ppf 2017-01-26 10:45:13
did you do anything in /etc/network/interfaces.d/?
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:45:32
Nope its empty there as far as i know
ppf 2017-01-26 10:46:32
and /etc/network/interfaces as well?
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:46:58
It has auto lo
ppf 2017-01-26 10:47:03
okay
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:47:09
And iface lo inet loopback
ppf 2017-01-26 10:47:18
then use ifconfig to configure the interface
ppf 2017-01-26 10:48:10
and also check journalctl -u NetworkManager
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:49:28
There is a red line on the journalctl
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:50:11
Nm_device_get_device_type: assertion nm_if_device (self) failed
ppf 2017-01-26 10:52:02
configure the interface manually
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:53:18
Sorry , how do i edit this read only as i cant change its permissions
ppf 2017-01-26 10:53:36
edit what?
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:53:43
Interfaces file
ppf 2017-01-26 10:53:43
use ifconfig
noimnotninevolt 2017-01-26 10:54:03
ifconfig doesn't persist changes across boots.
ppf 2017-01-26 10:54:04
well, or change the interfaces file, yes
ppf 2017-01-26 10:54:26
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:54:38
Oh alright cheers let me try to edit
fedecupe 2017-01-26 10:55:10
good evening, I'm looking for help in installing a displaylink driver with newer evdi module. Anyone cares to help?
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:58:43
Still not working .. jesus and this thijg is only for the internet
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:58:51
Thing
ppf 2017-01-26 10:58:58
what did you put in the interfaces file now?
Bashing-om 2017-01-26 10:59:04
fedecupe: Sorry, but I do not recognize the term " displaylink driver " or " evdi module " . details ?
Americanu 2017-01-26 10:59:57
Ppf so on the ifconfig i have 2 "things" lo and enp3s0, i replaced lo with enp3s0 in interfaces
fedecupe 2017-01-26 11:00:36
Bashing-om displaylink is a "thing" to make multiple monitors work over usb (in my case is a dock), evdi is a module for that ( here my askubuntu http://askubuntu.com/questions/874558/cant-install-displaylink-driver-with-current-kernel)
ppf 2017-01-26 11:00:42
Americanu: that's not gonna work
ppf 2017-01-26 11:00:44
man interfaces
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:01:15
Im not that much of a ubuntu savy, what is man and how do i do it ?
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:01:43
Americanu, you need to add 2 lines to the file, that's all
ppf 2017-01-26 11:01:53
you type it into your terminal
ppf 2017-01-26 11:02:04
it's a documentation viewer
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:02:21
Well i am inside interfaces
OerHeks 2017-01-26 11:02:30
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkConfigurationCommandLine/Automatic
ppf 2017-01-26 11:02:40
yes, open the manpage to read how the interface file works
Bashing-om 2017-01-26 11:02:49
fedecupe: K; sorry out of my experience range . Mostly answered such that you know we are aware of your need . I expect others here to now pick up my slack .
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:02:51
Americanu, "auto enp3s0" and "iface enp3s0 inet dhcp" should do the trick
OerHeks 2017-01-26 11:02:52
might be a help, but i wonder what w10 does with your network interfave
fedecupe 2017-01-26 11:03:14
Bashing-om thanks anyway :)
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:03:26
Well tbh i dont thnk it can do anything as i have grub
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:04:54
heathenwolfe: those lies stll dont do snything to my internet...
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:05:13
Lines*
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:05:19
Americanu, still need to restart the network service after that
ppf 2017-01-26 11:05:22
yes, that just tells your system what to do with the interfaces
ppf 2017-01-26 11:05:34
systemctl restart networking
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:05:59
Americanu, easiest is rebooting your pc into Ubuntu again
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:06:26
Jesus finally
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:06:36
Internet connection
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:06:42
Thanks guys
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:06:47
Americanu, congratulations
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:06:58
Thanks all of ya lol
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:07:57
ppf, thanks for the "systemctl restart networking", didn't knew that one
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:09:53
Gonna sort the ubuntu downlosds now lol
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:12:23
Wow :/ aparently its just the icon showing that it has connection. Its not connecting to anything
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:14:03
So no internet connection at al aparently.. jesus whats wrong with this
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:15:05
heathenwolfe: for some aparent reason now i have on ifconfig enp3s0:avahi
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:15:19
Along lo and enp3s0
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:16:51
Americanu, sounds like mdns
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:17:17
Whats that?
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:18:27
Americanu, it's nothing to worry about, just automatic hostname resolution
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:19:23
heathenwolfe: but i cant connect to the internet still... It changed the top icon tho
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:19:35
Americanu, if you have e.g. two computers (pc1, pc2) on the network, you can communicate for example ping pc2.local from pc1 without using ip addresses
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:19:51
Americanu, is your networkmanager still active?
zuiss1 2017-01-26 11:19:58
is it true that installing ubuntu with encryption on a SSD will lead to poor performance compared to unencrypted? https://askubuntu.com/questions/53872/how-do-i-set-up-full-disk-encryption-on-an-ssd
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:20:25
Heathenwolfe It shows up top still in , so i guess yeah
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:20:58
heathenwolfe: clicking on connection information it says no valid connection found
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:21:46
Americanu, I guess it doesn't show the active enp3s0 connection via networkmanager because you bypassed it via the /etc/network/interfaces
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:22:38
What can i do tho ? I mean i still dont have connectin
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:22:55
Americanu, /etc/network/interfaces is typically for static or servers
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:23:05
Americanu, try listing "nmcli con show" in the terminal
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:23:27
Americanu, you should see a connection for enp3s0 as well
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:24:17
Americanu, then just "nmcli con up NAME" where NAME is the connection name which owns the enp3s0 if it already exists
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:24:24
heathenwolfe: right so under device theres -- , the uuid is showing and it shows ethernet connection 1
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:25:32
Americanu, if it's showing up in green text then it's enabled, if not
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:25:47
Americanu, then enable it via $ nmcli con up "ethernet connection 1"
highIQ 2017-01-26 11:25:54
6,000,000 LIES!!! THE GREATEST HOAX IN HISTORY https://youtu.be/TAtVKLATABM
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:25:58
heathenwolfe: nope it shows in white... :(
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:26:24
Americanu, just needs enabling then or maybe terminal colors are disabled, no biggie
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:26:45
heathenwolfe: "no suitable device found for this device""
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:26:57
This connection*
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:27:20
Should i delete this ethernet connection and recreste it ?
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:27:26
Recreate
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:27:52
Americanu, it's also possible via the normal network menu in ubuntu, this is just quick way to check stuff behind the scenes
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:30:14
heathenwolfe: unfortunately it didnt do anything different.. uhm would it be because i crested myself that ethernet connection after the instalation of ubuntu
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:30:20
Created*
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:30:53
Is there a way to automatically create a wired con?
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:32:39
Americanu, it should have been created during installation...
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:33:29
heathenwolfe: this is the only thing that was created
Zythyr 2017-01-26 11:34:24
Need help. In my Ubuntu in terminal I typed "startx". Now everytime I reboot and try to login, it takes me back ot the login screen again. I can't login to the Desktop
Ben64 2017-01-26 11:35:29
Zythyr: you shouldn't use startx
k1l 2017-01-26 11:35:36
Zythyr: go to tty1 (ctrl+alt+f1) then login, then look with "ls -al" what belongs to root-root and not your user. if its the .Xauthority file chown them back to your user:user
k1l 2017-01-26 11:35:48
Zythyr: after that go back with ctrl+alt+f7 and login
k1l 2017-01-26 11:36:06
Zythyr: and for the future: dont run startx,
Zythyr 2017-01-26 11:36:28
k1l Okay let me try that
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:37:36
Americanu, okay, when you right click the connections there should be one connection e.g. "wired connection 1"
Mister 2017-01-26 11:37:56
Hello?
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:38:10
Americanu, double check if there's a checkmark next to "enable networking"
Mister 2017-01-26 11:38:26
Excuse me, I was wondering if I could get a touch of help.
Zythyr 2017-01-26 11:38:45
k1l Thank you very much!
Zythyr 2017-01-26 11:38:48
That fixed the problem
heathenwolfe 2017-01-26 11:38:57
Americanu, and "edit connections...", select the connection, edit, go to ipv4 tab and see if it's configured as automatic dhcp
Mister 2017-01-26 11:39:48
I think I've gotten in over my head buying a computer with Linux installed.
Mister 2017-01-26 11:40:02
Because I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
Ben64 2017-01-26 11:40:21
Mister: explain the issue
Mister 2017-01-26 11:41:10
Well, I've tried running steam on an old Lenovo I bought for a great price
Mister 2017-01-26 11:41:40
And I've been advised to switch from a 32 bit system to a 62 bit?
Mister 2017-01-26 11:42:03
Wrapping my head around doing that has proven impossible.
k1l 2017-01-26 11:42:04
Mister: dont run 32bit OS if your cpu is 64bit
k1l 2017-01-26 11:42:24
Mister: that means reinstall to change it to 64bit
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:42:32
Yes it is
Mister 2017-01-26 11:42:37
How would I go about doing that?
Americanu 2017-01-26 11:42:46
heathenwolfe: it is as automatic dhcp
Mister 2017-01-26 11:42:49
I don't know the first thing about Linux.
k1l 2017-01-26 11:43:44
Mister: do what? reinstall?
Mister 2017-01-26 11:43:56
Yes.
Mister 2017-01-26 11:44:09
I just bought the laptop today, I didn't come with a disk or anything.
k1l 2017-01-26 11:44:21
what laptop is it?
Mister 2017-01-26 11:44:28
It's an old lenevo, probably about ten years old.
Mister 2017-01-26 11:44:34
Maybe less. Maybe more like 6
Mister 2017-01-26 11:44:35
7
Mister 2017-01-26 11:44:43
A think pad?
k1l 2017-01-26 11:44:52
"i have a green car, its 7 years old" :)
