booting with the graphics card installed and leaving it connected the onboard
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:55:00
ok
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:55:06
So... hmmm
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:55:25
under "Device for boot loader installation"
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:55:44
i should click "ATA ST320318AS (250gb)?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:56:00
my other drive is a western digital, which contains my windows
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:56:02
os
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:56:19
are you wanting dual boot of you want to pick the drive from boot bios menu?
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:56:35
ummm
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:56:43
you want to leave the windows intact then choose the LINUX DRIVE
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:56:55
the 250gb drive?
k1l_ 2017-03-03 21:57:05
the grub needs to be isntalled on the MBR from the disk that boots first. so you get asked what os you want to boot
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:57:10
it won't effect the windows but you will have to boot from bios or make the linux priorty and use the grub to boot windows that way
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:58:16
I usually leave my windows drive intact and then install linux on a second drive with grub and have os probe the second hdd for windows option
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:58:29
Ok so...
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:58:32
and change the hdd order in bios
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:58:43
whichever you want
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:58:45
it says...
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:58:54
well
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:58:58
i want it to default to windows
alkisg 2017-03-03 21:58:58
+1 B105PH3RE, that also allows for removing the second disk and boot windows without having to remove grub
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:59:03
unless I hit the F11 key
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:59:09
for my bios options
k1l_ 2017-03-03 21:59:15
JFox762: you can set Grub to default to windows.
JFox762 2017-03-03 21:59:21
OK
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:59:26
thats an option also
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 21:59:45
can even have 0 delay and then just use shift on boot to goto linux
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:00:05
So.....just install both, the bootlogger and linux system onto the 250gb drive
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:00:08
and that will leavre windows intact
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:00:16
roger that
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:00:24
250gb is the linux drive of course right?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:00:27
yes
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:00:32
my windows 10 is 1tb
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:00:34
WD
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:00:43
my new linux drive is the 250gb one
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:00:50
ok so choose that one
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:01:15
when i click "install now" it comes up with a dialogue box.... saying
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:01:25
No root file system is defined. Pleas correct this from the partitioning menu
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:01:38
are you using the whole drive?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:01:48
the whole 250gb drive
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:01:49
yes
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:02:01
whats the version you installing 16.04 15.04?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:02:10
there is a /dev/sda1 at 134mb
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:02:22
and free space 248865mb
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:02:33
249865*
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:02:35
so you have a small partition on the drive
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:02:47
remove it?
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:02:54
if you don't want it
smahan83 2017-03-03 22:03:12
i wonder why his "second" drive is sda
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:03:24
its got a partiion on it
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:03:27
possibly has something to do with which sata?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:03:31
well to be fair
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:03:39
my other drive also... has like ...
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:03:52
3 partitions i think?
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:03:55
was this a windows drive at any point or from a laptop cuz sometimes its the restoration parition
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:04:01
I think one is for the recovery
k1l_ 2017-03-03 22:04:05
show a "sudo parted -l" in a pastebin and link it here
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:04:21
the new drive?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:04:29
the new drive is fresh from the factory
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:04:35
or at least it should be
reppson_ 2017-03-03 22:04:35
good morning from sweden
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:04:41
hmm
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:04:45
weird
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:04:56
I would investigate whats on that partition first buts that me
smahan83 2017-03-03 22:05:00
JFox762, you can press ctrl+space to open a terminal window
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:05:12
hmmm
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:05:14
ok so
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:05:22
i removed the one partition on my 250gb drive
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:05:29
and i double clicked on Free space
reppson_ 2017-03-03 22:05:31
first time on Linux works fine so far
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:05:49
should i create a partition?
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:05:52
my linux always works
k1l_ 2017-03-03 22:06:17
smahan83: the shortcut on ubuntu for terminal is ctrl+alt+t
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:06:22
because when i tried to install into free space
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:06:27
it says no root file system is defined
alkisg 2017-03-03 22:06:31
(11:05:00 πμ) smahan83: JFox762, you can press ctrl+space to open a terminal window ==> does that work in ubiquity even if there's no session? (i.e. user selected "install ubuntu" not "try ubuntu")?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:06:32
please correct this from the partitioning menu
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:06:43
you have to create the root parition first
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:03
ok
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:07:04
but there should have been an option at the beginnined to install alongside or use entire disk or something
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:16
there perhaps
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:17
was
reppson_ 2017-03-03 22:07:19
but not wine works.a problem must solve
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:21
but i clicked "Do something else"
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:33
because I wanted to make sure that Ubuntu would install only on my 250gb drivre
alkisg 2017-03-03 22:07:39
JFox762: when you installed windows, did you also have that 250 gb disk connected? I might be possible that the partition you deleted was the windows boot partition
alkisg 2017-03-03 22:07:44
*it
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:45
no
alkisg 2017-03-03 22:07:48
OK
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:07:50
not when i installed windows
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:08:14
I bought the drive after i decided i wanted to try ubuntu on my main pc
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:08:30
but at the top should show you which drive your going to install it to
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:08:31
Im on my laptop, which is running Gallium OS (linux distro for Chroembooks)
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:08:35
just fyi
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:08:58

B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:10:13
JFox762: once I tried linux on my main system I never removed it just upgraded it... haven't looked back since its been 5 years now
k1l_ 2017-03-03 22:10:57
JFox762: its fine to have a dualboot. and its fine to use 2 different disks for that. i dont see why you are making it so complicated :)
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:11:00
mystified1234: is this happening while on battery or plugged in or both?
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:11:12
both
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:11:37
does this happen on a tty also without running X?
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:11:48
yes
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:12:26

mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:12:28

B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:12:42
can you ssh in while its messed up?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:12:45

mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:12:51
it's ok for a few minutes then reboots
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:12:52
or can i just use my thumdrive like ive been using?
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:13:08
either way doesn't matter JFox762
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:13:31
so the system's rebooted itself mystified1234?
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:13:37

B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:13:57

B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:14:11
did you swap out your RAM?
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:14:14
dmesg starts
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:14:33
but I can only see the end of the file
B105PH3RE 2017-03-03 22:14:35

JFox762 2017-03-03 22:15:30
or do i have to use the "Something else" option":
smahan83 2017-03-03 22:16:27
JFox762, select "something else" and create a partition in the free space: ext4, mount point /
mystified1234 2017-03-03 22:17:18
rebooting
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:18:36

JFox762 2017-03-03 22:18:56
does Grub need to have its own separate partition from the OS?
JFox762 2017-03-03 22:19:05

smahan83 2017-03-03 22:19:09
